WR Ramses Barden (IR, knee) was released today by the Giants with an injury settlement.

https://twitter.com/ConorTOrr/status/377551368916959233

From RotoWorld: The 6-foot-6 former third-round pick's Giants career ends with 29 catches across 29 games. Nine of those catches came last Week 3. Barden's height could him earn some looks on the open market, but his career is on the downslope.

Update - 12:24 p.m.: Ramses Barden has re-signed with the Giants.

He has already joined the Giants on the field for practices.

?I?m happy to be back,? Barden said. ?This is where I wanted to be and now I?m here. I was out there listening to the calls, getting back into the rhythm of the cadence, enjoying the camaraderie and absorbing everything. I remember everything; I?ve had four years to soak it all up. I?m happy to be back on the field. I feel great. I expect the best.?

According to Mike Garafolo the Jets have had conversations with former Giants WR Ramses Barden, currently an unrestricted free agent.

From Rotoworld: The 6-foot-6 wideout's market has been nonexistent, but could pick up now that the draft has come and gone. Little more than a big target, the former third-round pick caught just 20 passes in four seasons with the Giants.

The Giants are following protocol when it comes to free agency.

The team has added placekicker Josh Brown, linebacker Dan Connor, defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins, safety Ryan Mundy, wide receiver Louis Murphy, tight end Brandon Myers and cornerback Aaron Ross.

In addition, tackle Will Beatty,?guard Keith Boothe,?quarterback David Carr, linebacker Keith Rivers and?defensive tackle Shaun Rodgers have all re-upped with the team.

The Giants would like to try and re-sign free agent wide receiver Ramses Barden, but first will allow the former third-round pick to test the open market.

In an interview with the New York Post, Barden's agent, Jeff Sperbeck, explained it will likely be a "wait and see" sort of approach for these two parties.

?We have spoken and they do have interest in re-signing him,?? Jeff Sperbeck, Barden?s agent, told The Post. ?We agreed that he?ll test the market and see how it unfolds.??
Barden, who started one game in four years as a member of the Giants, never amounted to the team's expectations. A 6-foot-6 target, the team drafted him with the vision of him developing into a big, Calvin Johnson-like target.

When healthy, Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz form a dynamic duo on the outside as targets for Eli Manning.

Yet that duo is in some jeopardy, with Nicks recovering from injury and Cruz?s contract status up in the air.

But all signs point to the Giants working out a deal with Cruz and Nicks being fully ready to go for the 2013 season.

Giants WR Ramses Barden, like many other Giants, will be testing the free agent market this spring.

"I would love to resign with the Giants," said Barden in a recent interview with Vibe Magazine. "I?ve made [NYC] a home, made friends here and media connections for my life after football. I know it?s a business, so at the end of the day, a business decision will be made. My agent and I just have to sit down with the Giants' management and hopefully both parties can find a way to keep me around. Free agency doesn?t open until March so I?ll have a better idea of where I?ll be playing then."

Barden, to be frank, has had an uneventful Giant career. He has 29 receptions in the 29 games he's been dressed for over the past four seasons. This year was his best (14 receptions, 220 yards) but almost all of his production came in the Week 3 game at Carolina (9 recs, 138 yards).

Many of the injured Giants missed practice Wednesday. Of course, it's still very early in the week and veterans don't?need to practice Wednesday in order to suit up on Sunday.

Here's who did not participate in practice:

Martellus Bennett?(knee),?Rocky Bernard?(quadriceps),?Chase Blackburn?(hip),?Andre Brown?(concussion), Hakeem Nicks?(foot, knee),?Kenny Phillips (knee),?Corey Webster?(hand, hamstring).

The Giants overcame some of their demons yesterday with a win over Cleveland. But despite Cleveland being a more competitive team in 2012, was the win enough to proclaim the G-Men are back on track?

The highlights include Eli Manning's three touchdown passes, despite the absence of top receiver Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden. Victor Cruz shined, and Reuben Randle and Domenik Hixon proved to be worthy replacements.

