Giants' WR Odell Beckham, Jr. has been named The Sporting News NFL Rookie of the Year. (Sporting News, Jan 23).

Beckham, the 12th overall selection n the 2014 NFL Draft out of LSU, comes from a family of athletes and attended Isadore Newman High School in New Orleans - the same high school that Eli and Peyton Manning attended.

?Peyton and Eli were back in town a couple years ago, and went up to Newman to work out," Archie Mannng told Sporting News. "They asked if they could put a couple of receivers out there to throw to. Odell was sophomore then, and Eli said at the time 'This is a pretty good looking little receiver.' I don?t think they knew he would be that good."

The Pro Bowl will be played this weekend in Hawaii despite rumblings that the game should be cancelled due to disinterest and the ridiculous rules put in place that take the physicality out of the game.

A new format has been installed where teams are chosen by Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders from the pool of players elected to the game.

The Giants are sending just one player to the game: S Antrel Rolle, who is an alternate filling in for Seattle's Earl Thomas.

The NFC-AFC Pro Bowl, perhaps the only thing the NFL has never gotten right, is being restructured. The game has always been for the fans, so the league and the players' association are basically handing the process over to them in a fantasy football-like format.

The Pro Bowl has been a joke for years and this week the players vowed to ratchet up the intensity to win back fans and restore some legitimacy to the event.

he NFC did their part. The AFC, not so much. The Nationals took heed to Peyton Manning's comments that the game should be taken more seriously. ?They walloped the Americans, 62-35, behind their two Super Bowl MVP QBs (Drew Brees and Eli Manning), superstar RB Adrian Peterson and rookie QB sensation Russell Wilson.

"It was a little more high intensity than in years' past," said the Giants' Victor Cruz, as per NFL.com. "It really did feel like a real game out there. People were hitting. It wasn't touch football; guys were laying some licks. It had the energy of a real game. My body feels like it just went through a real game."

The Pro Bowl will be played this Sunday in Hawaii (7:00 PM ET, NBC). I know you are all enthralled by this. For a game that is supposed to be for the benefit of the fans, it's become anything but. Most fans would not miss the game if the league chose to discontinue it.

Giants' DE Jason Pierre-Paul, WR Victor Cruz and G Chris Snee have been named to the NFC Pro Bowl roster. It is the fourth time Snee has been selected and the first time for Cruz. JPP was selected to the game for the second consecutive season. He did not attend last year's game as the Giants advanced to the Super Bowl.

Pierre-Paul (6.5 sacks) made it primarily on his reputation and sensational 2011 season. He, along with the rest of the Giants' pass rush, have struggled mightily this season. ?He does have 12 tackles for losses, however. Teams guarded him differently in 2012, leading to a sharp reduction in sacks and tackles. He had 16.5 sacks last season.

Cruz received the most votes for an NFC wideout in the fan voting. ?He has 82 catches for 1,040 yards and 9 TDs. Cruz burst onto the scene as game-breaking player last year ,when he set a franchise record for receiving yardage. His salsa TD celebration dance has become a global sensation.

This isn't breaking news by any stretch, but something's gotta be done with the Pro Bowl. NFL Network analyst and draft guru Mike Mayock, who is in Indianapolis this week for the NFL Combine, says the game is bordering on the ridiculous and has become an embarrassment.

From Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk:

I asked him which event will more closely resemble real football ? the Combine or the Pro Bowl. As to the latter, Mayock was candid.

Let's get this straight - one more time. I do not like the Pro Bowl. I believe it makes a mockery of America's Game.

The NFL is doing well enough where it can afford to cease this inane charade of a football event. It is a joke. It reminds me of Battle of the Network Stars. ?Please stop it.

They advertise the "game" as if it were some type of a competitive event. It's not.

The NFL will announce the rosters for the 2012 Pro Bowl tonight at 7pm. If you have nothing to do, it is on the NFL Network.

Don't expect a parade of Giants to be headed to Hawaii. ?The only Giants that have a shot at being on the initial roster are QB Eli Manning, DE Jason Pierre-Paul and WR Victor Cruz.

Manning has the misfortune of being in the same category as Aaron Rodgers - a cinch for league MVP - and Drew Brees - who just set an NFL record for passing yards in a single season.

Lots of talk about the Pro Bowl balloting and how Giants players are getting boned by NFL fans in the voting. Yeah, it's unfortunate, because some of the guys could use the notoriety. There aren't enough Kardashians to go around, so getting to the Pro Bowl is the only other way to get you some media exposure...

Other than that, who cares? The Pro Bowl is a waste of time. The game should never be played. The other sports can be played under modified rules, so their All-Star games make sense. But football can only be played at one speed. I say stop playing the game and just have a TV event like Bob Hope used to do with the All-Americans.

Voting players to the Pro Bowl is not something Giant fans put at the top of their list. Not that the team has doesn't have any Pro Bowl-caliber players, because they do. With five week remaining before the voting closes, the Giants have no players leading in votes at their position in the NFC. ?The 9-0 Packers, by contrast, have 10. There are only 19 positions, by the way.

The Pro Bowl is back in Hawaii this year after last year's ill-fated experiment to play it in the Super Bowl host city the week before the Super Bowl.

The NFL's version of their All-Star game had been played in Honolulu from 1980-2009 and had become a tradition of sorts. Both fans and players were not pleased with the site change.

Last year's game, played in Miami the week before the Super Bowl, was sparsely attended. The league will continue to hold the game the Sunday in-between the conference championships and the Super Bowl as opposed to the week after the Super Bowl.
