[sny-box] In a battle of the two top teams in the Atlantic Division, the Raptors held a 94-85 lead with just over eight minutes remaining. But the Nets rallied on the shoulders of Paul Pierce to go on a 9-0 run to tie the game and eventually take the lead.

For the first time in his career, Paul Pierce played against the only franchise he'd ever known since coming into the league in 1998. He and Kevin Garnett were teammates in Celtics green for six seasons, but they were visitors at the TD Garden on Sunday.
The atmosphere was electric all night long, with thunderous cheers and classy first-quarter video tributes for the two future Hall of Fame Celtic legends.

[sny-box] The Nets were able to keep this game close in the first half ? trailing by only six at the break ? despite shooting only 35 percent from the field. But the Pacers took control in the third quarter, outscoring Brooklyn 30-19, en route to an easy victory.

Bleacher Report's Howard Beck writes that the Nets could look to trade Pierce for future considerations if they truly believe they can't compete without their star center, and speculates a reunion with his former coach could be in the cards:
[sny-box]Nets officials must now confront the same calculus: If the title chase is lost, is there any reason to keep Pierce? Is there any reason not to trade him by the Feb. 20 deadline??Even at 36, Pierce could be valuable as a short-term rental for a contending team. A reunion with Doc Rivers in Los Angeles seems more than plausible, if the Nets and?Clippers?can work out the details.[/sny-box]

Joe Johnson is a game time decision due to personal reasons.
Just as Kidd held out Brook Lopez on Monday against a weaker Sixers team (and was rewarded with a blow out win), Kidd will take a similar approach with Garnett. With a four game week on the horizon, which includes two match ups with the Pacers, this seems like a good idea. Expect Mirza Teletovic to get the start at the four.

"It's easy to sit here and talk to you guys about what kind of night I had. But bottom line, I really don't care. We lost the game. That's pretty much all that matters. We come out here and try to win as a team. It's not about how good Paul Pierce is playing. [Against Washington], we had the inability to rebound. We didn't defend the three and it cost us the game. And that's all I'm worried about."-- Paul Pierce

Pierce told reporters after practice that he won't be wearing the glove that covered his broken hand?unless he feels further pain. Pierce said he feels more comfortable shooting without it.
Since returning from the non-displaced fracture in his hand, Pierce is shooting 38.4% from the field (10-for-26). However, he is 8-for-16 (50%) in his last two games, and?he's 7-for-14 from three (50%) over the four game stretch since the injury.

Shooting: A-Finally,?shots are dropping for Brooklyn. The Nets shot a stunning 55.7% against Boston, thanks in large part to open looks and a solid paint presence (that has a lot to do with Brook Lopez's return). They followed that up with a 44.6% effort against the Clippers. Williams looking like a top tier point guard is creating space for everyone, and the Nets haven't gotten this many good looks in weeks. Kevin Garnett's shot is finally coming around, though it still won't set the world on fire, and Joe Johnson had a money outing against L.A. Even Paul Pierce showed some vintage looks.

Nets fans are searching for something to be positive about (justifiably so) in this mess of an early season and?the ?win over Boston certainly is a place to start. It was probably the best this team has played all year. With Deron Williams coming back, and Paul Pierce surprising everyone with an early return, it looks like we can finally see what this team is all about. I still need to see Andrei Kirilenko on the floor, but beggars can't be choosers, I suppose.
That said, with all the optimism coming from the D-Will return, I would still pump the brakes a bit and not go too crazy with a single two-game winning streak. ?I want to see them win tonight against a road weary Clippers team that is coming off a game last night in Boston.?If they can play with the same energy and passion as last game tonight and grab another win it could make me start to think that maybe they have found something.

Rivers told Bleacher Report's Howard Beck that Pierce isn't done, and he thinks he'd actually benefit from?more?minutes in the Nets' rotations:
[sny-box]"[Paul] can score anywhere. I think he was more uncomfortable with the short minutes that they were [playing him], like they did with Kevin. And that?s not Paul. Paul?doesn?t work under those type of minutes?at least, in my opinion he doesn?t. He?s a guy that needs a rhythm to play. In Kevin?s case, on a 20-minute restriction, of course his numbers are going to be down. So I think at some point, he probably is going to have to play more minutes to improve, so he can get a better rhythm himself."[/sny-box]

A lot of times, filling a need works better in theory than in reality, but for Brooklyn, the reality of filling those holes in the front court manifested in a way few could have dreamed of. Out go Gerard Wallace and Kris Humphries, in come future Hall of Famers Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. Suddenly, the Nets' front court is as good on paper as it's been in a long time, and it goes far beyond the two Boston imports.
The trio of Lopez, Garnett and Pierce will get the majority of the attention, and with a combined 26 All-Star selections, that's no surprise. But the big men coming off the bench are no joke either, as Jim Mancari discussed earlier. Andray Blatche is coming off an outstanding first season in Brooklyn, and he may see a lot more minutes this year as part of a "Twin Towers" package alongside Brook Lopez. The two 7-footers have been a dynamic duo when they've played together, and that hasn't gone unnoticed by the coaching staff.

