Injuries are not an excuse for losing, but they certainly are a reason. The Giants have been slammed with injuries the past several seasons, especially the last two, and have not played in a postseason game since Super Bowl XLVI.

In 2014, the Giants placed over two dozen players on injured reserve including captains Victor Cruz and Jon Beason, star CB Prince Amukamara and prized UFA signees Geoff Schwartz, Walter Thurmond and Robert Ayers.

For the second consecutive season, the New York Football Giants led the NFL in a category that make most coaches and GMs cringe: Football Outsiders' Adjusted Games Lost.

The latest exiling of five players to the season-ending injured reserve list has left the Giants short at several positions.

On offense, they will start their opening day lineup in Tennessee this Sunday: LT Will Beatty, LG Weston Richburg, C JD Walton, RG John Jerry and RT Justin Pugh. They finally have some numbers behind that group.

Eric Herman has been promoted from the practice squad, joining James Brewer, Brandon Mosely and Dallas Reynolds in the second unit. Not the greatest of options, but at least three of the four are healthy. Brewer is still being monitored for concussion-like symptoms. He is also the only spare tackle on the roster.

Like many of his Giants teammates, punter Steve Weatherford has had a rough year. He had his left ankle wrenched in the season opener in Detroit and he's been grinning and bearing it ever since.

After a slow start due to the injury, Weatherford has rebounded to raise his average to 45.2 YPA.

Yesterday, Weatherford finally caved. He sat out practice with a back ailment, which was apparently sustained over the past few days.

The Giants have a slew of nagging injuries as they prepare for their game vs the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday. Defensive captain LB Jon Beason (foot) is experiencing soreness in the foot that kept him out of most of the Giants' offseason program and unexpectedly sat out practice on Thursday.

"They think he?ll play," said head coach Tom Coughlin. "I think if he feels a little bit better out here on the grass, he?s fine."

Coughlin confirmed Beason's foot is 'sore' and agreed when it was suggested that playing on artificial turf could be compounding the issue.

The Giants' 35-24 win over the Jets at MetLife Stadium Friday night came at a price. Four more players were injured, most notably LG Geoff Scwhartz, who was carted off with a dislocated toe.

?It?s pretty serious,? Tom Coughlin said after the game. ?Hard to play with a toe that?s not functioning.?

Rookie Weston Richburg replaced Schwartz at LG. He may be there for awhile as Schwartz will likely be out for a few weeks. The starting line, which struggled to protect QB Eli Manning vs the Jets, will likely be: Will Beatty at LT, Justin Pugh at RT, Richburg at LG, Brandon Mosley at RG and JD Walton at center.

The Giants' 2013 season was one of insult and injury. They've gotten over the insults, given themselves a facelift and now are working their way back from the injuries. Yesterday, many of those players waxed optimistic about their health for the 2014 season.

"No doubt, no doubt. I?m going to go out there and play the game like I was 21 again. This whole offseason I?ve just been training and thinking that I want to get back on the football field. It?s coming." - DE Jason Pierre-Paul on if he'll be the player he was before back and shoulder ailments slowed him down.

"I?m 100 percent, ready to go. My knee feels great. I?m just excited to be back in this building, back smelling this grass again and being around you beautiful people so I?m excited." - WR Victor Cruz, recovering from knee surgery.

The Giants have five players on the Phyically Unable to Perform - or PUP - list this camp. We know JPP (back) is in the midst of rehab as are Henry Hynoski (knee) and Markus Kuhn (also a knee). Terrell Thomas (knee) was cleared by doctors, but the team felt it best to shelve him at this time.

"He?s restricted in what he can do. We?re all frustrated about it," Tom Coughlin said yesterday. "He is himself, number one. The sooner he can get out there, the better off we?ll all be. And he came in fully feeling like he could start right out in practice and just wasn?t able to do that right away. We?ll be patient, but know full well that we?re all excited the moment he gets a chance to come out and practice and we get a sense of where he is, how he?s going to be and that type of thing."

The one player that is not long for the list is guard Chris Snee, who told reporters he could begin practicing as early as next week:

Yesterday, the Giants cut down to 75 players, but the next round of cuts will tell us how concerned they are about the rash of injuries to their defense.

On the line, Chris Canty was placed on PUP so he's out until Week 7. Marvin Austin's back and the blood clot in Shaun Rogers' leg is still being monitored. Both could be headed to IR. Yesterday, their top four DEs (Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Jason Pierre-Paul and Adrian Tracy) missed practice with various ailments.

Michael Boley, arguably the team's best LB, has practiced sparingly this summer due to a severe hamstring strain. He is not expected to be ready for the season opener. Mathias Kiwanuka, who plays across the field from Boley, is dealing with a groin issue. He also sat out practice yesterday.
