Former Rangers coach Alain Vigneault is back in the NHL, and his old team is going to be seeing plenty of him.

Vigneault was named the new coach of the Flyers on Monday after sitting out the 2018-19 season. It was Philadelphia where Vigneault coached his final game with the Blueshirts last season, getting fired by Jeff Gorton just hours after the season finale when the team returned to New York.

"It is an honor to be selected as the next head coach of the Flyers," Vigneault said in a release. "The history they have established and the passionate fan base has made this a first-class franchise. I am excited to work with Chuck (Fletcher,) the talented group of players and prospects coming up through the system, in order to return Philadelphia to the top of the NHL landscape."

The Islanders are coming off a couple of ugly wins in consecutive victories over the NHL's cellar-dwelling Ottawa Senators but aren't apologizing for it. After all, the Islanders needed those wins to keep in the fight for top spot in the Metropolitan Division, the latest a 4-2 decision in Ottawa on Thursday night.

"We got two points and have to move on," head coach Barry Trotz said after his team's victory. "You have to look at the big picture. We've had some guys out, we've had all that, but when it's mattered, we've found ways to win."

Added Anthony Beauvillier, who scored the game-winning goal in Thursday's clash.

A sluggish Islanders offense plagued the team once again, as the Flyers scored two goals in each of the first two periods Sunday to hand the Isles a 4-1 loss at Nassau Coliseum. The loss was the Isles' third in four games and keeps them two points behind the Metropolitan Division-leading Capitals, who picked up a point with an overtime win over the Rangers.

Four different Flyers found the back of the net and Claude Giroux accumulated two assists. Adam Pelech converted an opportunity to get the Islanders on the board late in the third period, but by thenthe game was out of reach. >> Box score

The New York Rangers need every win they can get in order to get back into playoff contention and Tuesday's loss to the Flyers didn't help.

If the Giants indeed move on from Eli Manning, they could turn to free agency to find their next quarterback and Nick Foles appears to be headed toward the open market.

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson made a pretty strong statement on Tuesday about where the team stands on its quarterback dilemma between sticking with 26-year-old Carson Wentz or last year's Super Bowl MVP.

The arrow appeared to be pointing upward last season for the Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils after they each reached the playoffs. But the only race the Flyers and Devils are involved in this season is the one headed for the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

The Flyers and Devils will each look to avoid falling into the Eastern Conference basement Saturday afternoon, when they face each other at Prudential Center.

The player responsible for Odell Beckham Jr.'s bruised quad is now facing repercussions.

Eagles LB Kamu Grugier-Hill was fined $20,054 for his leg-whip hit on Beckham in Week 12, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

On the final play of the game, Beckham had the ball lateraled to him but was taken down by Grugier-Hill swinging his leg into Beckham's quad from the ground.

PHILADELPHIA -- Pat Shurmur did a marvelous job of holding the Giants together through their 1-7 start, even getting them to play hard and fight in a longshot bid to make the playoffs. His locker room didn't fracture. His players mostly refrained from pointing fingers.

But it may not be so easy for Shurmur to hold everything together after Sunday's 25-22 loss to the Eagles. Because in the unhappy locker room afterward, there seemed to be a few fingers pointed right at him.

Not only do the Giants have some momentum with a little two-game winning streak, but they also have a fairly healthy roster heading into Week 12 vs. the Eagles.

Only DE Kerry Wynn was listed on the team's injury report this week and he is out with a concussion.

The rest of the team is healthy, which should bode well as they head into a road matchup against their NFC East rivals and a chance to climb back into the division race.

The sizzling New York Rangers steam into Philadelphia to renew their long and often bitter rivalry with the Flyers on Friday.

The Rangers, who are supposed to be in a rebuild, have won three straight and are 9-1-1 in their last 11 games. They have outscored the opposition 11-3 in the three games, beating the New York Islanders 5-0 Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

That win ended an eight-game losing streak against the Islanders, pulled the Rangers (12-8-2) into a tie for first place in the Metropolitan Division.

