The biggest story of the Jets' offseason was their purge - Mike Maccagnan's systematic dismantling of the roster by getting rid of every high- or moderately-priced veteran he could find. Some were outraged, considering it to be proof that the GM didn't know what he was doing. Others thought it was proof of the Jets' plan to tank.

Just curious: Is anyone complaining now?

Never mind that the Jets are 2-2, proving that even if they're not good, they certainly are more capable than anyone gave them credit for being. Just look at the long list of veterans Maccagnan purged from his team. Look at what they're doing - or not doing in most cases. Look at how far they've fallen from what they were.

Jameis Winston threw for 332 and three touchdowns without an interception, and Nick Folk kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired to give the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a 25-23 victory over the winless New York Giants on Sunday.

Folk redeemed himself after missing two field goals and an extra point earlier in the day, booting the winner after Winston answered Eli Manning's second TD pass of the day with an impressive drive that began at his 25.

The Giants (0-4) lost on a last-second field goal for the second straight week. They took a 23-22 lead on Rhett Ellison's 2-yard TD reception with 3:16 remaining. Manning threw to Odell Beckham Jr., in the rear of the end zone for a 2-point conversion that was disallowed because the receiver had stepped out of bounds before making the catch. >> Read more

The 2016 Cleveland Browns finished 1-15, ranking 28th in passing offense, 27th in receiving offense, and 31st in total yards allowed. Are the 2017 Jets worse?

According to ESPN's Football Power Index, the answer is yes.

"FPI believes the Jets are 7.9 points worse per game than the average NFL team, whereas the Browns were minus-7.4 last preseason, and it thinks all three parts of the Jets are a liability. The gruesome details: 5.2 points worse than average on offense, 2.1 points worse on defense and 0.6 points worse on special teams."

GEICO SportsNite: Harris release 00:01:31
Jeane Coakley and Ralph Vacchiano discuss the direction the New York Jets are headed after releasing veteran linebacker David Harris.

Ralph Vacchiano Facebook | Twitter | Archive

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Almost every recognizable player has been purged from the Jets roster, which is now younger and less expensive than any team they've had in years. They will be led by a journeyman quarterback, who may only be keeping the seat warm for a second-year quarterback not good enough to take a single snap last year.

It's hard to know all that and see a roster that isn't exactly overflowing with talent and come to any conclusion other than this: The Jets are tanking this season with their eyes set on the No. 1 pick in next year's quarterback-rich draft, where they can finally get the franchise quarterback they've been searching for since Joe Namath.

Sounds far-fetched? Perhaps. Then again, when Jets GM Mike Maccagnan was asked that question point blank on Tuesday evening, hours after cutting another veteran (linebacker David Harris) and telling another he would be leaving soon (receiver Eric Decker), he didn't exactly say no...

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY:

The Jets began the reshaping of their roster and the first of what could be many moves to help clear salary cap space on Thursday as they released two veterans -- kicker Nick Folk and right tackle Breno Giacomini.

The moves clear about $7.5 million in salary cap space and leave the Jets somewhere around $10 million under the projected NFL salary cap. They were actually over until last week, when they declined to pick up the option on veteran left tackle Ryan Clady.

We've looked at some of the roster decisions facing the Jets as we head into the offseason over the past few weeks. Readers overwhelmingly voted to keep Eric DeckerNick Mangold and David Harris and to dump Darrelle Revis, but were torn on Brandon Marshall and Sheldon Richardson. How about some of the other decisions facing the front office and coaching staff?

Of course young players like Leonard Williams and Darron Lee or players that performed well in 2016 like James Carpenter and Bilal Powell will return in 2017, but that about those whose performance was more disappointing?

Jets QB Bryce Petty rebounded from last Monday night's poor performance against the Colts during Sunday's overtime win against the 49ers.

Petty went 23 of 35 for 257 yards while throwing no touchdowns and one interception -- which came on his first pass of the game.

He helped lead two fourth quarter scoring drives, the first being a 66-yard touchdown drive which was capped by Petty running in a two-point conversion. He then drove the Jets 33 yards, resulting in Nick Folk's game-tying field goal with 38 seconds remaining.

Bowles and Petty on OT win 00:01:58
Jets head coach Todd Bowles and quarterback Bryce Petty discuss the Jets' 23-17 OT win against San Francisco.

Bilal Powell ran for 145 yards, including the game-ending 19-yard touchdown in overtime, to help Bryce Petty and the New York Jets rally from 14 points down to beat the San Francisco 49ers 23-17 in overtime on Sunday.

Petty threw an interception on his first pass of the game and the Jets (4-9) trailed 14-0 less than 5 minutes into the game. San Francisco (1-12) led 17-3 at halftime, but fell flat after that and lost a franchise-worst 12th straight game.

Powell took over from there and scored his second TD of the game on New York's first possession of overtime after Petty's scramble and 26-yard pass to Robby Anderson put the Jets in field goal range.

