Pierre McGurie was on TSN1050 this morning and spoke about tonight's Game 7 between the Rangers and Tampa Bay:

  • "For the Rangers, I have been there where I saw Tyler Johnson score a 3 on 5 shorthanded goal and get a Natural Hat Trick in the same game and blow the Rangers out at MSG and the Rangers were never comfortable. I was there in Game 5 where the Rangers had a half hearted effort and had a lot of shots blocked. I have seen them lose twice at MSG. Tampa is comfortable playing at MSG. It's a little different. Everyone is pointing at the numbers and Lundqvist this and Lundqvist that and I respect that and think that he does have an edge, clearly he has an advantage but don't blow this Tampa team off because they are a lethal team."
  • He said that Tampa needs to stress that they have beaten the Rangers twice at MSG in the playoffs and go over the things that they have done well, "quick strike offense, shot blocking, no odd-man rushes against, faceoff wins, really good PP. Stress the positives but also have the caveat that we don't panic. We went into Montreal, we beat Detroit in Game 7. You need to stress all the points you have gone through in the playoffs so far."
  • On Henrik, "he can block out all the white noise. He is amazing in terms of focus and intensity. If you were to take a video recorder and just follow him around before a game and during the warm up, just have an ISO on him for about 45 minutes, he doesn't communicate with anyone but the trainer who works with his sticks on the bench. He doesn't talk to his teammates, the refs, the opposition, doesn't talk to the security guards, doesn't talk to anyone. He is in his own little world and has the way to create a bubble wrap around himself. He is so intense and focused and into his own thought process that he never gets off his game. That is the one thing that stands out about him that I have seen from very few players in the league."
  • Which player could step up tonight, "I don't think there has been one player in this series that you can call a gross underachiever. That is the one thing that has stood out about this series. One guy that broke through was Ryan Callahan, people are saying where is the offense, how about that he had surgery on his appendix and is just starting to feel better about himself."

Pierre McGuire was on TSN1050 this morning and spoke about the Rangers Game 6 win in Tampa Bay:

  • On the Rangers as a team, "They definitely have some form of intensity and being able to rise to the moment that is unique. That said they are playing with fire and it's not an easy way to go about your business. They found a way so far but I am not sure they want to continue to do things this way. They are lucky they have a goalie in Henrik Lundqvist and they are fortunate that Stepan and Brassard responded from a challenge Alain Vigneault presented. Those guys were tremendous and if not they probably are eliminated. It's a hard team with a lot of experience and guys who have been around but with Game 7 and the extra day that is positive for the Rangers."
  • The Rangers cycle game broke down the end zone coverage of Tampa Bay.
  • On Derick Brassard's game last night, "it was a tremendous performance. JT Miller was tremendous, Rick Nash was outstanding. Brassard could have had more points because he missed a few chances. He needed to do that, is it a Messier type performance? I don't know, I didn't see that. It was a great performance and something that will go down as a key performance in Rangers history."
  • On Brassard being a number one center, "he is getting close. Part of the problem was that he had terrible shoulder situations when he was in Columbus, felt terrible for the kid. He was a real good player with Drummondville, international for Canada at the under 18. The biggest problem for his was his shoulders and being in the NHL as an 18 year old and already dealing with major shoulder situations. He has a chance to be a legit top 1-2 guy, in a perfect world he is a two but in the Rangers situation he is a good 1A/1B with Derek Stepan and Kevin Hayes coming along. It's a good situation for the Rangers because both Stepan and Brassard are young players who still have growing to do in their game."
  • On Keith Yandle, "He was solid and a couple of times where it was a little scary. Yandle at the end of a PP shot it high and wide and on the far side so it goes around the boards and creates an odd-man rush...That was a big time goal that he scored and it was probably as well as he has played since he has been with the Rangers."

Pierre McGuire was on TSN1050 this morning and spoke about tonight's Game 4 against Tampa Bay:

Pierre said that the Rangers need to take away Tampa's neutral zone speed over "the series will be over on Sunday night."

He said that while it's very tough to do on the road the Rangers need to get back to establishing matchups with Marc Staal and Dan Boyle against Steven Stamkos and Ryan McDOnagh and Dan Girardi against the Triplets "all the time."

McGuire?spoke on TSN 1050 early Thursday morning to recap the Rangers Game 3 loss to Tampa Bay.

He said the Rangers were successful shutting down the Capitals power play, the best in the regular season, last series, but are now running into trouble vs. the Lightning. Tampa Bay was 4 for 8 on the power play in Games 2 and 3.

Pierre McGuire was on TSN1050 this morning and spoke about game 2 between the Rangers and Lightning:

  • He said last night's dominant victory by the Lighting was due to?their performance and not a lack of effort on the Rangers part.
  • On the Rangers mistakes, Tampa "forced a lot those mistakes" and drew them?into "silly and selfish penalties."
  • Tampa "made adjustments" including going to a seven defenseman and 11 forwards lineup with quick hard and off shifts that had different combinations throughout the game that worked for them.
  • On the Lightning power play, they had really good spacing and excellent balance on both sides of the ice with left and right handed shots. They have "a lot of different weapons that can make the power play work."
  • Lightning head coach Jon Cooper is "pretty reserved, calm, cool and collective" on the bench during the game.

