The Giants' blowout victory over the 49ers yesterday said a lot about Big Blue.

But just how much?

The Giants earned a series of "firsts" and caused a series of "firsts" for the 49ers.

The Giants' mash unit grew a little bit bigger Sunday night when safety Kenny Phillips suffered a sprained right knee.

The severity of the MCL sprain is still unknown. Tom Coughlin said his safety is week-to-week and will get an MRI.

It's a bad sign that Phillips was unable to re-enter the game, but X-rays did come back negative.

Giants' CB Prince Amukamara spoke to the media shortly today at TIMEX. The Giants' former first-round selection is mentally ready to return to action after turning his ankle in the preseason. But is he physically ready? He is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay and he has not been told if he will dress this week.

What?s your status for Sunday?

The coach hasn?t told me anything yet. I just practiced this whole week and just did the best I can out there.?

The Giants' secondary will once again have it's hands full this Sunday against Tampa Bay, who have a formidable group of receivers in Vincent Jackson, Dallas Clark , Mike Williams and Arrelious Benn.

The defense is hoping to get CB Prince Amukamara back this week, but he just began practicing lightly only yesterday.

"He does have some issues," said Tom Coughlin. "He?s just fighting his way through them."

CB Prince Amukamara sustained a high ankle sprain in the Giants' preseason game last week vs the Bears. The initial prognosis was 2-3 weeks, which is the norm for such an injury. Prince is still hopeful that he can return for the Giants opener vs the Cowboys next Wednesday, but the realistic view is he won't be ready until Week Two against Tampa Bay.

Prince told the media today that he is on the road to recovery and is taking it day by day....

How?s the ankle feel? You?re out of the boot?"Yeah, I?m out of the walking boot. I?ve been rehabbing, walking better, and it feels a lot better than it did last week. It?s only been six days, so we?re still taking it day-by-day."

Giants' CB Prince Amukamara knows the stakes are high when it comes to his career. He fell to the Giants in last year's NFL Draft (19th overall), experts were declaring it the steal of the draft.

But, as usual, there's always a price to pay for good fortune. Amukamara broke a bone in his foot during his very first practice as a Giant and missed half the season. By the time he was activated, he was so far behind the in the learning curve, he was only used in certain packages.

This year, the team has raised the ante for Prince. His slow development has led to teasing and hazing from teammates and to top things off, ?he is dealing with a new injury that threatens the start of another season ?Still, he remains positive:

The Giants put the viral video hazing incident behind them today by making all the principals involved available to the media. Punter Steve Weatherford apologized for posting the video on Twitter, Jason Pierre-Paul and Prince Amukamara both insist everything is "cool" between them.

From Jorge Castillo of the Star Ledger:

Throughout the locker room, players said the act was all in good fun, the standard "horseplay" that permeates the NFL. But, as Justin Tuck put it, the word of the day was "perception", and language used in the video along with the look on Amukamara's face after he emerged from the tub put into question whether it was innocent fun. Amukamara maintains it was.

Yes, I ?know what hazing is. Yes, I personally have been involved on both ends of incidents. It's a ritual that should be within the lines of good-natured fun and all the participants should have that understanding.

This 'viral' video of Jason Pierre-Paul dumping Prince Amukamara into a tub of ice water taken and posted on the web by Steve Weatherford was sent to us a couple of days ago, but we never posted it. Mainly because I didn't feel it was important. I've been around locker rooms almost all my life.

This incident didn't seem like anything outside the lines to me...at first. Then I watched it again. I didn't like the nature of it. It seemed a bit too mean-spitrited to me. Prince's reaction and the language used by JPP afterward completely seals that. The others in the video are taking it all in stride. Some are egging on JPP while others are telling Prince to "stand up for yourself".

The secondary struggled throughout most of the regular season, ranking 29th in pass yards per game allowed with 225.1. Luckily, Eli Manning made a habit of putting up those same numbers?often better?against opposing pass defenses.

Giants' CB Prince Amukamara, who missed more than half his rookie season with a broken metatarsal bone in his left foot, has undergone a procedure to help aid in the healing process.

If you recall, Bradshaw had an injection-type procedure this past season and was able to return for the Giants' Super Bowl run. Whether the procedure Prince had done was the exact one Bradhsaw had is unclear at this time...

Giants' CB Aaron Ross left yesterday's game with a concussion after colliding with DE Jason Pierre-Paul. He was replaced by first-round draft pick Prince Amukamara. Most teams would go right after the new guy, but the Falcons were having some issues moving the ball forward on the Giants defense and failed to exploit any mismatch.

The Giants' veteran DBs immediately made Prince aware that Atlanta would likely be directing their passes his way.

