Osi Umenyiora held a press conference this afternoon as he signed a one-day contract to retire as a member of the New York Giants. Here is what we learned from Osi:

  • He received an offer from an unknown team as recently as yesterday?but "either I was going to play for the Giants or I wasn?t going to play football at all," he said.

Former Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora reportedly visited the Jets Wednesday (Garafolo, March 21).

Umenyiora, 33, spent the last two seasons with the Falcons after signing a two-year, $11 million deal with them in 2013. He played 16 games each year, with 7.5 sacks in 2013 and 2.5 last season. Umenyiora won two Super Bowl titles with the Giants, recording 79 sacks in nine seasons.

Last month, Umenyiora said he wanted to retire as a Giant.

Falcons' DE Osi Umneyiora, the former two-time All-Pro and two-time Super Bowl champ with the Giants, is returning to MetLife Stadium this week to face his old team for the first time since his departure via free agency in 2013.

He returns as a part-time player, recording just six tackles in the first four games with no sacks to his credit thus far. Last season, Osi had a respectable 7.5 sacks in his first year with Atlanta.

?I am really just in on third downs, I am a pass (rush) specialist,? Osi said on a conference call Wednesday. ?In New York, I played all downs and we were part of a rotation over there. That is the main difference. I don?t have any complaints. Whatever they tell me to do is what I am going to do. Do I feel like I can be helping more? Yes, but I don?t have any control over that. So whatever they ask me to do, I am just going to go out there and do.?

It is only speculation that Mathias Kiwanuka will play along the Giants defensive line, according to Giants.com, though general manager Jerry Reese did hint at the move prior to the NFL Draft last month.

"He will probably play more on the defensive line" this year," the GM said.

With the shakeup along the defensive line this off-season -- losing Osi Umenyiora to the Falcons -- Kiwanuka can serve as another pass rusher to complement Jason Pierre-Paul and Justin Tuck, who will line up at numerous positions up front.

The Atlanta Falcons signed DE Osi Umenyiora to a two-year contract reportedly worth up to $12.5 million......

From Rotoworld: ...Finally. This has been in the works for almost a week now, and it was just a matter of time before it was made official. The Dolphins were rumored to be sniffing around Umenyiora a little bit, but it never materialized to anything. Umenyiora, 31, brings some much needed juice to Atlanta's pass rush, but he essentially just replaces John Abraham. GM Thomas Dimitroff still needs to be on the lookout for more edge rushers. At this point, Umenyiora and Kroy Biermann are the starters at defensive end for the Falcons. Osi recorded 43 tackles and six sacks last season.

Osi Umenyiora said on Atlanta radio show that he wants to play for the Falcons. As per D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

Osi expressed his desire to play for the Falcons on the Jamie and Jerome Show on 92.9 The Game on Friday. Co-Hosts Jamie Dukes and former Falcons Chuck Smith, who was subbing for Jerome Jurenovich, interviewed Umenyiora:

?New York fans definitely expect a lot out of you because of their history,? Umenyiora said. ?There was nothing better than to be able to win there. The only thing I can think of that would be better than being able to win in New York would be to be able to win here in Atlanta. We?ll see how that plays out. Hopefully, it works out in a positive direction.?

It would be a fresh start for the 31-year-old pass specialist. The Falcons appear interested, but the price would have to right. Osi is said to be seeking in the upwards of $5 million per season. He might have wait and see how the free agent DE market shakes out first for Elvis Dumervil, Dwight Freeney and John Abraham before he learns his true market value.

In a pair of ESPN mock NFL drafts, analysts Todd McShay and Mel Kiper Jr. both expect the New York Giants to try and improve on the defensive side of the ball this spring.

According to McShay, New York will look to bolster its defensive backfield by adding Mississippi State cornerback Johnthan Banks.

"The Giants have been successful under general manager Jerry Reese going with the best available athlete on the board, but in this case they find one of the top players available at a priority need area," McShay writes. "Banks is not elite in man-to-man coverage, but he has good length and is solid in press coverage, shows instincts in zone, supports the run and is a ball hawk with 16 career interceptions."
The last defensive player drafted by New York was Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara in 2011. In 2010, the team took Jason Pierre-Paul.

This season, the Giants lacked their signature pass rush, which had lifted them over the Patriots in Super Bowls twice and had set the tone for the rest of their defense.

In December, Osi Umenyiora admitted he probably won't be a New York Giant in 2013. Now that the new year has arrived, "probably" has turned into "more likely than not."
"I feel fortunate to be able to play 10 years in New York," Umenyiora said on "The Michael Kay Show."?"It was a great run. I think now is probably the time to move on. There's really not much left for me to accomplish here in New York. Look at things that have been done here, what is there that is to be done that I haven't done? We won a championship twice. I think I've been a?Pro Bowl?player. Everything has pretty much gone better than I could have imagined in New York."

"So if there is a time to leave, it probably would be now, but there is no telling what would happen."

We all know that on paper, the Giants have one of the best if the not the best defensive line in football. Every year, it seems the team develops another super-athletic defensive end to add to the mix.

Giants' DE Osi Umenyiora is not blind. Like the rest of us, he sees the rise in arrests of NFL players and can't for the life of him understand the spike - especially in the day-and-age of Roger Goodell, who deals with such infractions both swiftly and harshly.

"It?s just ridiculous,? Umenyiora said at an event in midtown today as per Art Stapleton of the Record. ?People need to be more focused and more grateful for what it is that they have. Coming from where I came from [during his trip to Nigeria earlier this month] and seeing what I saw, all that poverty, people who have nothing, they would cut off both their legs to be given the opportunity that these people have. To be messing around like that is real unfortunate.?

Being one year older than the Mets and having grown up in Flushing, I find myself still stunned by the Mets' first no-hitter in their fifty-one year existence. Don't know why, but I never thought I'd see this happen. Buuuut....the Mets never cease to amaze, always providing their fans with something they've never seen before and this no-no could not have come at a better time in team history.

Congratulations to good guy Johan Santana and Met fans everywhere who have painfully suffered through a half-century of close calls. Our man Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog and the SNY team have great coverage of the historic event, so click on over.
