NFC NFC Playoffs

Rookie quarterbacks Robert Griffin III of Washington and Russell Wilson of Seattle lead their teams into the playoffs. Griffin (102.4) and Wilson (100.0) are the only rookie quarterbacks in NFL history to post a 100.0+ passer rating.

Both rookie QBs have been complemented by strong running games. For the Redskins, rookie running back Alfred Morris finished second in the NFL with a team-record 1,613 rushing yards. Seahawks running back Marshawn Lunch ranked third in the league with 1,590 yards and was selected to his second Pro Bowl (first with Seattle).

Seattle and Washington enter the postseason as two of the hottest teams in the league. The Seahawks have won five in a row and seven of their past eight while the Redskins are riding a seven-game winning streak and are the fifth team in NFL history to make the playoffs after a 3-6 start.

Going into today, the Giants could have clinched a playoff spot with a win and losses by Chicago, Minnesota, Dallas and Washington. A Redskins tie also would have sufficed.

Some of that happened....

Minnesota (9-6) defeated Houston, 23-6. Washington (9-6) got by Philly, 27-20. Dallas (8-7) lost in OT to New Orleans and Chicago (8-6) plays Arizona in the late game.

Still Control Playoff Destiny, but Need Help for Division Title?

Yes, folks, we knew it was going to come to this. The Giants lost, the Redskins and Cowboys won. Everyone is 8-6 with two games remaining. Currently, under the NFL tiebreaking procedures (see below link), the Redskins are in first place.

According to the NFL, if the Giants win their final two games they will be in the playoffs. The division is basically out of reach right now. They would have to outplay both teams and hope each team split their final two games.

If the Giants hope to slow down the high powered Packers? offense today they need to look no further than the December 18th game film of the Packers? versus the Kansas City Chiefs.

The blueprint to HALOing the Packers? is to ?Master Chiefs.?

Put the corny Halo pun aside and the statement rings true. The Chiefs managed to slow down the undefeated Packers and limit them to only 14 points. The Chiefs? defense had a simple philosophy, force the Packers to run the ball.

Alex Smith was outgunned by Drew Brees 4 TDs to 3, but Smith had the final say, hitting TE Vernon Davis on a 14-yard TD strike with just seconds to go in regulation to send the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship Game for the first time in fourteen years.

The two teams combined for 32 fourth quarter points with four lead changes in the final four minutes.

The Giants, at 6-6, are right in the thick of the NFC playoff picture. They have lost four straight and their other two losses are against Seattle (who at 5-7 are still alive themselves) and Washington, a division rival that they have to play again.

Green Bay (12-0) and San Francisco (10-2) are in the North and West. New Orleans (9-3) is a week away from clinching the South. The East will come down to the Giants and the Cowboys (7-4).

This Sunday's game is a must-win for the Giants. ?A loss wouldn't eliminate them, but it would put them on the ropes with a standing-8 count.

The Green Bay Packers, the defending Super Bowl Champions, have emerged from the lockout a much stronger team than the one that walked away with the Lombardi Trophy last February.

Injuries to key players (Jermichael Finley, Ryan Grant, Nick Barnett, Mark Tauscher) set the Packers back last year, almost to the point where they did not qualify for the playoffs. It took a nosedive by the Giants for the Packers to get in. Once they got in, momentum took them the rest of the way.

Gilbride to Bears Rumors

This is the time of year that all types of rumors begin to circulate.? The Chicago Bears fired OC Ron Turner last week and are in search of his replacement.? Recently fired Redskins coach Jim Zorn is said to be a hot candidate.

So is Giants' OC Kevin Gilbride.? Only problem here is that Gilbride is under contract until next season, so the Bears would need permission to speak to him.

The Giants are coming into Sunday's NFC Showdown against the Carolina Panthers sporting a two-game losing streak. In their losses to the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, the Giants have managed just one offensive touchdown, and that came at 'garbage time' in their lopsided loss to Philly.

Meanwhile, the Panthers have been running roughshod over their opponents the past month or so, winning their last 3 and four of their last five.

The general mindset is that the Panthers will roll over the Giants this Sunday. I say, not so fast.

The Giants have shown amazing resilience over the past two seasons. Tell them they can't do something, they go right out and do it. Take away a weapon, or a player, they find a replacement. The Super Bowl champions have not missed a beat even with all the adversity they have been faced with.

But the latest developments may be too great for them to overcome. Yes, the Giants are 11-2, have the NFC East clinched with 3 games remaining and are going to playoffs fo the 4th year in a row. As the regular season winds down, though, the Giants are starting to look more and more like a paper tiger than a team that is on the verge of repeating as champions.

Here is some food for thought....
