With a win Sunday night in Philadelphia and a Dallas loss in Seattle, the Giants can improve to 4-2 and move into a three-way tie with the Eagles and Cowboys for first place in the NFC East.

This will be the Giants' third nationally-televised game of 2014 - all road games. They lost the opener to Detroit 35-14 on Monday Night Football and defeated the Redskins 45-14 on Thursday night in Week 4.

Last night in Baltimore, the refs were welcomed back from their lockout with cheers from the M&T Bank Stadium bleachers.

In all, 18 flags were thrown. And no penalty or call was remotely close to as controversial as any of the calls from Monday night's Packers-Seahawks matchup.

Despite being embraced by NFL fans, some players aren't expected the referees to be up to the bar on their officiating just yet.

The Giants now have five players ruled out of tomorrow's game in Carolina. WR Hakeem Nicks (foot) will also not play. According to Michael Eisen of Giants.com:

"...the Giants? star wide receiver learned he must sit out tomorrow night?s game against the Carolina Panthers in his hometown of Charlotte ? hours after he was selected as the NFC Offense Player of the Week for his outstanding performance last week in the Giants? 41-34 comeback victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "
Nicks was looking forward to playing in front of friends and relatives in his home city of Charlotte, but his surgically-repaired foot has not had enough time to rebound after a rigorous go in Sunday's game.

Nicks had a busy day, catching ten passes for 199 yards. That alone could have kept him out this week, but to complicate matters the foot was also stepped on late in the game causing Nicks to hop off the field. The team doctors decided not clear him for action, overriding Nicks' desire to take the field.

Remember the old saying, " Protect your own".?? I sure do.? Maybe people have forgotten over the years what it means.?? Remember the days when players where represented by...former players?? What amazing idea!

Now that the NFLPA is represented by...a lawyer, a wizard of words and ligation you can now settle into the fact there maybe no football on the horizon. ? With the recent, and may I add laughable statement made from NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith I can only wonder if there was another choice to head up this once strong union.

Smith looks pretty transparent when he puffs out his chest and screams "our internal deadline" has come and gone all the while claiming headlines across the country.

Earlier today NY Daily News NBA columnist Mitch Lawrence made another appearance with Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts. The majority of the conversation was about the Conference Finals, but he did delve into the Knicks and his thoughts on what they may do with the #6 pick. To hear the interview go over at WFAN.com

Hearing all the talk about the conference finals makes me cringe. The last time the Lakers played the Celtics in the Finals it was 1987 and I was in the 5th grade. Does anyone remember the old Sega game Lakers vs. Celtics? Lets remember that same summer of 1987 Rick Pitino was hired to coach the Knicks and did a pretty good job the next two seasons. That Knicks team was coming off a 24 win season and no direction. Sound Familar? Mitch Lawrence does a great job as always. I may be biased because he came on my show many times, but he is one of the most accessible writers in this town. I wonder if he has finally arrived in this town now that Joe Benigno called him "bro" as they exited the interview. For what its worth Joe kept his negativity to a minimum during the segment, although his conspiracy theory about the Lakers and Celtics was classic.

Recently, I spoke to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News regarding the 2008 NFL Draft. Ralph and I discuss the Giants draft as well as some other teams.

Jared Blank, GiantsFootballBlog: What was your take on the Giants drafting S Kenny Phillips in the first round?

Ralph Vacchiano: I thought it was a great pick -- and not just because I predicted it. The truth is, we all knew they were targeting him for quite a while, and it always made a lot of sense. He was the best safety on the board and anytime you can get the best guy at one position with the 31st pick in the draft, it's a great move. Plus, when is the last time the Giants had a top safety? Gibril Wilson never really lived up to what he showed as a rookie. Before that ... Shaun Williams? He never really lived up to expectations either. Now think of what Brian Dawkins did in Philly's defense all those years. That's what Steve Spagnuolo envisions with Phillips.
