New Meadowlands Stadium Meadowlands

36 years ago, Wellington Mara ended his franchise's nomadic trek across the Tri-State area and settled them in a new stadium in the swamp alongside I-95 in East Rutherford, NJ. New Yorkers were pissed. Fans from Connecticut, who had faithfully filled Yankee Stadium and the Polo Grounds for decades, weren't happy either. New Jersey fans were pleased, but even they had their druthers.

Now, no one is happy. The Giants, along with the Jets, replaced the utilitarian Giants Stadium with MetLife Stadium, a $1.6 million food court and mall with a football field in the middle of it. The fan experience is a wonderful one. Everyone raves about it. Just one problem, though.....it's still in the swamp.

Travel to and from the game is lengthier than ever, even with the addition of a NJ Transit rail spur that shuttles fans in and out of places like Secaucus and Hoboken. The parking is also still a horror. Mike Philbrick, of the esteemed sports blog Grantland.com summed it all up this week after he attended the Giants-Cowboys game the other night:

As I listen to the ringing of the bell in the intro of AC/DC?s Hells Bells, I always get goose bumps as it always reminds me of what Giant Stadium/MetLife Stadium is about: noise, passion and energy.

However, with the Giants moving into a newly constructed stadium, that mojo was lost as the Giants have been too passive and underwhelming and lost far too many games at home in the stadium?s two-year existence. Many of those losses have come via the head-scratching variety.

Yesterday, the Giants made four roster moves (not five, as many had reported): ?WR Duke Calhoun was waived/injured; DT Marvin Austin was placed on IR and WR Ramses Barden and OL Adam Koets were moved from inactive PUP to reserve/PUP.

The team was told by the NFL that because of the short turnaround time between the third and fourth preseason games, they would be given an exemption on the mandatory cuts that were due yesterday. They will be allowed to carry 85 players into tomorrow night's game vs New England instead of 80.

They came into the process with 89 players, not 90, and that is why you are seeing headlines across the net saying the Giants cut five players. No one bothered to count. They must get to 80 by Friday and then 53 by Saturday, meaning 32 of these guys will be sent packing after tomorrow's game.

The Giants will be back on the practice field today in preparation for their game with the Jets this Saturday. The talk at TIMEX these days is, of course, injuries.

Yesterday, two more joined the legion headed for season-ending IR: CB Brian Witherspoon, who tore an ACL on o punt return in Monday's game vs Chicago and DT Marvin Austin, who will miss the 2011 season with a torn pectoral muscle.

Head coach Tom Coughlin is obviously disappointed in the latest rash of injuries (add in Osi Umenyiora and Prince Amukamara and it just makes your stomach turn). He joked to reporters why no one wanted to talk about the blocked punt, then revealed the team's strategy to address the sudden dearth of experience at cornerback....

Insurance giant MetLife will officially take over today as the overarching sponsor of the stadium known as the New Meadowlands. For the next quarter-century, the stadium will be known as - what else - MetLife Stadium.

From Bloomberg.com:

The venue will be known as MetLife Stadium. The agreement also makes the company the official insurer of the Giants, Jets and the building, and provides the company with 120,000 square feet of promotional space. Its name will be displayed on four signs outside the stadium.

The Giants practiced inside the fieldhouse last night due to the rain.?Tom Coughlin was pleased to see his team in pads for the very first time this season.

"I?m glad to be out here in pads and I was glad to get the work. There were a couple of things that did disappoint me that we will teach and overcome with the young guys. It was good but you can see that some of the rust has to come off."

Kevin Gilbride has lots of weapons at his disposal, even if the team missed out on Plaxico Burress. They re-signed RB Ahmad Bradshaw, grabbed another TE in Ben Patrick and, if you look at their roster, have tons of talent and speed at the skill positions.