Ahmad Bradshaw enjoyed a career afternoon with a 200-yard effort. And filling in for the concussed Andre Brown, David Wilson scored his first NFL touchdown.

Ramses Barden, Hakeem Nicks, Rocky Bernard, Jayron Hosley and Kenny Phillips have all been ruled out of Sunday's game v. the Cleveland Browns.

None of the?aforementioned?five participated in Thursday's practice, so it's not a surprise they won't suit up on game day.

It's a crushing loss to the Giants' secondary, which is now without its starting safety and nickel cornerback. Stevie Brown and Tyler Sash are both candidates to fill in for Phillips.

There's not much hindering the Giants' offense so far this season.

Eli Manning has thrown for the second-highest yardage total in the league, only behind Drew Brees, and his touchdown total (7) is tied with the likes of Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers.

Overall, Big Blue owns the seventh-ranked offense in the league, averaging 411 yards and 28 points per game.

Hakeem Nicks will be missing his third straight game this Sunday as he continues to nurse his foot and knee injury. Ramses Barden has also been ruled out due to a concussion.

All of a sudden, an area that was the Giants strength will rely on contributions from a medley of different receivers.

Victor Cruz is a given. After a few timely drops Week 1, he?s bounced back to show that last season was no fluke. However, if the Browns or any other opposing defense focuses on limiting Cruz, Eli Manning will need his other targets to step up.

Barden's concussion is an even worse sign. He caught just two balls for 36 yards in Sunday's loss to Philadelphia, but had a career performance in Week 3 against Carolina.

There were a couple of calls on that series, however, that seemed questionable. In other words, it was more than just Lawrence Tynes? two misses that may have cost the Giants the comeback victory.

The drive opened up at the Giants? 35-yard line. Manning threw an incompletion intended for Victor Cruz. He followed up with a fumbled snap, then an incompletion to Ramses Barden.

When the Giants go to the draft table every year, they may not take the best players, but the ones they feel will help their football team. Whether it be right away or down the road a bit, they expect their high picks to produce at some point.

But did the Giants think it would take this long for 2009 draftees RB Andre Brown and WR Ramses Barden to begin contributing to the cause?

Giants WR Ramses Barden come to New York with high expectations after being taken in the third round of the 2009 draft. Injuries and the inability to get any traction on the offense or specials have made this camp a make-or-break one for Barden.

With time running out, the 6'6", 225 lb wideout needed to make his presence known in a game situation. Last night, Barden caught three passes including one for 22 yards and an 11-yard TD - his first ever as a Giant.

"I?ve been here for a few years and this is the healthiest I?ve been for a while and I want to show that good feeling isn?t going to waste," Barden said after the Giants' 20-17 loss to Chicago. "I want to be here for whatever my team needs me to do. Whether it is teams, whether it?s on offense, whether it?s green zone, I like to contribute in every way that I can and the more touchdowns I can get, the happier I?ll be."

The Giants have a hot competition going on right now in training camp for the final WR spot. They will most certainly keep Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz, Domenik Hixon, Jerrel Jernigan and rookie Rueben Randle and may only have room for one more wideout on the roster.

Both Tom Coughlin and Jerry Reese have said this could be the last chance for Ramses Barden. The competition for the spot is going to be hard to beat. UDFAs David Douglas and Brandon Collins have both made more plays thus far in camp. Isaiah Stanback and Dan DePalma are distinguishing themselves on special teams Barden has little wiggle room, folks...

Most position battles are relatively meaningless developments until late July, when training camps begin and players focus on preparing for the upcoming season. Coaches deliberating position competitions usually consider each players? entire body of work?career production, minicamp performance, injury history, work ethic, physical attributes, potential for growth?but the decision ultimately rests on a given players? level of preparedness heading into week 1. Whichever player best exhibits the qualities needed at his position to help his team win when the regular season begins should get the nod over his competitors. It?s pretty simple. These predicaments exist on most every NFL roster and they are for the most part altogether good problems to have. Multiple players fighting for a single spot leads to intense competition, the kind that brings out the best and most consistent effort in each competitor. Even defending Super Bowl champions need to resolve these sorts of issues, and the 2012 Giants are no exception.

