It looked a a rerun from the first six weeks of the season in San Diego this afternoon as the Giants played slow and sloppy in a 37-14 loss to the Chargers (6-7). ?With the defeat, the Giants (5-8) put an official end to their faux playoff intentions and the hope of finishing the season strong.

Turnovers and mistakes ruled the day for the Blue as they were outhustled and out-executed by a Chargers team that simply felt they had more to play for. ?The Giants were never in this game, folks. They fell behind, 24-0, before the half and could not mount any kind of a significant comeback. It was a hard one to watch.

The Chargers were led by QB Philip Rivers (21/28, 249 yds, 3 TD, 0 INT) and RBs Ryan Matthews (29/103/1) and Danny Woodhead (94 total yards) and rookie WR Keenan Allen (2 TD catches). Matthews is the first back to gain 100 yards on the Giants since Carolina's DeAngelo Williams in Week 3.

Just a snoozy first half by the Giants in San Diego for the Giants this afternoon. Miscues on offense and missteps on defense have put them in a 24-0 hole in this clearly one-sided game in the Southern California sun.

The fans, booed the hated Eli Manning for the entire first half, as their Chargers took advantage of two more Giant turnovers for scores. The Giants lead the NFL in turnovers with 32 and have not gone a single game this season now without committing at least one.

In the first quarter after hitting Hakeem Nicks for a 51-yard gain, Manning was picked off on a pass that deflected off an apathetic Rueben Randle. The Chargers would capitalize on the turnover on a 43-yard TD strike from Philip Rivers to rookie WR Keenan Allen.

The Giants came into this game needing a win to stay atop the NFC East and they got it in emphatic fashion. They sliced up the sloppy New Orleans Saints in the rain at MetLife tonight, 52-27, with big plays on offense, defense and special teams.

It was the most points the Giants scored in a regular season game since Dec 20. 1986, when they pinned 55 on the Packers to close out the regular season en route to a Super Bowl victory.

RB David Wilson, the team's first round selection in this year's NFL Draft who the Giants had been dry-docking all season, broke out in a big way with 327 all-purpose yards. He has 227 of them on kickoff returns and another hundred rushing. He scored three times.

The Giants' defense faces another unenviable challenge this afternoon when Drew Brees brings his aerial show to MetLife Stadium. This matchup has given the Giants fits the past few seasons since Brees took over as Saints' QB.

In those three games, New Orleans defeated the Giants by scores of 30-7, 48-27 and 49-24. In each f those contests, the Giants found themselves flatfooted and out of place on defense while the offense sputtered in its attempt to keep up with Brees.

This time around, the Saints (5-7) are not the team they have been the past few seasons. Bountygate saw to that. Without head coach Sean Payton on the sidelines to shift gears for the offense, they have had some issues in both the play calling and time management.

The NFL is a shootout league. You either score or die. Right now, the Packers, Patriots and Saints are hard to beat because they own three of the four elite QBs in the NFL.

The Giants just happen to own the fourth.

Here are the GFB staff predictions for tonight's Giants-Cowboys game - the biggest game of the year so far for the Blue. Obviously we all have strong feelings about a win, but we feel it will be another nail-biter...

Rich Resch: 34-31 Giants...Both QBs throw for 300 yards and 3 TDs.

Dan Stack: Giants win 27-24....I see another spirited effort with the Giants just outlasting the Cowboys. A win will immediately help the Giants in the confidence category, but of course there is still more work needed to be done.

The Giants had a legion of players sit out practice yesterday, some couldn't go and others were held back for precautionary reasons.

C David Baas (neck, headaches), LB Michael Boley (hamstring), RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot), LB Mark Herzlich (ankle), RB Brandon Jacobs (hamstring), LB Spencer Paysinger (hamstring), S Kenny Phillips (knee), DE Dave Tollefson (knee) and DE Osi Umenyiora (ankle, knee) all watched while CB Prince Amukamara (back) and WR Mario Manningham (knee) were limited.

Tom Coughlin had few answers, especially when it came to Baas' head and neck conundrum..