In what has been a long time coming, all signs point to the Giants 2011 first-round draft choice Prince Amukamara finally suiting up on Sunday against the Eagles.

Amukamara practiced in full on Thursday and he seems eager to get on the field and start earning his keep.

?I was pretty limited the week before but this week I have been getting a lot of reps with the first team and with the scout team,? Amukamara said on Thursday. ?This week is looking more promising than last week.?

Tomorrow could be the debut of CB Prince Amukamara and the return of WR Ramses Barden.

Prince will make the trip to Foxborough with the team and Barden is expected to go as well after he is activated from PUP today. Whether they dress for the game remains to be seen.

With the Giants facing the ultimate challenge in the Patriots' offense, they will need someone with Prince's ability to help out. But is he ready?

Giant fans have been wondering what could possibly help stem the flow of ?the all-too-frequent big plays the defense has been surrendering. One player - a rookie who miraculously fell to them in the draft - could be the answer.

CB Prince Amukamara, who has missed the first six games of the season with a broken bone in his foot, is confident he will be able to slide right in to the Giants' secondary next week and solidify their back seven.

What will it take for the Giants' defense to return to playoff caliber? They can use a king or a prince or something to fall into their lap, for one.

In fact, that's happened already. In April, when CB Prince Amukamara dropped to them in the draft. The irony is, Amukamara dropped because teams were wary about his ability to play the run.

Unfortunately, that is ultimately what the Giants will be asking Prince to do....help stop the run.

Alex Raskin of CBS Sports reports that Prince Amukamara is "encouraged" with the progress of his foot rehab. He passes along information that Amukamara has been moved from a scooter to crutches, and that he has been running in a pool.

There is still no timetable for his return, but it's always good to hear that there have been no complications. At this point in Prince's recovery, no news is good news, and good news is better news.

So much for going into the season with a healthy roster. The Giants lost three players in the last 24 hours to season-ending injuries.

First, CBs Terrell Thomas and Brian Witherspoon went down with knee injuries and now second-round pick DT Marvin Austin has a torn pectoral muscle and will miss the entire season as well....This is getting out of hand....

There is little in the hopper to help the corners. The team will have to make a trade, it seems. On the DL Austin will be replaced by veteran Jimmy Kennedy, who was signed today.

Giants' rookie CB Prince Amukamara's usual smile and upbeat demeanor has turned to solitude today after learning that the broken bone in his foot may cause him to miss half the Giants' regular season.

"I have never broken a bone in my body and I have never had surgery before, so it?s definitely a little adversity I?m going to have to deal with," the Giants top pick told reporters today. " I still have high expectations with the Giants and high expectations for myself, so it?s just all about focusing on the things I can control and getting better in my rehab, and still staying in the playbook."

Where's the good news, you ask....sorry, not today....from Tom Canavan of the AP....

Reading some of the reactions to Prince Amukamara's unfortunate injury, it would seem as if many Giants fans believe the season is over before it started. While that is a knee-jerk overreaction, it's hard to sugarcoat this early misfortune.

The injury Amukamara sustained (fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his foot) is a common one among athletes, but it is not yet known how much time he will miss.?William Beatty suffered the same injury last year and missed seven weeks.?The injury requires surgery in which a screw will be inserted into his foot to optimize healing.

From what I've read, the best case scenario would see him on crutches for four to six weeks and have him back on the practice field after about seven to eight weeks. ?The worst case scenario would see his entire rookie season wiped out.

Now that the Giants have brought in Prince Amukamara (above), there is no more peering?towards the horizon for the cavalry to arrive. It's here. The only thing that needs to happen now is for Osi Umenyiora to get on the field.

The usual structure of Giants' camp has been usurped by the unprecedented comings and goings of players and the awkward conversion of TIMEX into a summer home. ?That's calmed down the past few days. It's time to settle in and get down to business.

There is only one story at TIMEX these days: What will become of DE Osi Umeyiora?

He feels disrespected and bitter and will not participate in practice until he receives a raise and a contract extension from the Giants. ?The Giants, conversely, have not even entertained the thought of reworking the 30-year-old former Pro Bowler's contract.

In addition, they told Osi's agent, Tony Agnone, to cease shopping his client around the league because they feel they will not receive fair market value in return. Rather than have an unhappy "camper" so to speak hanging around, GM Jerry Resse told Osi to go home and "clear his head".

You could not have imagined yesterday afternoon that the Giants would walk away from the draft table last night with one of the two top CB prospects.

For them to land Nebraska's Prince Amukamara, one of two things would have had to happen. ?They either would have to trade up - waaay up - or the rest of the NFL would have to have fallen asleep.