Pierre McGuire was on TSN1050 this morning and spoke about the Rangers and Lightning:

  • He said that the first period of Game 1 "was as fast as any game" he's seen so far this postseason.
  • On the goalies, he said Ben Bishop was a huge difference maker and the reason the score was so close. McGuire believes that's the least duress Henrik Lundqvist has been under this postseason.
  • The Lightning need to find a way to keep Steven Stamkos away from matchups with Marc Staal and Dan Boyle, and decide whether or not they want to play Stamkos on the wing or at center.
  • On the one thing that stands out for the Rangers: "They?re comfortable, and I think their experience last year going to the Stanley Cup finals really helped them. They?re comfortable in a lot of different environments, two years in a row coming from behind in a 3-1 deficit series?I think they?ve learned a lot about themselves as a group. They really trust one another."

Pierre McGuire was on TSN1200 this morning in Ottawa and said that he isn't expecting much OT in this series.

Pierre said, "I'm not sure this will have OT in any game. No, this will be high octane offense and whoever blinks first will lose. This will be a drag race. This will be one of the fastest paced offensive series we have seen in a while and the goalies will really need to stand tall."

He added that he thinks the Rangers top four defense will put a lot of focus on stopping Steven Stamkos' line and the Tyler Johnson line.

Pierre McGuire was on TSN1050 this morning and spoke about the Rangers and Caps:

  • He said that based on how the goalies are playing no one should be shocked that this is going to seven games.
  • "Chris Kreider is really starting to elevate for the Rangers."
  • "everything saws off, that is why we have a game seven."
  • On Rick Nash scoring, "that was a real smart play. Rick scoring is really good but the biggest thing, when I look at Nash, the biggest thing is the way he plays. He plays with so much pace and energy and people are ripping him because he doesn't score a lot but he does so much in terms of the PK and PP but the Caps have the number one PP and they went 0 for the game and I think that a big reason why is how Rick Nash influenced that entire PK for the Rangers."
  • On Chris Kreider, "He could be one of the more dominant power forwards in the NHL, he really could. His size and strength and skating, there are a very few people in the league. I compared him to Brandon Saad yesterday. When you look at his strength, how he shoots the puck. He can overwhelm people physically. This is a guy who has the potential to be one of the more dominant big men in the game."
  • The Rangers have been able to establish matchups against Ovechkin and the Rangers have taken away his one-timer. He thinks that the Rangers learned from watching Johnny Boychuk and how he defended him in the first round.
  • The extra day off should make for a better game.

Pierre McGuire was on TSN1050 this morning and spoke about the Rangers/Caps series.

Pierre said "They are playing very well, the Washington Capitals and that is not to say that the Rangers are playing poorly because they are playing pretty darn well too. It's a goalie series. There have been chances for both sides but the goalies have been elite and it's been fun to watch. Last night was like an old 1990s Patrick Division game, it was nasty, it was smash mouth, the refs let them play which was interesting. What may have been a penalty in the regular season was not a penalty last night. A lot of physical, nasty play, skill. Burakovsky had a great game playing on the Killer Bs line with Brouwer and Beagle. Really entertaining night."

Washington, after they got the coaches message, started to play more physical and this series is going to be tough and grinding on whomever wins but it's been delightful to watch, the caliber of play has been very high."

Pierre McGurie was on TSN1050 this morning and spoke about the Rangers loss to the Capitals in game one last night.

Pierre said, "The Rangers started fantastically well so their rest didn't bother them at all but Alexander Ovechkin decided to take the game over and he did. He was just omnipresent the entire game, shooting the puck, passing, hitting people, backing defensemen off. He was phenomenal. His coach double shifted him, started playing with different combinations and it was a huge swing moment in the game. I felt that Barry Trotz really took that game over along with Alex Ovechkin. Braden Holtby in the third was really good for Washington."

Yesterday it was Cam Talbot but also James Sheppard on a wraparound goal, Matt Hunwick, who was relegated to the bleachers because of other guys there were playing ahead of him, he had a goal and an assist. There are just so many things, shot blocking was fantastic, when you look at it and put it together, they are playing as a group and last year going to the Final helped them with confidence and understanding what you need to do to? win. They understand the pressure and it's working out well for them."

Pierre said, "I think they are a better team for more than just Rick Nash. Derick Brassard, and I go back to watching him in Drummondville of the QMJHL, I have never seen him play this well. They didn?t have to go through a contract situation with Derek Stepan, they didn?t have to go through a contract situation with Lundqvist, they have overcome the injuries to McDonagh so they have adapted and overcome. Zuccarello is back on track and you look at it, they have had lot of good things happen."

