Each week, I will be taking a look at the Giants? media notes to pull out some interesting facts about the upcoming opponent.

In Week 11, the Giants (3-6) host the Green Bay Packers (5-4), who lost last week to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Sunday?s game will be the 52nd regular season game between these two teams, and the Packers hold the lead with a 27-22-2 all-time mark.

Below are our latest Giants' "hot seat" candidates for the upcoming season...

DE Justin Tuck: It's a make-or-break year for Tuck (we think) as he enters the final year of his contract. He has had two subpar seasons and a third could either den him packing or into retirement. There is also the possibility of him returning at a reduced price, but what point would that serve?

WR Hakeem Nicks: With Victor Cruz most likely scoring a sizable deal, Nicks needs to stay healthy and produce big numbers if he hopes to get a matching one. If he doesn't, the Giants will dodge a bullet by signing him to a modest contract. They may also let him try the free agent market and get him back even cheaper, depending on his health.

GM Jerry Reese feels Ohio OL Eric Herman will compete for a spot on the O-Line.

After a season of watching his team get manhandled by opponents week after week, Giants CEO John Mara sent a mandate to executives on the football side to retool the trenches. On defense, they brought in three new tackles. On offense, they are bringing back all their starters from last season plus two draft picks: the top choice, Justin Pugh of Syracuse, and a seventh-round selection out of Ohio by the name of Eric Herman.

It's way too early to tell who will deliver and who will not, but the Giants may have found their new Rich Seubert in Herman. Then again, they may have another Mitch Petrus on their hands.

Now that rookie minicamp has come and gone, what have we learned, if anything?

Well, for starters, the team showed us they are still not content with the interior of the defensive line and their linebackers.

At DT, they added another veteran this week in journeyman Frank Okum which now gives them eight DTs heading into minicamp next month. Linval Joseph is currently the only DT on the roster that has played a full season for the Giants.

The discussion rages on across the internet and talk radio on whether the Giants used their first two picks in last week's draft wisely. ?We believe the team may not have taken the "best players available" according to consensus, but took the best players that fit their model.

Over the years, the Giants have made some curious selections in the early rounds. Some have worked out, others have not. Which of those categories will the this year's top two selections (OL Justin Pugh and DL Jonathan Hankins) fall under?

For the second consecutive year, the draft has come and gone and Giant fans protest loudly about the team's failure to draft a linebacker. ?I understand the mindset behind this angst. But I'm not sure most fans understand how the game has changed and why base defense, run-stopping linebackers - much like running backs these days - are not being taken high in the draft any longer.

Today's game is played in front of ?- and behind - the linebackers. The Giants have been getting away from their base defense (4-3-4) in recent years, employing either a nickel (4-2-5) or a dime (4-1-6) package on approximately 50% of the defensive snaps. This is primarily to guard against the new age passing attacks of the league. In the team's final game of the season vs the Eagles last year, only two LBs were on the field for more than half the snaps: Chase Blackburn (73%) and Jacquian Williams (71%) - who happen to be the unit's top two pass defenders.

Granted, the game was a blowout, with the Eagles in passing mode most of the game (37 pass to 27 run plays), but that means little. When the shoe was on the other foot in Week 10 against Cincinnati, only Michael Boley (100%) and Blackburn (92%) played more than half the snaps.

"A lot of versatility. One of my goals every year is just coming in and improving my run game. I faced criticism my whole career in if I can play the run or I can hold up. I always just thought I got a chip on my shoulder or something to prove.

I?ve been on some pretty good run defenses in my time in the league. I think I?ve even been on a number one ranked defense back in the day. It?s just something to prove being able to play whether it?s inside or outside. Help out wherever. It?s a system that I?m familiar with, with Coach Nunn and some of the things we used to do back at Green Bay. I?m just excited to get out there and be able to contribute."

Outside of their required home-and-home contests vs their divisional opponents (Cowboys, Eagles, Redskins), the Giants will face the NFC North (Bears, Lions, Vikings, Packers) and the AFC West (Broncos, Chiefs, Chargers, Raiders).

By virtue of their second-place finish in 2012, the Giants drew the other NFC second-place finishers from last season (Seahawks, Panthers).

The quarterback hopes he will be doing the same this offseason with Cruz at the Giants' practice facility when the team trains.

"I hope so," Manning said when asked by ESPN's Chris Mortensen at the Manning Passing Academy at Duke University. "I know he wants everything to get finished and be with the Giants and get back to work. It was great to get him here for a few days and I haven't seen these guys in a while."Also working out with Eli are Hakeem Nicks, who is coming off foot and knee injuries, and newly-signed free agent Louis Murphy. It's a good sign, folks. Cruz has only a little over a week left to field offers from other teams before his rights revert back to the Giants. Nicks being able to do anything at this point on the field is good news as well.

