For the last twenty years, the NFL's conventional wisdom has said that to be a perennial contender a team needs to find a franchise quarterback to run the ever-increasing pass happy NFL. This season, while quarterbacks are still the apex predators of the NFL, watching teams like the Redskins, Packers, Bears, Rams, Texans and Eagles all wrestle with either performance or injury problems when it came to their franchise quarterbacks, there's something to be learned.

Eagles coach Chip Kelly is smart as a whip and is nothing if not unconventional. Nick Foles sure seems like a long-term option for the Eagles, but here is what Kelly said two days ago, to the Eagles official website (via SportsMole), about the quarterback position and his team.

Expected to participate: Eli Manning, David Carr, Ryan Nassib, Curtis Painter

Overview: The Giants' short and long term plans at QB revolve around the 32 year-old Manning, their two-time Super Bowl MVP stalwart who has started 145 consecutive games since becoming the starter in 2004. The objective is to keep Eli healthy and upright. If they can't, and Manning is finally knocked out of the lineup, the Giants have made some moves during the offseason to safeguard themselves.

The team is bringing back veteran David Carr for what could be his final season in Blue. Carr has served as Eli's primary backup four of the past five seasons (he played for the 49ers in 2010) and has not started an NFL game since 2007 when he was with Carolina.

We?ve been spoiled, Giants? fans.

Every weekend since Nov. 21, 2004, Eli Manning has suited up as the Giants? quarterback.

That?s a nine-year stretch and 135 consecutive regular season games, with an additional 11 playoff games. That streak is the longest among active quarterbacks and fourth longest overall behind Ronde Barber (215), London Fletcher (195) and Brandon Moore (137).

In the conversation of elite quarterbacks, we always hear the names Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.

Earlier this season, Eli Manning?s name was included in the bunch, and usually Drew Brees? name is scattered in there, but only after the others.

But Brees? name should always be included in the list of elite quarterbacks and probably higher on the list. It?s not his fault that the Saints have had a bad defense in almost every year of his tenure.

When the Giants traded up to get Eli Manning with the No. 1 overall pick in 2004, New York was abuzz that Peyton Manning?s younger brother would be taking snaps for Big Blue.

Even if Eli never shaped up to be as good as Peyton, he was still a Manning and has a bright future ahead of him.

Eli started his career backing up Kurt Warner, who led the Giants to a 5-4 record in 2004. However, the organization felt it was the right time for Manning to take over.

When the St. Louis Rams agreed to trade their No. 2 overall pick to the Washington Redskins prior to this spring?s NFL Draft, I cringed because I knew exactly what it meant.

The Indianapolis Colts were slated all along to draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the No. 1 pick, so the trade now signified that the Redskins would take Baylor quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.

That?s exactly how it played out, and Griffin III is off to a fast start in his NFL career.

This is the second half of my QB rankings. QBs 1-12 can be found here.

13. Matt Ryan- With Tony Gonzalez finally starting to show his age, I?m not sure Ryan will take the step forward some might expect of him.? He?ll be better though, and he has a bright future.? You could do worse.

14. Donovan McNabb- His receiving core is a definite step back from Philly?s explosive core.? He won?t be phased by the abundance of young receivers, but his days of being a #1 fantasy QB could be over.