If the Giants had any thoughts about starting rookie Davis Webb on Christmas Eve in Arizona, they definitely don't have any now.

Eli Manning slammed that door shut with an impressive performance against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, and interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo reiterated Monday that the team has no plans to change their depth chart.

Manning completed 37 of 57 passes for 434 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. It could've been more if his receivers didn't have their usual problem with drops...

Giants tight end Evan Engram said he believed he was interfered with and held on New York's last gasp in Sunday's 34-29 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium.

"It was really obvious there should've been a flag," Engram said, according to NJ.com's Ryan Dunleavy. "Those guys played their hearts out and they are really emotional. We felt like we should've got that call."

On fourth-and-goal from the Philadelphia 6-yard line with 48 seconds remaining, Eli Manning's pass intended for a leaping Engram sailed out of the end zone, however Engram contended that Eagles safety Corey Graham interfered with him in single coverage.

"My arm was kind of held," Engram said. "It was obvious that he kind of arm-barred me. I thought it was definitely defensive pass interference. Fourth down. It was really obvious, but no call."

PHILADELPHIA -- Olivier Vernon is the son of a retired police officer who served for 25 years. He's a child of immigrants, with a father who came from Jamaica and a mother who hailed from Switzerland. He has watched the racial problems he sees in this country for a while, and listened closely to the words of a man he insisted "ain't my president."

Sometime on Saturday, though, the Giants defensive end decided he had enough.

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored two late goals and the New York Red Bulls beat the Philadelphia Union 2-0 on Sunday.

Wright-Phillips put a sliding one-touch, off a cross from Kemar Lawrence, into the net from a step inside the 6-yard box in the 87th minute to give the Red Bulls (7-7-2) a 1-0 lead. It was New York's first road goal since Wright-Phillips scored in the 13th minute of a 4-1 loss at Houston on April 1, snapping a drought of more than 520 minutes. He added his eighth of the season in the second minute of stoppage time.

Philadelphia (4-7-4) played a man down after Derrick Jones was given a straight red card for a foul on Felipe Martins in the 53rd minute.

While these are joyous times for the New York Islanders, these are frustrating circumstances for the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Islanders attempt to get their season-high fourth straight victory while the Flyers look to stop a nine-game road losing streak Sunday night when the Metropolitan Division rivals meet at Barclays Center.

New York put together three straight wins for the third time this season. Their first two attempts to get a fourth consecutive victory have not gone well as the Islanders were handed a 4-3 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Dec. 4 and a 6-4 drubbing at Minnesota on Dec. 29.

The Eagles have denied the Jets' request to interview QB coach John DeFilippo for their offensive coordinator vacancy, reports Adam Schefter of ESPN.

DeFilippo finished his first season as Eagles QB coach following one year as the Browns' offensive coordinator and three years as the Raiders' QB coach.

DeFilippo worked with rookie quarterback Carson Wentz in 2016, as the former No. 2 pick threw for 3,782 yards (most among rookies), 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions (tied for ninth in the league).

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY.TV:

PHILADELPHIA -- Odell Beckham Jr. has spent all season battling the officials, so he certainly wasn't surprised by what he saw on Thursday. Once again, there were a series of inexplicable penalty calls and non-calls, and the Giants were pretty sure it all went against them.

"We know what it is over here," Beckham said after the Giants' 24-19 loss to the Eagles. "We know what it's always going to be. We're not looking for any calls. We've just got to play through it. That's the bottom line."

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY.TV:

PHILADELPHIA -- There were several common threads between the New York Giants' last two Super Bowl runs, but one of the most important ones was this: Eli Manning, in 2007 and 2011, played brilliantly when it mattered the most.

And that is absolutely not happening now.

There are reasons why, and it's not all Manning's fault, but that doesn't really matter as the Giants head (they hope) for their first playoff berth in five seasons. Manning, as the Giants' franchise quarterback, needs to find a way to rise above his team's problems and carry them on his shoulders, and he hasn't figured out how to do that with this team yet.

