Via Arthur Staple, Brian Strait is day-to-day with an upper body injury and will miss tomorrow's game against Pittsburgh. That leaves the Islanders with six defenders, so Radek Martinek will make his season debut tomorrow night.

The Islanders have announced the signing of Radek Martinek to a one-year contract. Martinek had been skating with the team at practice this week on a temporary waiver. The deal is valued at $600,000.Hopefully the Islanders only see Martinek as an insurance policy against another defender getting hurt. He is still a serviceable defender but at 37-years old and a step behind, he shouldn't be a regular defender for the team. Martinek spent a lot of time in the press box as a healthy scratch last year, so I would imagine that he is going to be assuming a similar role throughout the rest of this season.?Lubomir Visnovsky is still out for at least another two games, and the big club is down to six defenders, so Martinek is number seven and an insurance policy in case something else happens. It does also allow them to bench other vets if they underperform such as Matt Carkner and Brian Strait (Matt Donovan, however, should be in the lineup). The team could dip into Bridgeport and grab Calvin de Haan but there's no reason to do so if de Haan would be sitting or rotating into the lineup. De Haan also isn't lighting up the AHL so far this year, with zero points in five games while running the point on Bridgeport's power play.Final thought: Maybe Griffin Reinhart got sent back a bit too soon.

According to the media at Iceworks today, Radek Martinek is informally skating with the Islanders. Training camp hasn't offically started, so many of the players are working out on their own to get ready for the season. It's possible that Martinek would get a training camp invite, especially given the Visnovsky situation.