Before we turn our attention to the Eagles, let's recap the three key offensive plays from Monday night's win over the Vikings:

1) The 73-yard run by Brandon Jacobs on the Giants' first drive of the second quarter. They hadn't done anything on offense up until this point, and Jacobs took the ball all the way to the Vikings' 14-yard line, setting up his own one-yard touchdown run four plays later.

2) On first-and-10 from their own 46, and with less than two minutes to go in the half, Eli Manning connected with Hakeem Nicks on a 30-yard pass to the Minnesota 24. Nine plays later, Manning hit Kevin Boss in the end zone to give Big Blue a 14-3 lead going into the half.

From NFL.com:

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre has told teammates and associates that he doesn't believe he can play Monday night, and his NFL-record starts streak will end at 297 games, sources with knowledge of the situation said.

"It does not look good," one source close to Favre said Sunday when asked about the feasibility of the quarterback playing in the Vikings' game against the New York Giants. The game was rescheduled to be played in Detroit because of the collapse of the Metrodome roof in Minneapolis.

From the NY Times' Judy Battista:

The Giants? flight to Minneapolis was diverted to Kansas City on Saturday because of a snowstorm. Late Saturday, their game against the Minnesota Vikings was also diverted ? to Monday night.

The N.F.L. said the decision to delay the game for a day was made on the recommendation of Metrodome officials. The storm dumped 15 or more inches of snow on the area. As much as two feet was forecast to fall before it was over. Besides the uncertainty about whether the Giants would be able to get to Minneapolis on Sunday morning, there were concerns about whether workers could safely remove the snow from the Metrodome?s roof.
The game will be played at 8 p.m. Eastern on Monday. Fox Sports announced via Twitter on Saturday that it would broadcast the game to the New York, Minneapolis and Rochester, Minn., markets. Baltimore and Houston will play the regularly scheduled Monday night game on ESPN.

As Brett Favre prepares to start - or not to start - Sunday's game against the Giants, there's another streak that's about to hit a milestone.

Giants' quarterback Eli Manning will make his 100th consecutive start when?New York?takes on?the?Vikings tomorrow afternoon at the Metrodome. As the Associated Press?points out,?"Besides Favre and Manning, the only other NFL quarterbacks to start 100 straight games are Eli's big brother, Peyton Manning of the Colts, Tom Brady of the Patriots, Ron Jaworski of the Eagles and Joe Ferguson of the?Bills. Miami's Dan Marino would have qualified, but missed the lockout?games."

Manning considers himself lucky.

Brett Favre practiced today in Minnesota, but he did not throw any passes. The school of thought here is that Favre will start on Sunday and be relieved early in the game by Tavaris Jackson.

This way, he keeps his streak of consecutive games alive and, the at the same time, gives the Vikings a better chance to win the football game.

Remember what happened last year? The Giants certainly do. New York got crushed by the Vikings, 44-7, in the season finale at the Metrodome in January. It was the end to a very disappointing season for Big Blue. You don't have to remind the Giants about that game.

"Let's just say we haven't forgotten what happened there," right guard Chris Snee said in a Wall Street Journal?article. "We know what the final score was, and we know what happened in there. It's already been talked about. Let's leave it at that."

Let's go back and review that day:

The Giants' rushing game can be downright scary if you are light on your defensive line. The Vikings are not. Their line is one of the league's best.

This Sunday, something's gotta give when these two units square off vs one another.

Tom Coughlin met the media this morning in preparation for this week's game vs the Vikings in Minnesota........

"Good morning. We're preparing this week for a very talented Minnesota Vikings football team, a team that Leslie Frazier has taken over. In the last two games that they played, they're 2-0 under him, they've averaged, I believe, 39 carries per game, they are a talented outfit, whether you look at special teams with Harvin as the return man.

On defense, I believe they are fourth in the league against the run, they are eighth in the league with the run. They are playing at home, so it is an exciting week and a really thorough and necessary preparation for this very good team."

The Giants return to Minnesota this Sunday, the location of last year's dismal finale.

Last time out, the battered Giants had their hats handed to them in New Jersey the week before by Carolina, 41-7, and were looking at a long off-season.? The Vikings were priming the pump to make a run at the Super Bowl.

The Vikings scored the first 44 points before the Giants got on the scoreboard in the 4th quarter on a 1-yard Danny Ware TD run.? The final was 44-7.
