Carl Hagelin told the Norwegian press last night that his game winning goal that put the Rangers in the second round was for Mats Zuccarello who was injured earlier in the game. (VG) (Nettavisen)

Hagelin said that he and Derick Brassard were talking about how they felt bad Zuccarello couldn't be there at the end and that the game winning goal was for him. He said that he hopes to see Zuccarello in the next game. (VG) (Nettavisen)

Zuccarello took a puck to the side of the head in the first period and did not return. Alain Vigneault didn't have much of an update after the game.

After two periods the Rangers had 19 shots on goal and 37 shot attempts while the Penguins had 11 shots on goal and 25 shot attempts. (Hockey Stats)

In the third period though the Penguins out-shot the Rangers 13-7 and out attempted them 30 to 10.

The Penguins had 8 shots attempts in the last 5:30 or so and 15 in the last 10 minutes while trapping the Rangers in their zone for most of the time. (Hockey Stats)

Derick Brassard said that the guys on the bench notice the effort from the Rangers fourth line and last night they were strong on the forecheck, threw their bodies around and provided momentum.

  • Tanner Glass had 6 hits in 9:38 and when he was on the ice against Sidney Crosby, the Rangers had four shot attempts to the Penguins one. (Natural Stat Trick)
  • Jesper Fast played 12:12 and had three hits
  • Dominic Moore played 16:01, had two hits and had five shifts in the final 10 minutes.

Brassard added that the fourth line "did a good job tonight."

In speaking with John Giannone on the bench before the game, Derick Brassard said that the Rangers needed to show more "will" in game three and perform better than they did in game two.

After the game, Brassard told Giannone that the Rangers played their "A" game which is something that they talked about before the game. He said that the Rangers played last night like they did the whole season, competed hard, outplayed the Penguins, blocked shots and put fort ha "real solid effort."

Alain Vigneault said that the Rangers had a good compete level in the first two periods. He told Sam Rosen before the game that compete level is not something that he feels he needs to address with his players at this time of year.

Eddie Olczyk was on the radio with Michael Kay and Don La Greca this afternoon and said that while he still considers the Rangers the team to beat, the pressure is on and they need to play better.

Eddie said that the Rangers have not played up to the level they showed they could in the regular season, besides the first period of game one, and that the Penguins have "out-defended" the Rangers so far.

He said that he isn't panicking when it comes to the Rangers power play and that he thought they had the right idea on Saturday but lacked in execution.

Following the Rangers win over the Penguins on Thursday, Alain Vigneault said "whistle to whistle" four times in reference to some of the tactics that Pittsburgh were trying to employ.

 

Vigneault said that the Penguins are trying to get under the Rangers skin and "get some stuff going" after a play but the Rangers won't get involved.

Vigneault said, "they have a good team, Letang on defense isn't there. He is their QB. That team has four lines, a veteran defense that is battle tested and paid their dues. Forget about Crosby who is the best player in the world and Malkin who isn't far behind, their goalie has won a Cup. We want to game seven last year. It was a hard fought battle and it will be the same thing this year. "
