Raiders players were told Monday that rookie Derek Carr will get the start over veteran Matt Schaub when Oakland opens the season against the Jets at MetLife Stadium next Sunday, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports (Fox Sports, Sept. 1).

Carr, 23, a second-round pick out of Fresno State, was 30-for-45 for 326 yards, with four touchdowns and one interception in the preseason.

Schaub, 33, is entering his 11th NFL season and first with Oakland. He spent the first three seasons with Atlanta and last seven with Houston. He was a frequent target of fans' unhappiness in his final year with the Texans.

We're back home and we already miss being part of the craziness in Cortland, but that doesn't mean we're going to lose track of the goings on at training camp. Here's some of what's emerging today according to the beat reporters in Cortland, click the links to see the original sources.

What issue??-- After Brian Baldinger's comments on Geno Smith, Rex Ryan told reporters he?had no issues?with Smith's conditioning. Smith also refuted the story himself today, the first time he talked to the press since Baldinger's comments. ?Smith passed his physical entering camp, has looked good on the practice field ... this seems like a non-issue.

That play was a perfect encapsulation of the career of Mark Sanchez and I'll explain why, but first check the this introduction to an article in the Star-Ledger about the play in question.

Brandon Moore didn't understand the particular fascination with this one turnover when the Jets committed five on the night.
Seriously? ?Maybe it was just because he had his back to the play, but how can he not get the fascination over the play?

With New York Jets on there bye week, Kristian Dyer writes for?CBS New York that while the Jets have been through a tumultuous first half of their season, there's more reason to hope than might seem apparent right now. ?Dyer looks at the Jets upcoming schedule and reminds us of the Jets recent close contests and how that might play out in the coming weeks.

Now the Jets have a manageable stretch of the season where they can do some potential damage and perhaps roll off some wins. Their next six opponents have a combined record of 20-27 and no one has a better record than the 5-3Patriots,?whom the Jets took to overtime on the road two weeks ago.

That?s not exactly a brutal schedule and five wins is very possible if the Jets play like the team that went toe-to-toe with the Texans on Monday night a couple weeks ago and then almost took down the Patriots at Gillette Stadium. This Jets team is better than 3-5, but can they be playoff good? It's hard for me to look much past the Seahawks. ?The Seahawks are only 4-4 but are a dominant team when they are firing on all cylinders. ?I get the feeling that they will be a tough, but maybe tone-setting game for the Jets second half. ?While Seattle's offense is ordinary this season, their defense is something special and the Jets will be playing in the highly hostile environment of Seattle. ?Their "12th man' is a real advantage.

Quick programming note, since I was hanging with La Flama Blanca last week in Myrtle Beach, Bent thought it would only be fair that he get a week's respite too. You know Bent ... he's always got to outdo me and so Bent informed me early yesterday that he would be taking a much-needed vacation in Antartica this coming week.

Seriously though, Bent is tied up with some pressing stuff this week and will try his best to get the BGA posts out, but they might be somewhat abbreviated and delayed ... so hang tight and he'll do his best!
