The Giants will need plenty of help if any shot at the playoffs is possible, but they can at least play the role of spoiler against a Chargers? team that is hanging onto playoff hope by a thread.

In the 2004 NFL Draft, Ole Miss QB Eli Manning was chosen first overall by the San Diego Chargers. The Giants, who held the fourth overall selection, took QB Philip Rivers of NC State. Many prognosticators believed Miami of Ohio QB Ben Roethlisberger was the best of the bunch, but he fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 11.

By draft day, it became well-known that Eli was not going to sign with San Diego. It was also well-known that Giants' GM Ernie Accorsi was enamored with him and was willing to trade Rivers and a package of picks to the Chargers to make that happen.

By the end of the day, Eli was a Giant and Rivers a Charger. The Giants also relinquished their third round selection in that draft (#65) and their first and fifth-round selections in 2005. At the time, experts reveled in the fact that the Giants were fleeced by San Diego GM AJ Smith. Time would prove otherwise.

Despite Hurricane Sandy hitting the New York-New Jersey area earlier this week, the Giants (6-2) and the Steelers (4-3) will still face off at 4:25 p.m. Sunday in MetLife Stadium.

It's a match-up of ?two traditional powerhouses, with the Giants and Steelers having made a combined five appearances in the Super Bowl since 2006.

Pittsburgh has won the most Super Bowl championships with 6 -- one for the other ring finger, and New York has -- of course -- two in the past five years.

As the Jets gear up to take on the Chargers and a quarterback who many consider to be one of the best currently playing, Mike Pettine lets us on in part of his plan: disguising coverage.

"You can't just sit in one coverage all the time because they'll eventually have an answer for it," Pettine said. "I think we need to do a good job of making sure he doesn't know the coverage pre-snap. If he's going to figure it out, let it be post-snap."
Forcing Rivers to take another second to think will be an important part of the next part of the Jets plan: taking advantage of the weaknesses in Rivers' arm and throwing motion.

"We talk about it when we give the scouting report," Pettine said. "I think it's critical for our defensive line to understand, that if [they] get stalemated on the rush, then go ahead and get a hand up. He's 6-foot-5, but the release point is not that of somebody that is 6-5. It's documented that he's had more than an average amount of balls deflected on him. That's always something for our guys.

In a recent article in The Sporting news, San Diego Chargers' GM A.J. Smith said that he had no regrets about drafting - and trading - Eli Manning in 2004.

"He was a Charger for 45 minutes," Smith said "and that was too much time to be a Charger, in my opinion."

Smith was of course referring to Manning's openness about not playing for San Diego, a mindset that was said to have come from Eli's famous father and brother.

Chargers QB Philip Rivers was a New York Giant for about a minute during the early moments of the 2004 NFL draft.? After the Giants selected him fourth overall, he was traded to San Diego along with a booty of draft picks in return for top pick Eli Manning.

These players will always be connected through that trade, and with Miami of Ohio's Ben Roethlisberger, who was passed over in favor of them and picked eleventh by the Steelers.

Rivers has not worn a football jersey in New York since that day.? He has yet to face a New York audience as a player.? None of this is his doing.? The schedule has kept him out of Giants Stadium until now.