The Giants' offensive coordinator met the media at TIMEX yesterday to discuss the state of his offense (keep in mind this was before the Giants announced that Ahmad Bradshaw was returning):

Q: Is the installation, the things you do early in camp, is it any different because you didn?t have mini camps and OTAs this year?A: It?s different only in the sense that instead of this being the third time that you?ve gone through something ? once in your OTAs, the second time reviewing it in minicamp, this is the third time through ? now it?s the first time. For the older guys it?s more of a, ?Oh yeah, that?s right, I forgot.? Or you?re chipping off a little rust. For the new guys, it?s the first time you?ve ever heard it. Trying to reconcile the pace with new guys who have never heard any of this stuff before with the guys who, you know, you?re ready to work on the refinement and the nuances of some things can be a little bit challenging. What we?re trying to do, to the best of our ability, is go at the same installation pace that we normally do. What we?re getting a chance to do is review it twice ? once going in, practicing and then coming back and doing it in the morning. To date so far, I think we?re doing pretty well. As it continues to go on, we?ll see.

The Giants and the Jets both finished in the top ten of?Forbes'?latest "most valuable sports franchises" list.

Big Blue was rated eighth overall at $1.18 billion just ahead of the tenth-ranked Jets, who were valued at $1.14 billion. The Houston Texans were in between them at $1.17 billion. ?The list contained almost the entire NFC East, with the exception of (you guessed it) the Philadelphia Eagles.

SportsBusiness Journal is reporting that MetLife is close to a deal to buy the naming rights to the New Meadowlands Stadium. According to the report, the deal will be worth between $17 and $18 million a year.

MetLife is in advanced discussions with New Meadowlands Stadium to upgrade its corner sponsorship at the year-old facility to a full naming-rights deal. A source close to the deal described the negotiations as "very advanced, but not complete."

Other sources familiar with the matter emphasized that while a deal to name the home of the New York Jets and Giants, and the site of the 2014 Super Bowl, MetLife Stadium was not finalized, discussions have progressed enough that those inquiring about naming rights in the last month have been told that they were not available, though a cornerstone sponsorship could be. Several sources said MetLife is paying about $7 million a year for its cornerstone deal, and that the naming-rights package being considered would average between $17 million and $18 million a year.

The Giants are trying everything to make their fans feel like they are part of the team's inner circle. The Facebook page is a wild success - the Giants really nailed it - and fan sentiments also are prominently displayed on the Giants.com homepage in the form of Tweets and blogs.

Now, SNY Giants Insider Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger tells us of a new campaign by the Giants to buddy-up to their fans.....

At a time when many NFL fans feel alienated and ignored by a labor struggle between the owners and players, the Giants are trying to find ways to connect with their fan base.

This is another debut here at GFB....another submission from one of our journalism interns, Kel?Dansby...enjoy!?

As fans I know that we are disappointed to not see the Giants open up the season against the Jets on September 11th, but we must look past that to the rest of the schedule. The schedule in 2011 begins formidably for Big Blue, who are usually fast starters. In Weeks 1?6 we face only two teams that had winning records in 2010, and in those six games three opponents are from the NFC West. So the schedule sets up the Giants for another fast start in the season possibly jumping out to a 5-1 record, or better. With the hardest game being a week two matchup at Lincoln Financial Field against the Philadelphia Eagles; whom the Giants haven?t beaten since November 9th, 2008.

  • Nine days until the 2011 NFL Draft....things are starting to pick up. ?There's no football going on, but hopefully that will change soon....
  • The NFL will release the 2011 schedule tonight at 7:00pm ET on the NFL Network. ?It has been widely speculated that the Giants will play the Jets on the first Sunday night of the season on national television. The relevance? It is the 10th anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center that killed nearly 3,000 innocent American citizens.
  • The Giants will play the AFC East this season: the Bills and Dolphins at home and the Patriots on the road. ?The Jets will be the home team vs the Giants, but the Giants will be using all of their own facilities that game, so it is very much like a home game for the Blue.
  • Also on the 2011 docket are trips to New Orleans, San Francisco and Arizona and home games vs St. Louis, Seattle and Green Bay. ?These, of course, are in addition to the home-and-away affairs vs division rivals Dallas, Philadelphia and Washington.
  • This year's NFL game in London will take place on October 23rd and will feature the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Chicago Bears.
  • Alfred F. Kelly, Jr., the former president of American Express has been named the CEO of the 2014 Super Bowl organizing committee. ?Kelly will spearhead the effort to make the New York-area outdoor Super Bowl a memorable event - for the right reasons..
  • According to USA Today, former Giants great Michael Strahan is in the mix to replace Regis Philbin on the long-running Live With Regis and Kelly morning program when Philbin steps down later this year.

