In an interview taped to be aired on the Yes Network's Center Stage, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin stated his belief that the team would have repeated as Super Bowl championships in '09 if not for Plaxico Burress' nightclub mishap.

?We were the best team in the NFL at the time of the shooting,? Coughlin said during the taping.

Burress shot a gun off in his pant legs during the 2008 season. At the time, the team was 11-1, but lost three of their final four contests and eventually to their NFC East rival Eagles in the playoffs. Coughlin said if the incident did not occur, he was "certain" they would have been crowned champions a second consecutive year.

With Mike Wallace surely to be signed by either Miami or perhaps Minnesota in the next few hours, the Steelers are already looking to replenish their receiving corp with a familiar name....

Burress began his NFL career with Pittsburgh as their first round draft pick in 2000 out of Michigan State. After four productive years for the Steelers, he left to sign a six year, $25 million deal with the Giants in 2005 that was extended in 2008 (five years, $35 mil).

Yes it is a slow news day when we have to report court proceedings involving ex -Giants.

Former Giant WR Plaxico Burress is appealing a judgment against him deriving from a car accident he had in Florida a few years back...from TMZ:

As TMZ first reported, Plax lost a lawsuit in January stemming from a car accident back in 2008 and a judge awarded the victim, Alise Smith, $125,000 for her troubles.

Last year, I was all over the idea of Plaxico Burress coming back to the Giants after his release from prison. I urged the Giants to take a look.

They did better than just look. The Giants met with Burress and even showed some interest in signing him. In the end, he chose to sign with the Jets instead. It was an experiment that didn't really work out for both signor and signee.

The Jets' offense did not take advantage of Burress' attributes as fully as they could have. In turn, he had been out of football for three years and wasn't nearly the player he was before his incarceration.

Former Giant WR Plaxico Burress made headlines by signing with the Jets instead of the Giants and Steelers after being released from prison this summer. Many felt he would be the component Gang Green was missing in their passing game.

Well, here we are in Week 16 and the Burress signing has not quite been the coup d'etat the Jets has hoped. ?He has 8 TDs, but three of them came in one game. He has not caught more than five balls in a single game and the 79 yards he gained vs Buffalo on Nov 6 is his season high.

Let us mention that he's only caught four passes for 42 yards in the last three games. He has become a quiet backstory in this important game between two crosstown rivals that are both in need of a win.

The injured DE Mike DeVito (knee), NT Kenrick Ellis (ankle), WR Plaxico Burress (lower), and CB Isiah Trufant (hamstring) all participated in position drills during practice yesterday and are all listed as questionable for tomorrow's game.

Rex Ryan is most optimistic about Burress, who has been receiving heat treatment for soreness in his back. Ellis and DeVito's injuries are both more serious, and though these players are listed in the same category, it's less likely they'll play.

Personally, I'm most concerned about Plaxico's absence. He and Mark Sanchez seemed to have finally found a rhythm against the San Diego Chargers and it would be a shame to see that shaken up.

Plaxico Burress caught only four passes for 25 yards today in the Jets' victory over the San Diego Chargers, but three of them were in the paint, where he does his best work.

Many teams try to single cover the 6'5" Burress down low, a mistake that continues to cost teams dearly. Three years ago, the New England Patriots thought they could handle Plax one-one-one and their 18-0 season turned into 18-1 in a hurry. ?It is not sound defense.

Over the last 20 years Kevin Gilbride has been the quarterbacks coach or the offensive coordinator for six different teams in NFL!? The constant landscape change would lead you to believe his services are not well regarded.

For five years Gilbride ran the run and shoot in Houston.? Run and shoot!? That puts the fear in me even as I write it.? Yes, the team had huge offensive numbers but that was Warren Moon.

Last time I checked, Warren Moon was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.? I'm gonna stick with my theory that Moon made Gilbride look pretty good.

NorthJersey.com was able to pry something of a response to Jets WR Plaxico Burress' inteview in Men's Journal out of a couple of Giants players. For the most part, the team was tight-lipped (coach Tom Coughlin and co-owner John Mara had no comment), but Hakeem Nicks had this to say:

"In my eyes, he?s one of the toughest quarterbacks in the game," Nicks said of Manning, who did not address Burress? comments with the media Friday.

"You never know when he?s playing through pain. You never know what?s hurting him. He?s going to go out here each time and give you his all. That?s what you look forward to having in a leader."Safety Deon Grant spoke (a bit vaguely) about the responsibility of coaches to players, referencing Burress' unhappiness after his "incident":

Plaxico Burress never shuts up.

The NY Giant fans loved Plaxico for everything he did en route to winning the SuperBowl.?? The NFC Championship game against the Green Bay Packers was a complete domination by a wide receiver.? Plaxico Burress came home last night. ?Sure, he's already played a game in this new stadium but this game vs the Giants was his real homecoming.

The visiting Jets are featuring Plaxico in their retooled passing game. They even sent Burress out to handle the coin flip before the game...

Don't listen to all this jive about Plaxico Burress dissing the Giants for the Jets. It's not true. Had the Giants offered him more money, he'd be wearing blue today instead of green.

After serving two-and-a-half years in prison, Burress wanted to come home. That meant New Jersey. Once that happened, he needed to find a job near that home. That narrowed it down to two options: the Giants and the Jets. The Jets offered more money and he accepted.