He added, "you look at the addition of Kevin Hayes, he will start the game as the fourth center for the Rangers and if you watch him he is a huge body and has skill. I walked into the rink with him, Kevin is almost 6-6, I felt I was walking into the rink with a basketball player, not a hockey player. The Rangers are a good team because they have great team speed. That is the best way to do it if you are the coach of a team that is really good in a hot media and hockey market like NYC is, the best way to do it is the way Alain Vigneault is. Undersell everything and bring more than what you sold. It's gonna work and he is doing it."(Sirius)

On Kevin Klein scoring six goals this season, Pierre said that Klein was given opportunities due to injuries and suspensions and that his role has changed at times this season. He added that one thing he has known about Kevin Klein since the World Juniors in 2004-05 was how hard his shot is and that he could shoot the puck as hard as anyone on that team. Pierre also noted how Henrik Lundqvist said Klein has probably the hardest and most accurate shot on the Rangers.

In chatting with Pierre McGuire after the Ranger 2-0 win over the Flyers, Derek Stepan said that the Rangers were "structurally sound" and did a good job of defending and managing the puck.

Kevin Klein said on ESPN Radio last night that the Rangers just brought effort last night and had all five guys on the ice and Cam Talbot on the same page. He said that no one was shying away from trying to make a play and everyone on the ice wanted the puck and did a good job managing it.

Alain Vigneault said after the game, ?our first two periods were, we barely gave them 5-6 chances and generated I want to say close to 20 and a lot of them were Grade A chances. In the third they had a lot of push there in the last five minutes and Cam made some tremendous saves. Right from the start we played the right way and we have to continue.?

Pierre McGuire was on TSN 1050 this morning and was asked about how the Rangers bounced back against the Penguins.

Pierre said, "Henrik Lundqvist was really solid in goal but you can see getting Derek Stepan back makes a big difference, he has good chemistry with Rick Nash and Marty St. Louis, Derick Brassard gets more room and he becomes a more lethal player. The Rangers are starting to feel it, they were very upset with their last couple of games, especially their last game at home against Edmonton where they basically didn't show up. You move forward from there if you are the Rangers, it's a good win and a quality win but you can't take your foot off the accelerator."

Pierre McGuire was a guest on TSN 690 last night and spoke about tonight's Rangers/Habs game.

Pierre said that for Montreal to get some "payback" tonight they need to plant concern in the minds of the Rangers and make them realize that the Habs are a better team this year.

On the Rangers Pierre said, "the one thing that I would caution is the Rangers from last year to this year is that it's a little different, a little different texture to this Rangers team. I think they might be a little quicker, they might a tinge bigger and they have a player ripping it up in Rick Nash who was not ripping it up last year. They also don't have to deal with Henrik Lundqvist's contract situation, he is signed and knows where he is going to be. 12:23PM: Hayes spoke with the media today (Lohud on Soundcloud)

  • "I played center the first two years and RW the last two years."
  • Did you center Kreider, "yes, me him and Strait."
  • On starting at center, "They saw me last year at wing the whole year, the first ten games I played center and then I got switched over to wing with Johnny and Billy. In camp I am a center and I am happy to be anywhere. Wherever they tell me to play."
  • On center, "it's something I need to work on, D zone, it's something that you can learn in games and practice and I feel comfortable there right now."
  • What are they teaching you now, "It's just the basics of how they play and what they want you to do and what they don't want you to do. It's pretty similar, nothing too dramatic."
  • Were you happy with Traverse City, "yea, I thought I played pretty well. I had the puck a lot, was protecting the puck. Was nice to get going. It was just fun to play the games. A lot of trial and error."
  • "Look at the scrimmage as I would a game, play my role and succeed at it and play my role and show what I can bring."
  • On his size, "it's nice to be big, I think everyone wishes they were big. You have a long reach and can protect the puck pretty well, big body, hard to knock off the puck and it's stuff I am trying to incorporate into my game better."
  • Is your size better for wing or center, "I think I skate pretty well for a center, I wouldn't say that I am overly fast but not slow but it's nice to be big with speed and nice to be coming through the middle with size."
  • How big, "A little over 6-4, 220. "
  • Were you challenged physically in Traverse City, "yea, there were some big guys there, I think we were the only team that didn't have NHL guys on the squad. Good competition, felt good, felt like I played pretty well."
  • On PP role, "I played D, we had a pretty skilled team so our PP was pretty good, I played D with Matheson and Gaudreau."
  • On taking a beating, "That is what I am willing to do. My brother has told me everything."

Just having spent some time with Ryan last week and seeing how his teammates have really galvanized around him and talking with other Ranger players, older ones and younger ones, McDonagh seems to be the bridge between the older guys and the younger guys. There is a sense of maturity around McDonagh, he was drafted in 2007 and you can just sense it and feel it. He is a married guy, really serious, trains like a machine, has been in the Olympics, potential Norris Trophy winner, he is everything that you want and he communicates really well. I would say that he is the odds on favorite."
