NYCFC is out of the US Open Cup after losing to the New York Cosmos for the second-straight year.
The NASL side Cosmos beat the NYCFC 1-0 on an 88th minute header from Danny Szetela.
The Cosmos advance to the Round of 16 in the US Open Cup, while NYCFC will return to MLS play for the rest of the season. The NASL team have won three out of four matches against NYCFC and the New York Red Bulls in the competition, according to the Cosmos.
NYCFC head coach Patrick Vieira was dissapointed with his team's play.
"I gave some players a chance to perform, to show me they deserve to play more and they didn't show it today," Vieira said, according to MLSSoccer.com. "That's why I'm quite really frustrated because the trust I had in them, I didn't get it back. It's difficult for me to accept."
But he also took responsibility for the loss, as he chose the starting XI.
"As a manager, I'm the one who made the selection and I am the first one to put my hand in the air and say I made a mistake when I made the decision to rest so many players," Vieira said. "I'm the first responsible for the performance of the players."
NYCFC returns to MLS play on Sunday, playing hosts to the Philadelphia Union at 1 p.m.