I don't always agree with New York Times' columnist William Rhoden, and this is another example. In this video, Rhoden talks about how Eli Manning and Plaxico Burress will never again experience the high that they did on that February night in Super Bowl XLII.

I disagree. Manning is still in his prime and has the talent to take the Giants back to the Super Bowl. (And yes, I realize the same can be said for plenty of other players and teams around the league.)?Burress, I believe, will have a big year for the Jets (assuming he's healthy), and who knows where that will lead.

Giant fans are sitting back tonight gritting their teeth. Another non-move or near-miss by GM Jerry Reese this preseason has come back to haunt them. Yes, they made an offer to WR Plaxico Burress, but it wasn't enough. He signed with the Jets.

How does Plaxico Burress help your offense? Let me count the ways....he catches everything, cannot be single-covered and blocks like a TE. He is a quarterback's best friend.

In the lanky WR's first game since shooting himself in the leg in November 2008, he's playing like he never left the game. In the pouring rain at NMS tonight, Burress hauled in three Mark Sanchez passes for a total of 66 yards in the first half.

Recently, Plaxico Burress sat down with HBO's "Real Sports" for an interview that will be aired on Tuesday. The segment looks promising, as the few quotes that HBO has let leak are, well, hilarious.

Here's Plaxico talking about discussing his charges with Ben Brafman, his lawyer:

"I sat down with Ben and he was like, ?We got a problem,'" Burress recalled. "I said, ?What you talking about?' He said Mayor Bloomberg just went on TV and said you should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

In the New York Post today, Mike Tannenbaum described the way the Jets went about signing Plaxico Burress. Much of the story focuses on the last-minute nature of the deal: how an offer was made to Burress during his one-hour layover in Los Angeles on his way to Pittsburgh and how he drove for 30 minutes looking for a hotel he could spend the night in (and fax a contract to the Jets from) after making his decision.

Then, there's this, which is just pure Tanny:

ESPN New York's Stephen A. Smith?writes in his latest column that Giants quarterback Eli Manning showed a lack of leadership?as his team pursued wide receiver Plaxico Burress,?and seems to suggest that by not publically recruiting Burress, Manning is the reason Plaxico signed with the Jets and not the Giants.

Right, Steven A. It had nothing to do with the three million guaranteed that the Jets offered Burress?versus the one million guaranteed that the Giants offered.

Burress chose the Jets because they offered the most guaranteed money. Plain and simple. He's been out of the league since 2008 and in prison for a good portion of that time. He'll be 34 this month so he knows that he doesn't have too many big paydays left. He took advantage of this one to get himself restarted. And he had every right to do that.

My take on the state of the Giants after the most chaotic week in league history:

First let?s talk Burress. I didn?t see him coming back to the Giants and quite frankly I was utterly stunned that he planned a visit. We all know how that ended and the former Super Bowl hero is trading in his blue jersey for a ?Sexy Rexy? T-shirt.

All this does is validate the concerns I had been airing (against much opposition) over the past few months. Steve Smith is not healthy. He is not ready to start the season and likely will start the season on PUP (meaning he is ineligible to play until after WEEK 6).

Tom Coughlin said today the Giants made a contract offer to Plaxico Burress, but he "decided to go elsewhere" according our colleague Zach Berman of the Star-Ledger. The Jets simply came in and outbid the Giants.

"His decision was to go elsewhere," Coughlin said. "Sounded like a bigger guarantee, I don't know all the facts about that."

It makes sense to us now. Plaxico chose to shop his services to the two organizations that he knew best; the Steelers and the Giants. He wanted that familiarity, but he wanted to get paid in process.

By bringing in Plaxico Burress Friday evening, the Giants did - and are doing - exactly what I'd expect from them.

First, they're a class organization, one that would be willing to give a guy like Burress a second chance. In fact, when you consider the reprimands and fines and suspensions from the past, he's already gotten that from Big Blue.

Second, the Giants are a football team that?would benefit?from the services of a wide receiver who at one point in his career was one of the best in the game. I thought GM Jerry Reese?gave a very interesting?response yesterday when asked if he felt the Giants need to put Burress through a workout before considering whether to sign him:

"I think he is a different guy now," he added. "The question is can he live within the system here and then once we get past that, can we make his salary number fit within our salary cap? It really is a two-fold step and that begins tomorrow night."

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Plaxico Burress is expected to decide between the Giants and Steelers.

Sources believe only a productive, fence-mending meeting between Burress and Coughlin stands between the wide receiver rejoining the Giants and making more than $10 million over two years.

However, Tomlin expects to make his own strong sales pitch for Burress to join the Steelers, who made him a first-round draft choice out of Michigan State in 2000, sources added.Burress has a great relationship with Steve Tisch, so if Burress and Coughlin can get past their differences, the Giants seem to have a small advantage over the Steelers. However, the Steelers are a great organization with connections to Burress as well.

Welcome to day 122 of the NFL Lockout. There could be light at the end of the tunnel as our Rich Resch reported yesterday (see post below). Sources are saying a deal could be in place by the 21st, which is nine days from now.

That is about a week later than the league's drop-dead date of July 15th, the date most agreed was the latest in order to get the season started on time. This gives teams - especially the Rams and Bears ?- a very short window to prepare for the season. The two are scheduled to meet in the Hall of Fame game on August 7th.

Is Greg Jones too small to play in the NFL? Not according to the Giants. They believe the 5'11 rookie out of Michigan State will compete for a roster spot and perhaps even win the MLB job someday.
