Oregon State?has chosen?Montana head coach Wayne Tinkle as its new head coach,?The Oregonian reported on Sunday.

The paper previously reported that?Oregon State athletic director Bob De Carolis told players?he plans to name a new coach Monday morning.

Tinkle went 158-91 at his alma mater, guiding the Grizzlies to three of the last five NCAA Tournaments. Oregon State hasn't been to the Big Dance since 1990.

Former UCLA coach Ben Howland is a "a very serious candidate" to replace Craig Robinson at Oregon State, a source close to the situation told SNY.tv.

Howland, 56, led UCLA to three consecutive Final Fours from 2006-8 but was let go following the 2012-13 season.

He was in the mix for the openings at Marquette, Tennessee and Missouri, but did not land any of those jobs.

The 6-foot-3, 175-pound St. Anthony shooting guard pulled the trigger Monday, choosing the Beavers over St. Joe's, Richmond and Xavier.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Jared Cunningham committed to Arizona State as a sophomore out of San Leandro (Calif.) High School.

But Cunningham said the school opted to go in a different direction during signing period of his senior year, leaving him free and clear to go somewhere else.

"I think they got somebody at my position," Cunningham told SNY.tv Monday at the Izod Center. "I really never got the answer really what happened. We just decided to part ways."

Big East schools?St. John?s, Seton Hall and Providence were in the final mix for the 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward from The Bronx who finished his high school career playing for Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley at St. Anthony.

But Collier visited Oregon State several times, met with head coach Craig Robinson and decided that was the place for him because it felt like a "second family."

Yes, the same Oregon State team that finished 10-19 a year ago and was 42-57 through head coach Craig Robinson's first three years on campus.

Yet the Beavers may have scored the biggest victory of Robinson's tenure Saturday night when junior guard Jared Cunningham went for a career-high 37 points despite a split lip over the final minute as the Beavers beat perennial powerhouse Texas, 100-95 in OT, in the Legends Classic at the Izod Center.

Two of New Jersey's top 2011 recruits will hit the road on official visits this weekend when guard Elijah Carter trips to Oregon State and forward Desmond Hubert heads to Maryland.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Carter, a former St. Bonaventure commit, says his top five consists of Seton Hall, Cincinnati, Oregon State, Charlotte and Clemson.

West Virginia picked up a verbal commitment Tuesday from Tommie McCune, a 6-foot-7 power forward from Saginaw, Mich.

McCune, ranked No. 29 at his position in the Class of 2011 by Rivals, committed after an unofficial visit to Morgantown Tuesday.

Of all the basketball players at this weekend's Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass., Devon Collier may be the only who has met President Barack Obama.

The 6-foot-8 Collier, a senior forward at Jersey City (N.J.) St. Anthony, signed to play at Oregon State, which is coached by Craig Robinson, the President's brother-in-law.

He attended a Nov. 28 game in Washington, D.C. in which Oregon State beat George Mason and featured President Obama and his family watching from courtside in the half-full Smith Center.

NEWARK -- Seton Hall had three of the top juniors in the New York metropolitan area on hand Saturday when it beat Cincinnati, 83-76, for its first Big East win of the season.

Sterling Gibbs, a point guard out of Seton Hall Prep pictured at left, Myles Mack of Paterson (N.J.) Catholic and Tyler Harris of Half Hollow (N.Y.) Hills West were all behind the Pirates bench at the Prudential Center.

"It was a good game," Mack said. "Seton Hall pulled it out. I love the atmosphere but when the student body gets back it's going to be better."

No. 2 seed New Heights and the No. 1 New York Panthers will play for the is8 championship on Sunday in Queens after both teams won their semifinal games Saturday.

JayVaughn Pinkston poured in a game-high 30 points on 12-of-21 shooting and added seven rebounds, and Devon Collier added 27 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks to lead New Heights to an 84-80 victory over St. Benedict's Prep.

"It's great," New Heights coach Kimani Young said. "is8 is one of the premier tournaments on the East Coast. To be right there at the end, the last two out of 70 teams, it's a great accomplishment."
