NFL Offseason

Jerry Reese has stated the Giants may not be as aggressive as they were last March in free agency, but also said he would explore every avenue to improve the roster. With yesterday's rumors regarding the Giants' sudden interest in ?Ndamakong Suh circulating throughout the internet, it's very possible that Reese is ready to let some more veterans go in order to do some serious bidding.

Last year, the Giants were mandated by management to upgrade the offense. They went headlong into free agency by signing veteran OL Geoff Schwartz and RB Rashad Jennings. Both players had their debut seasons with the Giants cut short and hampered by injuries. The club is still high on both players and expect them to produce as advertised this season.

Other free agents the Giants are expected to attempt to re-sign are S Antrel Rolle, CB Walter Thurmond, FB Henry Hynoski, LB Jacquian Williams and S Stevie Brown.

Some other housekeeping items on the to-do list are tendering TE Larry Donnell and CB Chandler Fenner, who are both exclusive rights free agents this spring.

Only eight teams opted to place the franchise tag on players this afternoon and no teams chose to use the exclusive franchise or transition tag. From the NFL:

A club can designate one ?franchise? player or one ?transition? player among its veteran free agents.

Our man Jimmy Kempski of NFC East blogging fame has been scouring the transcripts of participants at the NFL Combine this week to gain some hints on where some of these potential NFLers would like to spend their careers. Of the NFC East teams mentioned below, the Eagles and Cowboys seem to hold the edge over the Giants and Redskins

From Jimmy.....

Some of these are interesting to note (like TE Nick Kasa of Colorado), but take these for what they?re worth (usually just a reporter asking a prospect a direct question about a specific team). If you?re a Skins fan, read no further. Nobody mentioned your team that I can see so far. In alphabetical order:

The NFL is kicking around a concept that will push the beginning of the offseason a few weeks. Translation: the Combine would be conducted in March, free agency pushed to April and the Draft into May.

According to ESPN's John Clayton....

The plan must be approved by the NFL Players Association, but the league already is pushing it aggressively, meeting on the issue most recently -- but not exclusively -- Thursday night in Indianapolis, where the NFL scouting combine is being held.

With free agency right around the corner, let's take a peek at the Giants' internal restricted FAs and what their options are....

ERFAs: ?C Jim Cordle, DE Adrian Tracy and DL Justin Trattou

ERFAs , or exclusive rights free agents, are players with less than three accrued NFL seasons. They cannot sign with another team and, because they have few options, usually sign the tender offered to them by their current team. ?We expect the Giants will tender all three. Cordle has been around for a few seasons and can play guard as well as center. They've waited to reap the benefits on Tracy, so he'll be back. Trattou spent the majority of 2012 on IR and wasn't released, so he's in the plans somewhere as well. Nothing is guaranteed, of course. They have to make the roster first.
