Ben Berkon, MetsBlog Contributor: Instead of trading from their depth at starting pitcher,?the Mets should dangle 25-year-old closer Jenrry Mejia?in a trade to?help their offense.

Bobby Parnell suffered?a year-ending injury within the first week of the 2014 season, after which Mejia?stepped in and finished the year with 28 saves, a?2.72 ERA (3.15 FIP) and a 2.86 strikeouts-to-walks ratio. However, despite the security Mejia provided, his season wasn't particularly special compared to?other closers in the league...

Ben Berkon, MetsBlog Contributor: Mets' left fielders combined for a 1.4 fWAR in 2014, which ranked 20 out of 30 teams in?fWAR, according to FanGraphs.com.

Terry Collins fielded six different left fielders in 2014, while using Eric Young Jr.?43.9 percent of the time. Unfortunately for Collins, despite Young's stolen bases,?he had the second worst park-adjusted wRC+ among all left fielders with at least 250 plate appearances?this past season. And if not for minor contributions from Matt den Dekker?and Kirk Nieuwenhuis offsetting Chris Young's poor performance, the team's already tepid left-field production could?have been the worst in baseball.

In early August,?Mets closer Jenrry?Mejia?said he had been pitching through pain - due to a sports hernia - for three weeks (ESPN, Aug. 10). There is less than?two weeks left to the 2014 season and - considering how the Mets handled?David Wright's?nagging shoulder injury - should they also?consider shutting their young closer down for the remainder of the season?

Ben Berkon, MetsBlog Contributor:?"Dear Mr Mejia, I pitched with sports hernia in 2010, results will not get better because you won't be able to finish your pitches," former Mets reliever Tim Byrdak recently said on Twitter (Byrdak, Aug. 10).

Ben Berkon,?Contributor?to MetsBlog.com:

New York Mets' fans apparently aren't the only people excited about the organization's future. In a recent interview with NY Daily News, Zack Wheeler indicated that his strong preference would be to stay in New York long term.

?I?d like to be here," Wheeler said. ?[...] I know [trading young players is] part of the game, but I want to be here after the rebuilding."

Lucas Duda has exceeded expectations since Ike Davis was traded to the Pirates in May. To date, the 28-year-old Duda has an?11.8 percent walk rate with 22 home runs spanning 450 plate appearances, as well as a park-adjusted 136 wRC+. The notoriously poor fielder has even looked more nimble at first base, gloving an impressive 6 Defensive Runs Saved in?926 innings.

Yet, with Duda's sole possession of first base, his extreme vulnerability against?left-handed pitching has only become more apparent. The left-handed hitter has accumulated?a pathetic .156 batting average and 39 wRC+ with just one home run over 87 plate appearances this season against southpaws.

David Clarkson scored his 23rd goal of the year last night in the Devils 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Clarkson is having a career year this season in scoring. He has 23 goals and 10 assists. His career highs before that were 17 goals and 15 assists in 08-09. Clarkson has attributed some of his success this season to first year Devils head coach Pete DeBoer, who coached Clarkson in juniors for the Kitchener Rangers.

Martin Brodeur got his 21st win of the season in a 21 save effort against his hometown Montreal Canadiens. It could be Brodeur's last time playing in Montreal should he retire at the end of the season. The win moves the Devils into 4th place in the East conference and puts the Devils 9 points behind the conference leading New York Rangers.

As you can see Marion Gaborik is on top of Martin Brodeur as the puck is in the net. The goal was disallowed and Gaborik was penalized with goaltender interference. Obviously it has caused much debate as to whether the goal should have counted. To be honest , I can see it going both ways but 99% of the time the referees are going to side with the goaltender. But these kind of things are a part of the game.

Ilya Kovalchuk had his first Gordie Howe Hat Trick (a fight, a goal and an assist) this afternoon in the Devils' 6-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. Kovalchuk had a really nice shot on Brayden Schenn's face in the fight and was the clear cut victor in the fight. Kovalchuk was reacting to when Parise was slewfooted in the 2nd period. Good to see an emotional Kovalchuk.

The Devils came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Ottawa Senators 5-4 in a shootout. The team really came together after coach Peter DeBoer pulled Martin Brodeur for Johan Hedberg. It's great to see that the team responded positively.
