THE GAME

The Jets (5-10) against the New England Patriots (12-3) at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Sunday, Dec. 31, at 1 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER

Miserable. … OK, it's only miserable if you hate the cold, I guess. The high temperature is expected to be 14 degrees with winds of 10-15 mph. Plus, if you go, you get to deal with miles and miles of traffic on I-95 on the way home, on New Year's Eve no less. Yay?

WHAT IT MEANS

Nothing for the Jets, unless Christian Hackenberg enters, in which case I promise I'm paying attention. I suppose it could mean something for Todd Bowles' future, but really if they haven't made up their minds by now, what are they doing? As for the Patriots, they're still fighting for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, and it's highly doubtful they're going to let the Jets stand in their way.

The Jets' defense hopes to regroup for Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons after New York lost back-to-back games against divisional opponents.

New York blew a two-touchdown lead in the fourth quarter by giving up 17 unanswered points in Sunday's 31-28 loss to the Miami Dolphins to fall to 3-4, but the defense is confident it can go back to the team that had allowed 13.3 points per game during its three-game winning streak.

"We win together. We lose together," defensive end Leonard Williams said, according to NJ.com's Connor Hughes. "The No. 1 thing we have to do is stick together and be a family. That's the one thing I can say: This team is a family."

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Jets sometimes seem like they've cornered the market on finding interesting new ways to lose. Five years ago, it was the infamous "Butt fumble." This time, it was a fumble that maybe, probably, never was.

But the differences between those two plays are as stark as the differences between those two teams. The "Butt fumble" was an embarrassment on Thanksgiving 2012 that turned Mark Sanchez and the Jets into a national joke. The fumble by Austin Seferian-Jenkins on Sunday -- the "What fumble," as some have named it -- wasn't funny to anyone.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- When tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins rolled into the end zone midway through the fourth quarter and the official's arms went up, the Jets were just like everyone else in the building and watching on TV: They were sure they had just scored a touchdown.

And long after their 24-17 loss to the New England Patriots, they were still shocked, confused and absolutely livid that the touchdown was overturned.

Doug Williams, Marc Malusis and Sal Licata discuss the Jets' position in the standings, tied with the reigning Super Bowl Champion Patriots.

The Jets have an opportunity to claim sole possession of first place in the AFC East on Sunday, and to do that they'll need to beat the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.

And though the Patriots, which entered the season with the belief they could run the table and go undefeated, share a 3-2 record with the Jets (and Buffalo Bills), Jets head coach Todd Bowles said he knows what his team will be up against despite New England's slow start.

"They are still the same Patriots," Bowles said on Monday. "You have to knock them off the ladder. They are kings of the division right now, they won the Super Bowl. We have to come out and work on us and play hard and go into the game and try and compete and win."

While there was outside talk that the New York Jets were going to tank the 2017 season, the players aren't surprised after Sunday's 17-14 win over the Cleveland Browns at FirstEnergy Stadium gave them a three-game winning streak and put them in a three-way tie for first place in the AFC East.

"Sounds like that's how it's supposed to be," cornerback Morris Claiborne, who had one of New York's two interceptions, said, according to Newsday's Calvin Watkins.

New York, which lost the first two games of the season by a combined score of 66-32, has won three games in a row for the first time since winning five in a row from Week 12 to Week 16 in 2015.

Combined with the New England Patriots' win on Thursday and the Buffalo Bills' 20-16 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, the Jets are in a three-way tie for the division lead heading into their Week 6 matchup against the defending Super Bowl champions.

Former Jets and current Patriots linebacker David Harris said he felt "blindsided" after New York released him in early June when the two sides failed to agree to a pay cut.

"They kind of blindsided me with the whole thing, being so late in the offseason, a week before minicamp," Harris said on SiriusXM NFL Radio, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss. "It came out of left field. It was more about the disrespect of the whole situation than anything else."

Harris had been a Jet for 10 years ever since they drafted him in the second round in 2007. He played 154 games and recorded 1,088 combined tackles, 35.5 sacks, 11 forced fumbles and six interceptions, helping lead the team to two AFC Championship games in his tenure.

But the Jets "abruptly" released the 33-year-old Harris in June when there was a "breakdown" in talks about reducing his $6.5 million salary that was due this season.

THE WEATHER: Rain and apparently lots of it, plus temperatures in the mid-40s. It could be worse -- a little colder and it would be a blizzard.