Vacchiano: Petty takes over 00:05:32
SNY NFL Insider Ralph Vacchiano breaks down the Jets' 41-10 loss to the Colts on Monday night.

Andrew Luck was nearly perfect in his return from a concussion, throwing for four touchdowns, three to Dwayne Allen, in the Indianapolis Colts' 41-10 romp Monday night past the inept New York Jets.

Not that Luck had to work very hard against the hosts, who were booed by a much-less-than-filled MetLife Stadium almost from the outset.

Luck missed last week's loss to Pittsburgh, cleared the NFL's concussion protocol on the weekend, and came back in style with a prime-time performance. He lifted Indianapolis (6-6) into a tie for the lead in the AFC South with Tennessee and Houston.

You have to feel sorry for Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan. After the special teams unit was a liability last year and probably contributed to at least a couple of losses, the team did everything they possibly could to upgrade the special teams units. They specifically targeted special teams standouts from other teams and retained those players over others that had upside or more chance of making offensive and defensive contributions. They even replaced the coach and upgraded at a few key positions, including using a draft pick on a punter.

Every contingency was covered apart from the one element of their special teams unit that the team had always been able to rely upon in the past; the kicking game. In fact, retaining Nick Folk was further evidence that special teams were viewed as a high priority because while he beat out Ross Martin on merit, a previous regime might have been prepared to risk some rookie growing pains to save some money.

It's hard to believe that a team quarterbacked by Ryan Fitzpatrick was filled with fantasy forces last season, but there they were, all over the Jets' roster. Brandon Marshall was right there was the most prolific receivers in the league and Eric Decker was right behind him. Even Chris Ivory put up good enough numbers to be a solid backup running back option.

And then there was Fitzpatrick, with a career year, putting up numbers that had him only a notch below the best quarterbacks in the league. It was an uncharacteristic and franchise-record-setting explosion.

Nick Folk has patiently waited over nine months to kick in an NFL game again.

Fully healed from a quadriceps injury that cut short his season, and facing yet another challenge for his job, the veteran kicker is eager to walk onto the field at MetLife Stadium on Thursday night when the New York Jets take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in the teams' preseason opener.

"I'm ready to play," Folk said. "I've been ready to play since the beginning of OTAs. It'll be good for me to get back out there and kind of get the juices flowing again. I'm good and feel good out there."

With issues still to address at quarterback, offensive line and linebacker to name a few the Jets are not done in free agency, but the simple fact is that for all intents other than finding some middle ground in the Ryan Fitzpatrick saga, this team's free agency is pretty much done.

Other than a few more signings and then some of the early round picks from the draft, the Jets can't count on undrafted free agents or maybe even some June free agent additions to provide much more than the roster already has.

I figured it might be a good exercise as we prepare for the draft to go spot-by-spot on the depth chart as it now stands to look at the strengths and weaknesses of the current 2016 Jets roster.

On the Jets cutting Antonio Cromartie:

"It probably has as much to do with the financial end of it, more than anything else. I hope that he would be a guy that they can work on a new contract with. I think he has some mileage left.

It perhaps wasn't a surprise that the Jets would have two costly special teams breakdowns in their biggest game of the year. Ryan Quigley's 21-yard shank from his own end zone set up the Bills' opening score as the Jets trailed from that point onwards.

This was compounded when Randy Bullock missed a 40-yard field goal with the Jets already trailing 13-0.

It's difficult to be too harsh on the team for individual mistakes by their punter and replacement kicker, because the main complaints against the special teams unit has been the personnel filling out each of the special teams units rather than the specialists themselves.

Jets kicker Nick Folk could miss a month, according to Brian Costello (Nov. 9). Jets head coach Todd Bowles said it could be a 4-6 week injury.

Folk suffered a strained quad during warmups and was unable to kick. Punter Ryan Quigley handled the kicking duties on Sunday.

To fill the kicker position, the Jets worked out Billy Cundiff, Garrett Hartley, Kyle Brindza and Randy Bullock, according to Costello (Nov. 9).

With the Jets on the bye, we thought it would be a good time to look ahead at the Jets upcoming offseason and get an early look at what we can expect in terms of direction and plans. ?In the NFL, the salary cap drives those plans and there's no better person to talk to than Jason Fitzgerald from OverTheCap.com. ?Jason started tracking the Jets cap in 2008 and turned NYJetsCap.com into a respected portrayal of the Jets cap. ?Eventually Jason decided to cover the entire AFC East and then the entire NFL last year under the banner of Over The Cap.

We asked Jason some questions about how the team is faring under John Idzik and what lies ahead in this two part article. First up, how do we grade the 2013 offseason and how much space can the Jets expect to spend on free agents?

TJB: Since there's not much left to do when it comes to the Jets current cap year, how do you think new GM John Idzik did in navigating his first offseason?
