New York Knicks Knicks

Taking a one-point lead into the second quarter against the league-leading Warriors, the Knicks arguably had one of their best opening?quarters of the entire season.

They kept up with Golden State, trading buckets and maintaining a certain tempo in the early goings. From there, the home team picked up the pace even more. The Knicks' defense was spread too thin, as Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson nearly single-handedly sunk New York. They each knocked down six daggers from deep a piece.

From there on out, things got back to normal for New York. Nevertheless, despite the loss, there were still some takeaways worth making note of, especially as the team continues to explore different players as potential fits for next season's roster. See below for more observations.

Knicks president Phil Jackson has been fined by the NBA for his comments regarding Ohio St. star D'Angelo Russell (AP, March 4).

Jackson was in attendance for the Ohio St-Nebraska game last Thursday night and told Cleveland.com that Russell was a "great looking kid" and a "great prospect."

NBA spokesman Tim Frank confirmed the fine Tuesday night but did not disclose the amount.

With the Knicks struggling under rookie head coach Derek Fisher, will Phil Jackson seek out recently fired Brian Shaw to join their?staff? (Berman, March 4)

Shaw was fired Tuesday night after serving as the head coach of the Denver Nuggets for less than two seasons. He led the Nuggets to a 36-46 record last season and 20-39 this year.

It was believed that Jackson preferred Shaw over Fisher in his pursuit for a head coach last off season. But Denver was unwilling to let Shaw walk at the time.

Derek Fisher might be running out of ways to stay positive as the Knicks fell to 12-47 on the season after being steamrolled by the Kings Tuesday night (Post, March 3).

?It was definitely not the level of character and integrity this group has been showing in recent weeks,?? Fisher said. ?That was the most disappointing part. It?s not necessarily losing the game but just the way as a group, we couldn?t find a way to compete.??

None of the Knicks starters hit double figures and they trailed the Kings by as many as 44 points late in the third period. Fisher said this energy was similar to what he saw from them in practice on Monday - which isn't exactly a good thing.

As Phil Jackson prepares to put his own stamp on the Knicks and build from the ground up this coming summer, he and the rest of the team's brass will use the rest of this season to evaluate and examine which?of New York's current players may be worth holding onto.

Of course, Carmelo Anthony, Tim Hardaway Jr., Pablo Prigioni, and Jose Calderon are among those currently under contract for next season. Langston Galloway is owed a partial guarantee. Other options include Lance Thomas and Travis Wear.

In Wear's case, the forward turned heads following Summer League and training camp, impressing just enough, not only to sneak onto the opening night roster, but also earn his full guaranteed salary after managing to stick around past January.

In the Warriors' defeat of the Knicks on Saturday night, the charge to victory was not entirely led by Stephen Curry. It wasn't led by fellow 2015 NBA All-Star Klay Thompson, either. Instead, it was none other than Draymond Green who stood as the staring attraction en route to victory.

Whereas Curry scored 22 points and hit a couple of daggers towards the end to put the Knicks away for good, Green proved to be the more efficient player throughout. Adding 20 points, he shot 8 of 12 from the field and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds. This went along with two blocks and three assists.

Such a versatile performance has been par for the course all season long for Green, who was widely considered to be an All-Star candidate if the Western Conference leading Warriors were awarded a third one, a la the Eastern Conference leading Atlanta Hawks. The forward is averaging 11.4 points (on 43% from the field and 34% from deep), 8.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.4 blocks through 49 contests. Needless to say, he's a true stat-sheet stuffer, and can hurt opposing teams in a number of different ways.

This afternoon, the Brooklyn Nets visit their intracity rivals when they head to Madison Square Garden for a Monday matinee with the New York Knicks at 2:30 pm. The two teams both enter today with losing records, but both teams have been playing much better basketball since the start of the new year.

The Nets head into today's action with a 16-22 record, second in the Atlantic division, eighth in the NBA's Eastern Conference. The Knicks are 15-25, third in the Atlantic, tied for 10th in the East for now. The two teams squared off at the Barclays Center back on December 5, with the Knicks blowing out the Nets by a score of 113-83.

In that game, the Knicks shot 57.1% from the field and an incredible 59.3% from three-point territory, going 16-of-27 from deep. The Nets had been struggling with their perimeter defense earlier this season, and no game exemplified their defensive struggles more than that game against the Knicks.?However, in the 19 games since that blowout loss to their crosstown rivals, the Nets have allowed a shooting percentage of just 44.5%, with a 35.8% three-point shooting percentage allowed.

