N.C. State on Monday announced the signing of Markell Johnson, the No. 10-ranked point guard in the Class of 2016 according to 247Sports.com.

 

The 6-1 guard from Cleveland, Ohio, averaged more than 30 points and seven rebounds per game for East Tech last season en route to earning Cleveland.com's Boys Basketball Player of the Year award.

 

"He's an explosive combo guard who is extremely athletic and can play multiple positions for us," said NC State head coach Mark Gottfried. "He's a great addition to our backcourt and we look forward to Markell joining our program."

 

Johnson joins the talented incoming recruiting class of five-star guard Dennis Smith Jr., five-star Turkish center Omer Yurtseven, and Darius Hicks. The Wolfpack also hosted 6-8 power forward Ted Kapita, who has decommitted from SMU.

Caleb finished fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 11.5 points per game, while Cody averaged 6 points per game. The twins are North Carolina natives.

Point guard Dennis Smith Jr. enrolled early at North Carolina State for the spring semester after he graduated from high school early, according to the News & Observer.

"It's a dream come true to for me, having grown up an N.C. State fan," Smith told the News & Observer. "For the way they recruited me, I was happy to show loyalty and commit. I'm excited to be a part of the program."

At 6-foot-2, 185 pounds, Smith is the projected No. 5 pick in 2017 by DraftExpress.com. He graduated in December from Trinity Christian in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

While playing for Raleigh (N.C.) Word of God Academy, Rawle Alkins is giving equal time to Tar Heel State schools North Carolina and N.C. State, and hopes to set up some official visits soon.

The 6-foot-5 Brooklyn native is also nursing an injured ankle but is slated to return home to New York for several games next month.

"It's funny down here with college basketball," he wrote in his latest USA Today blog, 'Rawle's Report.' "The fans here are crazy!

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) North Carolina State has already earned a spot in a bowl. The Wolfpack want a good one, and the best way to earn that is to keep winning.

North Carolina State begins a season-ending two-game homestand Saturday against a Syracuse team that gave No. 1 Clemson a scare.

The Wolfpack (6-4, 2-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) reached bowl eligibility by beating Boston College last week, and now the goal is to move up the ACC's postseason pecking order.

Dennis Smith Jr. has announced that he will be graduating high school early, and will enroll at N.C. State in January.

"It's mainly for rehab purposes," Smith Jr. said on ESPNU Thursday. "I can rehab everyday there, and thankfully my grades are good enough for me to do it early."

Smith Jr., who committed to the Wolfpack in September, went on to say that rehab on his ACL following surgery Aug. 7 has been going even better than the original plan.

This was Ingram's second meeting with Coach K and the staff since Friday. He met with Kansas on Saturday and N.C. State on Monday and is set to meet with North Carolina head coach Roy Williams Wednesday before announcing next Monday.

After watching him play recently in West Virginia, North Carolina coach Roy Williams met Tuesday with 2015 Bishop Gorman big man Stephen Zimmerman in Las Vegas.

"He was basically just telling me how important I am, and what my role at UNC would be," the 7-foot Zimmerman told SNY.tv. "He said he is going to make good use of every viewing he gets by visiting as much as he's allowed. We talked about a possible official to UNC."

North Carolina coach Roy Williams underwent a robotic partial nephrectomy at UNC Hospitals Wednesday morning to remove a tumor from his right kidney, the school announced.

Dr. Eric Wallen,?a professor of urology at North Carolina, and co-surgeon Dr. Mathew Raynor led the surgical team, which took three and a half hours to complete the operation. Doctors discovered the presence of the tumor during a physical earlier this month.

Dr. Wallen says Williams, 62, should be able to coach when the Tar Heels begin practice for the 2012-13 season on Oct. 13th. Williams may have a second surgery to remove a tumor from his left kidney at a later date and could be sidelined for a few practices.

The uncovering of the rampant disregard for rules at North Carolina during the Butch Davis regime just won't end. The latest revelation involves Giants' WR Hakeem Nicks - who, according to reports - played his final year after being deemed academically ineligible.

Nicks left UNC after his junior year in 2008 and was drafted in the first round by the Giants the next April. Since then, the University has been sanctioned for multiple infractions leading to Davis' dismissal and Nicks personally has been accused of providing "impermissible assistance?to current players in the form of travel, lodging, entertainment and other expenses. The value of Nicks? assistance was listed in a university report as $3,300."

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- One of the most entertaining scenes here at the Nike Global Challenge happened off the court Friday when North Carolina coach Roy Williams -- and many others -- got a good laugh at the expense of Phoenix Suns scout John Shumate.

The laughs began when Dennis Marshall, the father of former Carolina point guard Kendall Marshall, approached Shumate to talk about his son, the Suns' first-round draft pick.

A first-round draft pick of the Knicks in 1992, Davis will replace Jerod Haase, the new UAB coach, on Roy Williams' staff.

"I am very excited, thankful and honored to re-join the Carolina basketball program as an assistant to Coach Williams," said Davis. "I loved being a part of college basketball during my time at ESPN by attending practices and games and developing relationships with players and coaches. North Carolina's chances at another ?NCAA championship appeared to take a major hit Sunday when point guard Kendall Marshall suffered a fractured right wrist midway through the second half of the team's 87-73 victory over Creighton.

Marshall was injured after being fouled ?by Ethan Wragge on a drive to the basket with 10:56 remaining. He crashed to the floor hard but remained in the game until the 1:54 mark.

"Let's get the bad stuff out of the way first," Carolina coach Roy Williams said. "Kendall has a fractured wrist and that's all I can tell you. We don't know. He's got a fracture of the scaphoid bone of the right wrist. ?
