The Yankees announced they have traded RHP Ronald Herrera to the Rangers in exchange for LHP Reiver Sanmartin.

The 21-year-old Sanmartin spent the 2017 season in A-ball where he threw 66 innings (11 starts, three relief appearances) with a 2.41 ERA. Sanmartin currently sits upper 80s with his fastball, and has a decent changeup and slider to go along with it.

Since he signed with the Rangers as a 19-year-old in 2015, Sanmartin must wait another year before he is eligible to join the 40-man roster.

The New York Yankees have some important roster choices to make by today's deadline to make changes to their 40-man roster before December's Rule 5 Draft, with any prospect added to the roster protected from potential selection.

The Yankees have a slew of players to consider this season, some of whom are considered among their top-30 prospects.

As of Friday, the Yankees' 40-man roster stands at 39, so if they add more than one player, they'll need to determine which players they will let go in order to make room for any more additions. Some of these decisions should be easy for the organization.

New York Yankees RHP Branden Pinder has elected to undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday after sustaining a partially torn UCL, according to the Wall Street Journal's Jared Diamond.

Pinder, 27, was placed on the disabled list over the weekend with a partially torn UCL in his throwing arm after he felt pain in his lone relief appearance of the season on April 20.

He allowed two runs in one inning in his only outing this season. Last year, he had a 2.93 ERA in 25 appearances, striking out 25 batters in 27 2/3 innings.

Pinder will become the second Yankees pitcher this season to undergo Tommy John surgery. Nick Rumbelow underwent it earlier this season.

Yes, the New York Yankees have compiled one of the best backend of the bullpen combinations in all of baseball. But, in doing so, have the Yankees neglected to pay enough attention to how the club will reach the dominant combination of Dellin Betances, Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman?

We touched on the fact that the starting rotation held some of the responsibility some weeks back, mentioning the importance of each member's ability to pitch deeper into games if they wanted to be considered an ace. Even if this improves across the line, the backend of the bullpen cannot pitch daily.

This makes the relievers charged with providing middle relief innings, as well as aiding the backend of the bullpen when rest is needed, quite important. To that end, the Yankees have decided to take a pretty big chance on relatively inexperienced relievers.
