The NFC East is in shambles these days. The Cowboys may be 2-0 but they will be without both QB Tony Romo (clavicle) and WR Dez Bryant until Thanksgiving at the soonest. The Giants came out on national television on Thursday night and put a sock in the mouths of all their detractors, outpacing the Washington Redskins from whistle to whistle. They refuse to be fodder for wisecracking talking heads and smarmy late night talk show hosts.

The Giants finally held on to a lead in the fourth quarter and actually won a football game. The collective feeling as the clock wound down was one of uneasiness. Although, they had more points than their opponent when the clock hit zero, it felt very much like it did the first two weeks. Except for one thing. They won.

"We won, so smile," head coach Tom Coughlin said after the Giants' 32-21 win over the Washington Redskins. "It wasn?t easy. Nobody said it was going to be."

For many reasons, the Giants and head coach Tom Coughlin do not want to sink to 0-3 to start the 2015 season. ?A slow start usually means no playoffs, and for the Giants, no playoffs for the fourth consecutive season will likely mean wholesale changes.

The Giants are need of a win and the Redskins have always been there to provide them with one. That is, until now. The two teams seem to be going in opposite directions. The Giants, at 0-2, have been unable to close out games, while the Redskins have pounded the opponents on both sides of the ball so far this season.

The Giants are cramming for their latest test, a game against the very physical Washington Redskins (1-1) on Thursday night. The Giants are 0-2 and probably should be at least 1-1, perhaps even 2-0, after squandering fourth-quarter leads in both game in historic fashion.

The Giants' 0-2 start has come with some interesting sidebars. They have actually played seven quarters of effective football and could have won both games. But fate would not have it. They let their guard down against two opponents that had the capacity to beat them, and so it goes.

The Giants were in better spirits today, knowing they aren't the only team in their division going through some rough times. A win vs Washington this coming Thursday will bring their record up to 1-2, tying them with the Redskins and pulling in front of the 0-2 Eagles. The 2-0 Cowboys are facing a trying season with QB Tony Romo (clavicle) and WR Dez Bryant (foot) each expected to miss more than two months.

Sunday was the latest test of wills for Giant fans as the Blue snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory once again. It's a disturbing trend that everyone hopes will reverse itself and quickly. Last week in Dallas, they had the Cowboys beat, and this week, they had the Falcons beat. What happened? Perhaps it can be summed up by the coach of the Atlanta Falcons, Dan Quinn:

The Giants have always been known for their conservative, all-business approach in running the day-to-day operations. They have essentially been the model NFL franchise. Even through all the off-field hiccups in the past, e.g. Plaxico Burress, the Giants' brass has taken the high road more often than not.

They're still talking about the Giants' curious choice to throw on third and goal on Sunday night in Dallas. The conventional thinking was they should have run the ball and either scored and iced the game or not scored, which would have taken an extra 40 seconds off the clock before kicking a FG.

Now this is a case of who said what, and why 13-year veteran QB Eli Manning a) didn't know how many time outs the Cowboys had left and b) why he decided to throw the ball out of bounds, stopping the clock.

The sting of Sunday night's loss to the Cowboys isn't going to go away anytime soon. The staples of Giants football are strong coaching, good quarterback?play and a relentless pass rush. They had none of that against?Dallas on Sunday, but should still have come away with a win.

The game came down to one play for the Giants' offense. With 1:43 remaining, the Giants had everything going in their favor: the score (23-20), the ball (third and goal on the Dallas 1) and the ability to run down the clock in the process of putting up more points because the Cowboys had just used their final timeout.