In the seven years since the Giants traded their first-round pick to San Diego in the wow-that-worked-out-pretty-well Eli Manning deal, they've drafted a defensive player with their first pick every year except 2009, when they took Hakeem Nicks. None of those draft choices can be qualified as busts, as Corey Webster (2005), Mathias Kiwanuka (2006), Aaron Ross (2007), Kenny Phillips (2008), Nicks (2009), Jason Pierre-Paul (2010), and Prince Amukamara (2011) have all been contributors on at least one of Big Blue?s two 21st century SuperBowl title teams. (Note: Webster was technically a second round pick, but the Giants? first pick of the 2005 draft nonetheless.)

Although defense has been the norm in recent years, predicting what the Giants will do with this year?s first-round pick is no easy task. Jerry Reese tends to stray away from addressing immediate needs early on in the draft. He is a strict believer in the ?best player available philosophy?, preferring to stock talented players for the future--even if those players are not ready to make an impact right away.

While the Giants cull their roster for Mario Manningham's replacement, one has to wonder when Ramses Barden - selected by the Giants in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft - is going to mature into an NFL receiver.

His numbers are nothing special. In fact his numbers are practically nothing. In three seasons, Barden has only played in 17 games, amassing a measly 15 receptions for 174 yards and no touchdowns. He did not play in the season finale vs the Cowboys last year and did not dress at all in the postseason.

Also Check Out Grading The Units: Quarterbacks

Today we examine the wide receivers as well as the tight ends. The wide receiver unit is rich with potential, injury risk and X-factors.? The tight end core is, as the kids are saying, ?meh.?

The biggest complaint for the wide receivers is that there is no ?legit number one.?? The definition of a ?legit number one,? according to these people, is someone who blends both size and speed; someone who can stretch the field and double as a large red-zone target. My response to this argument is that if Hakeem Nicks is not a ?legit number one,? this is a very rare breed.? He may not be 6-5, but his playmaking ability is off the charts.? He is fast enough to stretch the field (he has caught a 30 yard pass in a larger perecentage of his games than did Plaxico Burress as a Giant), and he wreacked havoc in the red zone last year, grabbing 11 touchdowns in 13 games.? He may not be 6-5, but his playmaking ability is off the charts.? He just needs to stay healthy.

With free agency (hopefully) around the corner, the Giants will soon have to decide whether or not they want to pursue free agent Plaxico Burress.? A lot of factors will go into this decision, not the least of which is the current wide receiver core.? Let?s take a look:

Duke Calhoun, Michael Clayton, Derek Hagan, Jerrel Jernigan, Mario Manningham, Hakeem Nicks, Devin Thomas, Ramses Barden, Victor Cruz, Domenik Hixon, Steve Smith, Travis Beckum

Yes, I am aware that Travis Beckum was drafted as a tight end/H-back, but the Giants don?t use the H-back and he can?t cut it as a tight end.? At this point, his best shot to make the team is as a slot receiver.

Steve Smith?s absence was arguably the biggest injury blow to the Giants playoff hopes in 2010. However, it was the loss of another Giants receiver that could likely prove to be the most significant when all is said and done.

No, I am not talking about fan-favorite Victor Cruz. I am referring to Ramses Barden, who at 6?6 could become a major offensive weapon for the Giants, if he can stay on the field.

It was no secret why the Giants selected Barden out of Cal Poly in the 3rd round of the 2009 draft. Despite lacking the pedigree of a football powerhouse, Barden gave New York a chance to recreate the magic Eli Manning had worked with a slightly larger Plaxico Burress. With his rookie year being a wash, it appeared that Barden had finally arrived early this November when he filled the void left by Smith against Dallas.