WHAT IT MEANS: Well, it's a big one for Bryce Petty, I guess. And for any Jets fans not interested in draft position, it would probably be a nice almost-ending to a miserable season to beat the Patriots. Other than that, I've got nothing.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Tom Brady missed practice for the Patriots with a knee injury on Wednesday, and all of New England is now waiting to exhale. But there's no reason for Jets fans to bother holding their breath. The Jets, as you all know, just aren't lucky enough for Brady to miss this game.

As far as the Jets are concerned, though, that's just fine. At this point, they'd rather see Brady in the lineup. Because if they're going to pull off this meaningless upset just so they can feel a little better about themselves in their lost season, they may as well do it with the Patriots at full strength.

The outrage was bound to happen anyway, but it really got loud Tuesday afternoon when word leaked out of the trade between the New England Patriots and the Cleveland Browns. After all, if the Browns can land an emerging young linebacker like Jamie Collins for the low, low price of a third- or fourth-round pick, why can't the Giants do something like that? Or even better: Why can't the Giants do anything at all? The answer is that of course they could have made a trade of some sort before the deadline on Tuesday, and there were very likely a few opportunities they could have pursued. But they were absolutely right to pass them all up and stick with the roster they have.

This has always been the fear about Ryan Fitzpatrick: As good as he has often looked as the Jets quarterback, the bad is just around the corner. He's a 33-year-old journeyman who is on his sixth team in 12 seasons, and has never once been considered anywhere near an elite quarterback.

On Sunday, the Jets were reminded why.

With a four-game suspension for his role in the "Deflategate" scandal beginning in just a few days, Tom Brady had an NFL going-away party Thursday night, playing the first half in the New England Patriots' preseason finale against the New York Giants.

Brady completed 16 of 26 passes for 166 yards, a touchdown and an interception as the Patriots (3-1) missed out a perfect preseason in a 17-9 loss to the Giants (2-2).

Brady showed flashes in his second preseason game of the season. He completed five passes between 16 and 38 yards, but only one drive resulted in a score, a 7-yard TD toss to Keshawn Martin. Two others, including one in the red zone, were ended by lost fumbles. His sixth and final series was a knee at the half.

After New England Patriots QB Tom Brady had his appeal for his four-game suspension relating to Deflategate rejected, one New York Jets player believes they can take advantage.

"With Tom gone those first four games, they could go 2-2 or even 1-3," an anonymous Jets player told Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman. "It's a good opportunity for us."

Brady is set to miss New England's first four games of the season against the Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills, and would return Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns. The Jets host the Patriots in Week 12 and face them on the road in Week 16.

Is Deflategate finally over? 00:03:22
The Daily News Live panel reacts to the news that Tom Brady's Deflategate suspension is being upheld by the U.S. Court of Appeals.

A federal appeals court has rejected Tom Brady's attempt to get a new hearing on his suspension.

Brady was asking for the full 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to hear the case. In April, a three-judge panel said that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was within his powers when he suspended the star quarterback four games for his role in a scheme to doctor the footballs used in a Jan. 18, 2015, playoff game.

The decision Wednesday affirms the wide-ranging powers given to the commissioner by the NFL's collective bargaining agreement and was a setback for organized labor groups arguing for due process in employee discipline.

Brady's remaining hope is to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. >> Read more...

Let's just reflect again on what happened yesterday: The Jets beat the Patriots to win their fifth game in a row. Sure, Patriots fans might point to injuries as an excuse as to why they lost, but let's not forget that the Jets almost beat them earlier in the season without several of their offensive contributors from yesterday. It was a triumphant win for the Jets.

New England, who as recently as a month ago had designs on a perfect season has lost three of five. The Jets, on the other hand, are peaking at the perfect time as they have won five in a row. Back in 2009, the Jets - with a new head coach - won five of their last six to sneak into the postseason and carried that momentum into the playoffs, winning their next two on the road to reach the AFC title game. If they can win next week, is there any hope they could emulate or even surpass that?

Next week comes first though and is by no means an automatic. The Jets already lost at home to the Bills this year and you know Rex Ryan will be motivated to play spoiler. It doesn't look like the Bills have totally quit on the season, as they just beat the Cowboys - a team the Jets only beat in the last minute two weeks ago - by 10.

The Jets are expected to pursue CB Darrelle Revis should he become a free agent (Schefter, Feb. 1).