The Giants revealed their 2011 Preseason schedule today. Well, most of it....

Week One (Aug 11-15) has the Giants traveling down to Charlotte to face the Panthers, who sport a new coach and the #1 draft pick in this year's draft.

In Week Two (Aug 22) the Chicago Bears come to NMS in a nationally-televised Monday night affair.

Since the Giants' season ended last month, I've read and heard countless solutions to the Giants problems and what they need to do to get back to the playoffs. ?I will address that in the coming weeks, but first we need to look at where they stand right now....

Not making the playoffs in a season where a team with a losing record qualified is disappointing. It is no solace finishing 10-6, either. It actually can work against you. What it tells you is that you blew opportunities. As we know, that is the story of the 2010 Giants.

The Jets' recent success has taken a bite into the Giants' hold over the NY football populace, but they are still a ways away from reaching the core.

The fence-sitters have jumped over to the Jets side for the time being which has drawn the two teams closer in popularity, but the Giants still have the upper hand.

The proof is in the ticket-sales pudding. The Giants attached PSLs to every seat they sold. The Jets only required PSL agreements of their high-end and lower level ticket holders.

The roof at the Mall of America Field (aka The Metrodome) is reportedly damaged to the point where no game can be played there until: the snow has been removed,? the building has been assessed and the roof can be re-inflated.

That does not appear to be a reasonable request if the game is to be played tomorrow night. The league is reportedly seeking alternative sites.

The University of Minnesota has a new 50,000 seat outdoor stadium. But it's outdoors - which means its covered with snow and needs to be cleared for play itself. The Giants also reportedly did not pack their outdoor gear....

Remember the old saying, " Protect your own".?? I sure do.? Maybe people have forgotten over the years what it means.?? Remember the days when players where represented by...former players?? What amazing idea!

Now that the NFLPA is represented by...a lawyer, a wizard of words and ligation you can now settle into the fact there maybe no football on the horizon. ? With the recent, and may I add laughable statement made from NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith I can only wonder if there was another choice to head up this once strong union.

Smith looks pretty transparent when he puffs out his chest and screams "our internal deadline" has come and gone all the while claiming headlines across the country.

The stadium was blanketed in complete darkness, leaving the LED screens of cellphones and Blackberrys as the only light source.

Here are some quotes from the past week from both the Giants and the Cowboys' camps.....

"I can tell you firsthand that he's got some qualities of organization. He's got some qualities of leadership. He's very smart. All of those things are not necessarily different - they're manifested differently in Jason - but I've certainly known him now for many years and know that he's got some qualities that can get us where we want to go." - Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on new head coach Jason Garrett.

"So Jason is being asked to change a culture in five days with a team that knows they are out of the playoffs at 1-7. To me, it's unfair to evaluate anyone in that role. The head coach needs to be able to implement a training schedule, conditioning programs and set the general tone, and that can't be done in the middle of the season. There's always a chance he does it, but this is a monumental effort, and I don't think it's fair to evaluate him as a head coach based off of it. I think he's a great head coaching prospect." - former Cowboys QB Troy Aikman, who was a teammate of Garrett's and will be providing color of today's game on FOX.

It was reminiscent of many trips back from the Meadowlands I remembered as a Teenager in the late 1970?s when my father was still with us. Back then we would wait for the busses outside of Gate D. Now we stand, however painfully, and wait for the train. We had all just watched the Titans throttle the Giants, if only on the scoreboard. I wanted to get some fan reaction. Two ladies behind me were in their jerseys and had polish under their eyes. It, and their make-up, was already running.
