PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) Gus Edwards scored on a 74-yard run on Rutgers' second offensive play and Gio Rescigno threw a 35-yard touchdown pass in the second half as Rutgers beat Purdue 14-12 Saturday, posting consecutive Big Ten Conference wins for the first time since joining the league in 2014.

Rutgers (3-4, 2-2) forced two turnovers and limited Purdue (3-4, 1-3) to 4 of 19 on third- and fourth-down conversion attempts. The defense also came up with a defensive stop on the 2-point conversion after Anthony Mahoungou made a one-handed catch of a 10-yard touchdown pass by David Blough with 25 seconds to play to cut the lead to two points.

(AP) -- Purdue star forward Robbie Hummel will miss the upcoming season after injuring his right knee again.

The school said he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in practice Saturday. This is the same knee he hurt Feb. 24 against Minnesota that knocked him out for the rest of last season. He had surgery in March and had hoped to be ready for his senior season.

"This is obviously disappointing for Robbie, as well as our team, since he worked so hard to return from the tear he suffered in February," said Purdue head coach Matt Painter.
"As he begins his rehab and recovery, we'll persevere together and provide Robbie with all the support possible. I have no doubt he'll continue to play a pivotal role this season as a leader of our team."
Hummel is Purdue's most versatile player. Last season, he averaged 15.7 points and 6.9 rebounds a game. The Boilermakers were ranked No. 3 in the nation when he was hurt. They struggled at first without him before recovering to reach the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.

?There?s no other Blake Griffin,? Purdue guard Keaton Grant said. ?There?s only one of them in the United States, get 20 rebounds [per game]. So it?ll definitely be a great challenge playing against them and we look forward to it.?