Projecting the top 10 power forwards for the upcoming season, analyst Bradford Doolittle placed Carmelo Anthony in the No. 10 spot. According to Doolittle, Anthony's 11 WARP -- the first double-digit offensive efficiency total -- is combated by a poor defensive effort.
"His offensive efficiency spiked with his position shift, and his acceptance of the move," Doolitte wrote. "The downside of the tweak is Anthony's lack of defensive acumen. His defensive rebounding was fine when he was a 3, but one position over, it doesn't look too good. Anthony does, without a doubt, score a lot of points. Make of that what you will."

Coach Mike Woodson wants to see Shumpert improve his offensive game this summer, and that's precisely what the third-year swingman is doing.

Now that the Brooklyn Nets have made the massive trade to bring in Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett everyone wants to know how the pieces will fit.
The 10 time All-Star and 2008 NBA Finals MVP looked a bit old against the New York Knicks in the playoffs this past season and some of it had to do with the increased minutes he played. The workload that Pierce was subjected to was due to the season ending injury suffered by Rajon Rondo earlier in the year.

I was anxiously awaiting the Brooklyn Nets? pick at No. 22 and hoped they would select a big man to provide depth on the bench, which they did in Mason Plumlee.

The Skinny: The Celtics raced out to the early lead, relying on hot three-point shooting to open an eight-point lead. But Joe Johnson found his outside stroke, and the Nets responded with a 13-2 run, capped off by back-to-back three-pointers by C.J. Watson. Brooklyn led by one after one.
Deron Williams took control offensively to open the second quarter, helping to increase the Nets? lead to six. Boston?s second unit immediately fought back to regain the lead, but from there the Nets went on a 15-4 run to lead by 10 at the break. D-Will scored 11 points in the quarter, and things began to get chippy as Kevin Garnett picked up a technical foul for a skirmish with Reggie Evans.

"I've heard that speech from seven of the defensive coordinators I've played with in my nine-year career," Pierce the New York Daily News this week. "Think about it, if a guy knows he's going to get hit hard, he's not going to come across that middle."
In addition, Pierce said players always know who's hurt. Heck, all they have to do is pick up the paper and read the injury report....
"I didn't get that training camp energy that I like from when I played and from being around training camps," Pierce said. "I'm talking about the energy of 'let's go out and do this.' Coach Coughlin talked about the steely-eyed focus. I didn't feel that. There was just something missing."
"The first day in pads, there should have been some screaming, guys getting after it. You've been away from the team for nine months, your season ended in December, you've been sitting around, no OTAs, no minicamps. Guys are fresh. I know it's only one practice, but still . . . "
"I don?t see it getting any prettier," Pierce said per ESPN New York's Ohm Youngmisuk. "Obviously this is a situation where Osi, he?s had enough of the New York Giants and everything that has been going on with these contracts and trades. I think it is just time for Osi to get a fresh start. You could sense yesterday that there was some frustration amongst a lot of people in that organization.
"This thing hasn?t been resolved yet," Pierce added. "Osi wants to play ball and he wants to be paid to play ball at a very high price. I don?t think the Giants are going to give him that deal that he wants. And to me it would be in the best interest of everybody, you got an unhappy player in that organization in this time, in that Giants franchise, that they need to move forward with that and maybe let Osi go."
But in reviewing that draft here in 2011, I can't help but catching myself on the glaring error the Giants may have made in the first round.

Defense Aware Of What Is At Stake in 2010After a disappointing end to a promising 5-0 start last year, and an epic collapse in the final month of the 2008? season, the Giants recognized that changes needed to be made; one of which lead to the release of former Giants? linebacker Antonio Pierce.
Although Pierce may have exited the New York spotlight, that didn?t stop him from grabbing some of its headlines this off-season when he publicly stated both player and coaching personnel within the Giants organization were on ?high alert?; the fascinating part about all of this is that he is not alone.
?I think he?s right on key with that,? Giants defensive back Terrell Thomas said. ?The last two years have been very disappointing, coming off a Super Bowl win, coming back with a 12-win season, and losing in playoffs early on, and then coming back the following year going 5-0, and then pretty much going on a roller coaster ride ever since then, its been up and down since then. We have to find a way to overcome that.?

Brother of Kiwanuka Hurt in Cycle AccidentThe older brother of Giants' DE Mathias Kiwanuka is in critical condition this morning.? Benedict Kiwanuka, 32, was thrown from his mortorcycle after colliding with a car on an Indianapolis street yesterday.

Mathias, 27, riding alongside his brother, was not seriously hurt, according to reports.
Pierce's neck injury is possibly a career-ending one, depending on who you talk to.? With one year to go on his contract, it was a 50-50 chance that he could play this year anyhow.
Questions about Pierce's range arose last season only to be pooh-poohed by the Giant coaches, but it was apparent that "AP" was slowing up.? The Giants also could not have been pleased with Pierce's role in the Plaxico affair, which makes this move less stinging.

In it, Fred talks about his training camp prep for what is now less than a month away.
"It's important to be in the right state of mind mentally. Before training camp you want to spend a lot of time with your family and friends because once training camp starts that?s all over for a while. Just try to do your day to day activities, some of your hobbies, prepare yourself and get your mind prepared," said Robbins of his time leading up to training camp.