The Devils (12-13-7) battle against the Flyers (20-11-4) in Newark on Thursday.

According to STATS:

  • Philadelphia beat Washington, 3-2, in a shootout last night, snapping a two-game losing streak, and improving to 11-1-1 in its last 13 tilts overall. The Flyers are 20-11-4 in 2016-17 -- it took them 43 games to garner win No. 20 last season (did so on January 17).
  • The Devils were shellacked, 5-1, at home by the Predators on Tuesday night, and have now dropped seven straight games overall (0-6-1 record). New Jersey has allowed at least five goals five times in its last 13 contests -- tied with Anaheim for most of any NHL club since Thanksgiving.
  • Tonight marks the first of five meetings between the Flyers and Devils in 2016-17. The road team won each of the four tilts in the 2015-16 season series.
  • Claude Giroux lit the lamp unassisted last night, snapping his five-game goalless streak, and giving him 10 markers on the season. Giroux has six points (1g, 5a) during his current three-game scoring streak vs. the Devils.
  • Andy Greene and Damon Severson both assisted on Sergey Kalinin's first goal of the season Tuesday night. New Jersey has gotten just 36 helpers from its blueliners this season -- second fewest of any NHL club.
  • The Flyers are 6-1-1 (.813) in the second of back-to-back games this season -- second best in the league. The Devils are 3-2-2 when facing teams in the second of back-to-backs in 2016-17.

When the 2016-17 NHL season started, it was expected that the Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils would find themselves battling one another for playoff positioning within the competitive Metropolitan Division.

Nearly three months into the season, though, the Flyers (20-11-4) are on much more solid ground than the Devils (12-13-7), due in large part to recent streaks that have taken the teams in opposite directions.

Philadelphia won ten games in a row from Nov. 27 through Dec. 14, a run which catapulted the Flyers into a comfortable Wild Card position after an uneven 9-10-3 start to the season.

The Giants' 21-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals Monday night completed a clean sweep for the NFC East this weekend. All four teams won close ballgames to keep the order in the division for at least another week. The NFC East is the only one of the NFL's eight divisions where all four clubs have winning records.

First place Dallas (8-1, 2-1 in the division) won their eighth straight game, a thrilling 35-30 victory over the Steelers in Pittsburgh. Rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 114 yards with two touchdowns, including the game-winning 32-yard score with nine seconds remaining and had 95 receiving yards with a touchdown.

Giants QB Eli Manning was very productive in New York's 28-23 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, going 22-for-36 for 257 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.

While the two interceptions put a damper on the quarterback's stats, neither were necessarily Manning's fault. The first interception came when Nolan Carroll ripped the ball out of Odell Beckham Jr.'s hands on the way to the ground, a call that appeared to be very close and was reviewed by the officials, but not overturned. The second interception occurred in the game's final two minutes, when Connor Barwin deflected a pass intended for Will Tye at the line of scrimmage and Jordan Hicks was able to make a sliding catch before the ball hit the turf.

Odell Beckham turns 24 years old on Saturday. He's used to playing football in, on and around his birthday. Needless to say, he usually plays pretty well, too.

Last year on Nov. 1, OBJ had eight catches for 130 yards with three touchdowns in the Giants' 52-49 loss to the Saints in New Orleans. In his rookie year of 2014, he hauled in eight passes for 156 yards in a 40-24 loss at home to Indianapolis on Nov. 3.

This year, Beckham is nearly recovered from a hip ailment, claiming he is "85 percent." The hip issue hasn't hampered him too much, however. He hasn't missed a game and has looked pretty normal. The bye week has certainly helped him convalesce and he's ready to take it to the hated Eagles.

The New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles have played each other 167 times in the regular season and postseason since 1933 in one of the NFL's longest rivalries. But this time, two first-year coaches will lead each team.
