The Yankees made the right move in giving Andrew Miller a long-term deal rather than David Robertson (King, June 9).

Miller, 30, signed a four-year contract worth $36 million this offseason with the Yankees. He is 17-for-17 in save opportunities with a 1.04 ERA in 25 games pitched this season. He has 43 strikeouts and has allowed only eight hits in 26 innings pitched.

Last season Robertson, 30, filled in the void left by all-time great Mariano Rivera in the closer role without a glitch. The Yankees chose to make a qualifying one-year offer to Robertson rather than work out a long term agreement. Robertson declined the Yankees offer and would eventually sign with the White Sox for four-years $46 million. He is 10-for-13 in save opportunities with a 2.19 ERA so far this season.

The Yankees are set to start a two-game series against the Washington Nationals tonight. Without the ability to use a DH, Alex Rodriguez is expected to sit both games (Murti, May 19).

Manager Joe Girardi made it clear that A-Rod will serve as the Yankees primary DH for the rest of the season in an attempt to keep the 39-year-old fresh. But the offense has been struggling as of late and could miss his presence in the line up.

In the past seven games, the Yankees have scored more than two runs only twice and have lost?five of their last six games.

When the New York Yankees signed CC Sabathia to his original 7-year, $161 million contract prior to the?2009 season and then extended his deal?to guarantee an eighth season and another $22 million (he also has a vesting option for 2017), they probably did not imagine that he would be a reclamation project in 2015, but that?s exactly what the big left-hander has become.

A degenerative knee issue cost Sabathia much of the 2014 season; he tossed just 46 innings with terrible results (3-4 with a 5.28 ERA). Despite having surgery to fix the knee?last July, Sabathia opted to put some weight back on his massive frame. In doing so, Sabathia claimed to feel stronger this spring than in the last two seasons when he made it a point to come into camp lighter.

The weight aside, Sabathia has not been able to recapture the speed on his four-seam fastball which has been declining for a few years now. The dip in velocity?began to hurt him in 2013, and in the few games he appeared in last season, his fastball speed?became an even bigger issue.

Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka held a press conference today with members of the media regarding the upcoming season (Hatch, April 4).

Many of the questions Tanaka received were regarding his velocity. Last year his fastball averaged 91.2 mph compared to the upper 80's he has been consistently hitting this spring.

"Because I am throwing more two-seamers the velocity is down a bit," Tanaka said through his Japanese translator, Shingo Horie. "As for my pitching style and my mechanics, I am trying to relax a little bit more when I am throwing."

While Alex Rodriguez has been busy mending relationships as he gets set for spring training, the veteran made sure to call up his replacement at third base, Chase Headley, just to say hello (NJ.com, Feb. 16).

"It was just more of an introduction," Headley said of A-Rod's call. "I think we both care about winning. That's the most important thing and that's what we talked about. That (other) stuff will sort itself out."

Of course, that "other stuff" Headley is referring to is the business of Rodriguez gunning for his old spot on the field. As it stands, A-Rod will start the season at DH, but since he's been out of the game for a year for a PED suspension, he will have to earn his playing time at third base.

Alex Rodriguez met with incoming commissioner Rob Manfred earlier this past week (Davidoff, Jan. 24).

A-Rod was the one that initiated this meeting with Manfred. In an attempt to create good will, there were no lawyers or player union representatives present. The goal was to ensure both sides were on the same page with his 2014 suspension coming to an end.

The last time A-Rod made a visit to the commissioners office was to receive his 211-game suspension stemming from the Biogensis investigation. Though the suspension would?ultimately be reduced to just the 2014 season. A-Rod is now clear?to make his return to the Yankees in 2015.
