Giants' WR Odell Beckham, Jr. has been named The Sporting News NFL Rookie of the Year. (Sporting News, Jan 23).

Beckham, the 12th overall selection n the 2014 NFL Draft out of LSU, comes from a family of athletes and attended Isadore Newman High School in New Orleans - the same high school that Eli and Peyton Manning attended.

?Peyton and Eli were back in town a couple years ago, and went up to Newman to work out," Archie Mannng told Sporting News. "They asked if they could put a couple of receivers out there to throw to. Odell was sophomore then, and Eli said at the time 'This is a pretty good looking little receiver.' I don?t think they knew he would be that good."

The Pro Bowl will be played this weekend in Hawaii despite rumblings that the game should be cancelled due to disinterest and the ridiculous rules put in place that take the physicality out of the game.

A new format has been installed where teams are chosen by Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders from the pool of players elected to the game.

The Giants are sending just one player to the game: S Antrel Rolle, who is an alternate filling in for Seattle's Earl Thomas.

The Pro Bowl has been a joke for years and this week the players vowed to ratchet up the intensity to win back fans and restore some legitimacy to the event.

he NFC did their part. The AFC, not so much. The Nationals took heed to Peyton Manning's comments that the game should be taken more seriously. ?They walloped the Americans, 62-35, behind their two Super Bowl MVP QBs (Drew Brees and Eli Manning), superstar RB Adrian Peterson and rookie QB sensation Russell Wilson.

"It was a little more high intensity than in years' past," said the Giants' Victor Cruz, as per NFL.com. "It really did feel like a real game out there. People were hitting. It wasn't touch football; guys were laying some licks. It had the energy of a real game. My body feels like it just went through a real game."

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said yesterday at the league meetings in Atlanta that the Pro Bowl was in jeopardy if being discontinued, a proposal that has been bandied about for years now.

The NFL has tried everything to salvage the event but the logical answer is to simply cancel the series. Football can only be played full-tilt in the eyes of America, and the Pro Bowl has become a farce in light of ultra-competitive nature of the NFL Playoffs these days.

"We did have a lengthy discussion about the Pro Bowl, not specifically about a site," Goodell said in his presser. "The discussion was about the quality of the Pro Bowl, including the commitments we have with our network partners; where we could play the game and about all of our discussions with the Players Association, how to make the game better. We?ve had numerous discussions over several months about what we can do to make the game more competitive. I?ve said it repeatedly, particularly since the last game that we have to improve the quality of that game.

Eli Manning and Jason Pierre-Paul were selected to represent the Giants at the Pro Bowl, while breakout star Victor Cruz and Chris Snee were picked as alternates.

Manning, who will be playing in his second pro bowl (assuming the Giants do not make it to the Super Bowl), is getting the recognition he deserves for his fantastic play this season. Lions and Cowboys fans can argue that Matt Stafford and Tony Romo are more deserving, and they certainly have a case. Both quarterbacks are having better seasons, statistically speaking, but Manning has carried his team with his clutch play, especially in the fourth quarter, a trait that has not gone unnoticed by his peers and fans alike.

Pierre-Paul and Cruz were not on the fan ballots, in JPP's case due to the team's strength at DE (Tuck, Osi), and in Cruz' case, due to his relative anonymity prior to his eye-popping first full season in the NFL. Both players' chances on making it to Hawaii's exhibition game relied on the players and coaches, who account for 2/3 of the voting.

Lots of talk about the Pro Bowl balloting and how Giants players are getting boned by NFL fans in the voting. Yeah, it's unfortunate, because some of the guys could use the notoriety. There aren't enough Kardashians to go around, so getting to the Pro Bowl is the only other way to get you some media exposure...

Other than that, who cares? The Pro Bowl is a waste of time. The game should never be played. The other sports can be played under modified rules, so their All-Star games make sense. But football can only be played at one speed. I say stop playing the game and just have a TV event like Bob Hope used to do with the All-Americans.

The Pro Bowl is back in Hawaii this year after last year's ill-fated experiment to play it in the Super Bowl host city the week before the Super Bowl.

The NFL's version of their All-Star game had been played in Honolulu from 1980-2009 and had become a tradition of sorts. Both fans and players were not pleased with the site change.

Last year's game, played in Miami the week before the Super Bowl, was sparsely attended. The league will continue to hold the game the Sunday in-between the conference championships and the Super Bowl as opposed to the week after the Super Bowl.

With the season roughly half over (frownie face) I have decided to assemble the NFC's first half pro bowlers. This list is based on the players who are, in my opinion, having the most impressive seasons, taking into account their statistical numbers, their personal situations and my own gut. Enjoy!

Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay)
Seven games: 1,989 yards, 14 touchdowns, 2 interceptions
His numbers are very similar to Drew Brees. He has two less touchdowns, but four less interceptions and a better QB rating. Add to that the fact that he's playing behind a swiss cheese offensive line and you can see why he gets the nod over two worthy quarterbacks.

Wide Receiver:

Marques Colston (New Orleans)

Seven games: 36 receptions, 551 yards, 6 touchdowns

According to ESPN.com, the 2010 Pro Bowl will be played a week before the Super Bowl, instead of the Sunday after. It will be moved from Honolulu to Miami, the site of Super Bowl XLIV.

I like this. The downside is that players from the two Super Bowl teams will not get to attend, but so many players opt not to play anyway. The upside is that now football fans will have something to hold them over during that dreaded week off after the conference championships. It's still a meaningless game, but I feel that it will work better as an appetizer for the Super Bowl as opposed to an anticlimactic epilogue to the NFL season.

As Anthony reported earlier, six Giants have made the NFC pro bowl team, including 42 year old punter Jeff Feagles (last pro bowl appearance: 1995) and 44 year old kicker John Carney (last pro bowl appearance: 1994). However, after perusing the entire roster for both the NFC and AFC teams, I noticed that a number of deserving players were snubbed out of a trip to Hawaii. These players include, but are not limited to:

Philip Rivers (QB-SD)- Rivers is having the best season of any quarterback, there I said it. The former Giant's 101.4 QB rating leads the NFL, and no one else even has a rating of 99. Rivers and Drew Brees are tied for the NFL lead with 28 touchdowns, yet Rivers has thrown 5 less interceptions. He and fellow snub Tony Romo are tied for first with 8.23 yards per pass attempt. Brett Favre, who made it over Rivers, has almost as many interceptions as touchdowns and made it purely on his name recognition.

DeAngelo Williams (RB-CAR)- Leads the NFL with 5.5 yards per carry, .4 higher than Brandon Jacobs (who I believe should have made it if he stayed healthy all year). Williams also leads all RBs with 16 total touchdowns and probably leads the NFL in both broken tackles and in making Ronde Barber look foolish. Most impressively, he has not fumbled once all year.