It's draft season and we thought we'd rehash some of the fond memories from my 47 years as a fan of the New York Football Giants. Every other day, from now until the draft, we will cover the Giants' draft history from 1970 to today. Hope you enjoy and please comment with your memories and perceptions as well.

The Giants' media guys describe the 1970's as such: The Giants in the 1970s could best be described as a team in transition. The team called four different stadiums home, played in three different states, and did not play in one postseason game. Teams like the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, and Giants, so strong in the NFL?s forma- tive years, gave way to new powers like Dallas, Pittsburgh and Minnesota.

Perfect. Not too specific, kindly saving us the pain of having to re-live that period. The beginning of the decade was spotted with a few winning seasons, but as the decade went on, the Giants became a hopeless mess that prompted NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle to intervene in 1979.

The Giants signed DT Mike Patterson to an undisclosed deal yesterday. The move helps to solidify the team's challenged interior defensive line. Last month, they signed Patterson's former Philadelphia teammate, Cullen Jenkins to a three-year, $8 million contract.

Patterson,29, was the Eagles' first round pick (31st overall) in the 2005 NFL Draft out of USC, where he was a first-team All-American. He played in 115 games over his eight years years in Philadelphia, starting 99. Patterson played in only 5 games last season after undergoing brain surgery in the offseason after he was diagnosed with?cerebral arteriovenous malformation. ?Patterson has never been named to the Pro Bowl and was the recipient of the Eagles' Ed Block Courage Award in 2011.

The Giants are expected to take a look at WR/KR Julian Edelman today. Edelman is a free agent with few prospects after the Patriots replaced Wes Welker with former Rams slot receiver Danny Amendola instead of promoting him.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, former Giant WR Steve Smith has signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

For Smith, the move will mark a reunion with former?New York Giants?wide receivers coach Mike Sullivan, who is now the offensive coordinator in Tampa Bay. Smith was one of the best slot receivers in football at the time, but hasn't been the same player since recovering from microfracture surgery.

Smith set a Giant single-season record for receptions in 2009 with 107. His season was cut short by injury in 2010 and he spurned the Giants the following summer by signing with the hated Eagles, where he only caught 11 passes. He moved on to St. Louis last season where he played a bit role once again.

As part of his visit to the Giants, Patterson will undergo a physical, according to a source familiar with his plans. That?s a key part of the evaluation process since Patterson?s career nearly ended in the summer of 2011 when he suffered a seizure during training camp. Though he ended up playing 15 games that season, with the help of medication, he eventually needed surgery to remove an arteriovenous malformation from his brain in January, 2012.
At the owners meetings last month, CEO John Mara said the team needed to play more physical up front:

The below five-round mock is from one of my favorite websites: WalterFootball.com. I will tell you this, if the Giants walk out of their draft room with these five players in tow, I'll run naked down 6th Avenue......

Round One (19): Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State:?Smart teams like the Giants, Steelers and Ravens always end up getting a prospect who falls during the draft. Teams constantly selecting in the top 15 are stupid, so intelligent front offices take advantage of their dumb decisions on Draft Day. One player who's probably going to drop is Bjoern Werner. For those who believe the Giants are not bargaining behind the scenes with RFA Victor Cruz, a report has surfaced that the team has a fairly generous offer on the table. By all accounts, things are looking good.....

From Gary Myers of the Daily News:

Sources say the Giants? offer to Cruz exceeds $7 million per year, with a sizable amount of guaranteed money in a long-term deal that would still leave the 26-year-old Cruz time in his career to sign another contract. Switching to agent Tom Condon, who is a deal maker with a good relationship with the Giants, should mean they get a contract done rather than Cruz playing for the $2.879 million tender.

At the moment, it doesn?t appear Cruz is going to get an offer sheet from another team. Condon is Eli Manning?s agent and holds an important place in Giants history. In the days before the 2004 draft, he broke the news to the Chargers that Archie Manning said Eli would not play for them, which forced the draft day trade to the Giants.

Victor Cruz. We all love him. Eli Manning said yesterday that he would restructure his deal to help the Giants keep him. But business is business. Cruz can put his name on an offer sheet from now until April 19th. If that happens, the Giants will have five days to match or lose him to another team.

Of course they will receive that team's first round draft pick in next month's NFL Draft. With that pick, they can get themselves a much-needed LB, OL, CB or even another receiver. If Cruz receives no offers, he will stay with the Giants for at least another year. The best case scenario, however, is getting Cruz' signature on a long-term deal.

The Giants have a healthy Hakeem Nicks returning, along with Rueben Randle and recently-signed speedster Louis Murphy. Keeping Cruz in the fold would make that an even more imposing unit.