The rest of the Eastern Conference is improving around the New York Knicks.

The Miami Heat are the defending champs, and well, LeBron James is still on the team. The Indiana Pacers proved they're a tough test for the Knicks in the playoffs. The Brooklyn Nets added Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to play alongside Deron Williams, and the Chicago Bulls will get a healthy Derrick Rose back this year.

So Carmelo Anthony, how will you respond?

Linsanity took the Garden by storm. It took New York by storm. It took the NBA by storm. In fact, Linsanity made waves throughout sports, as well as music, TV and pop culture.

It also sparked a bidding war between the New York Knicks and Houston Rockets, one in which the Rockets won by handing Jeremy Lin -- an unknown-turned-fan favorite point guard -- a three-year, $25.1 million deal to be a part of the revamped Rockets roster.

But for that amount of dough, Lin's 2012-13 season in which he averaged 13 points and 6 assists, did not live up to the expectations.

The Brooklyn Nets win at Madison Square Garden yesterday was significant due to its giving the Nets a split of the season series with the Knicks as well as pulling them to within one game of the Atlantic division leaders.

If the teams end the season with the same record, though, splitting the season series may prove to be advantageous to the Nets.

NEW YORK ? After seeing the Brooklyn Nets drop their fifth home game in their last six attempts last night to the Utah Jazz, who came into the game with a 4-10 road record, I was curious as to how the game unfolded from the very last play to the beginning of the third quarter, when the Nets held a 13-point lead.

Tonight, at 7:00 P.M., the Brooklyn Nets will battle the crosstown-rival New York Knicks at Barclays Center.

The Nets, losers of four straight games, won the previous matchup 96-89 in overtime, but Brook Lopez has been ruled out. Lopez was instrumental in the first matchup, and after initially being deemed a game-time decision tonight, he's officially been ruled out.

The Knicks, meanwhile, are off to their best start since the 1995-1996 season and are 10 games over .500 for the first time since April 2001.

Deron Williams has had a tough 16 games this year and is playing through a plethora of injuries right now but he won't use them as am excuse for his poor play.

Poor play for Williams is still above average and All-star quality for most and anyone who watches him play knows he runs the Brooklyn Nets and even with his poor shooting he is leading in many ways that help the team win.

One thing you love about superstars is that they are never satisfied with how they are playing and Williams is one of those superstars.

NEW YORK ? Despite the fact that the NBA has opted to eliminate the center position from it's All-Star ballot, Tyson Chandler and Brook Lopez showed the NBA that there are still at least two true 7-foot centers patrolling the paint in the Eastern conference.

The 25 day wait for the much anticipated game between the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks is here and it will indeed be played tonight at Barclays Center at 7pm. Tune in on TNT.

The game was postponed due to Hurricane Sandy and both teams are playing the second half of a back-to-back. Still, we expect there will be a lot of energy in the building. New York City, and many basketball fans across the United States will be watching the nationally televised game.

The great question is whether or not the building will be packed with mostly Nets or Knicks fans.

It seems as though the rest of the NBA Community has taken notice of what the Brooklyn Nets have built this offseason. Back on July 1, Deron Williams became a free-agent and literally held the short-term future of the Brooklyn Nets' franchise in the palm of his hands. With the simple stroke of a pen, he could have joined the Dallas Mavericks and left Brooklyn and the Barclays Center without a true franchise player, and that probably would have been true even if the Nets still managed to pull off the trade for Joe Johnson.

But now, that seems like it was such a long time ago.

The Giants have just won the Super Bowl. Normally that means time to turn our eyes towards Florida and spring training for the upcoming baseball season. Not this year, the Rangers and the Knicks are both making headlines this winter....

From Andy Furman of Ultimate NYG:

It is a nice problem to have, drinking in a Super Bowl title. Now that we have all come down to earth and the reality of the Giants having a 4th Super Bowl is with us, we are also experiencing the withdrawal accompanying the end of football in 2011. We'll have the combine, free agency, the draft, minicamp and preseason. But the cold of February is a bleak reminder of a long road ahead. We will have discussions about players and needs. One thing I am more than happy about is that there is no strike. The NFL is back, and that is a lift compared to this time last year.

Cablevision said today it is considering "several options to boost its stock price, including spinning off some of its diverse holdings". It did not say which businesses it would consider selling.
