While every red-blooded American football fan is pooh-poohing the impending punishment for the participants in the infamous "Bounty-Gate" affair, judges and juries across the land await to see if the NFL is really serious about protecting it's players.

Commissioner Roger Goodell's actions, if too light, could open the league up to damaging lawsuits and fatal exposure. Lawsuits are the only thing outside of a meteor strike that could take down the high-flying NFL.

That is why Goodell must banish, or suspend indefinitely, Gregg Williams. He must also suspend and fine Saints' Head Coach Sean Payton, fine GM Mickey Loomis and slap the Saints in general with a hefty fine.

The NFL season is difficult enough for teams and players to navigate through healthy. The game by nature is one where collateral damage in the form of physical injury is unavoidable and collectively accepted. Unless, the injuries are caused by design....

The bounty system that has followed veteran coach Gregg Williams across his NFL career may have been an acceptable practice in decades past, but in the modern day NFL, where player safety and sportsmanship are at the forefront of Commissioner Roger Goodell's agenda, it is completely intolerable.

Considering how long bounties have been used in pro football, is there a double standard in enforcing the NFL rule prohibiting the use of them?

Mark Kriegel of Fox Sports asks a lot of good questions and gives us a lot to think about. He paints a picture where Tony Dungy and other (see Joe Horn video) corroborate that bounties have been prevalent for years but (that they) quietly never snitched and ratted out violators.

As this ball of twine called "Bounty-Gate" unwinds (I could be the one who named this, BTW...how original) we are learning how widespread the "scandal" goes and to what extent.

Former Indianapolis Colts' head coach Tony Dungy is claiming Peyton Manning's neck woes began after he was viciously sacked by the Redskins in a 2006 game. The Redskins' defense was run back then by Gregg Williams, who is at the vortex of the NFL's investigation into violating the league's policy against bounties: rewarding players for injuring - or intending to injure - opposing players.

The Giants played Williams' Saints in Week 12 this season. Some are suggesting that the Giants may have been "bountied" in that game as several players were injured after getting hit excessively and illegally...
