Alain Vigneault said that when he can roll four lines and get Jesper Fast and Oscar Lindberg out there regularly the line plays with "pretty good pace."

He said that Fast is "such a hard worker" and that Lindberg has been "playing better" lately.

He added, "they have been getting some offensive zone time and getting some looks. Sometimes the flow of the game, with special teams on either side, you lose that flow and they don't play as much as I would like to get them out there."

In 16 games in 2017, Fast has 1 goal, 2 assists and an average of 12:59 per game.

Alain Vigneault met with the media prior to tonight's game in Toronto and said (NYR):

  • On the Leafs, "their skill level, their speed, the way they challenge you 1 on 1. They are a good team. They play fast and make it real hard on the opposition. I watched their last games. They keep coming and I am looking forward to tonight."
  • On Vesey, "Jimmy is an easy guy to coach. He wants to learn, is driven, has a great work ethic. What I had heard about him prior to coming to NY is what I saw in training camp and what has followed up after. He is not afraid to go to the net or the tough areas and has a good skill set and he is getting better with every game."
  • On playing on the road, "we have been a good road team since I have been in NY, not quite sure what it was prior. I've mentioned this many times to our NY group that there isn't home way to play or road way, just the right way. We try to play the right way at home and on the road and fairly successful on the road and try to continue that tonight."

Babcock said that he has known Grabner "forever," dating back to his time in Spokane in the WHL, and said that the Leafs coaches and Lou Lamoriello wanted him back "big time" but the organization chose to play their kids instead.

He continued that Grabner had 100 breakaways last season and went 0 for 100. He then said that the last time the Rangers played the Leafs Grabner was 2 for 4 on breakaways and joked that the Leafs "should keep his breakaway count under 4 tonight.

4:29PM: On Brandon Pirri coming back in, Alain Vigneault said "he has done a good job for us. He has been out for a while but there is no doubt that his shot and his release on the PP was an effective weapon for us. I wanted to get that back in. Alain Vigneault spoke with reporters on Monday after practice and said (NYR):

  • On Derek Stepan, "I would say probable. Hurt his hip a little bit during the game so kept him off and he should skate tomorrow morning and I think right now he should be alright."
  • Same lineup then, "most likely, at this time that is what I am leaning towards."
  • On Buchnevich, "involved, assertive, competitive, I thought that allowed him to make some nice plays. It was a better game for him. Again, such a young player and anyone who watches the game, he has tremendous amount of skill and sees the ice well. He just needs to get more experience and get stronger and he will continue to make those plays and be more effective in one on ones."

Alain Vigneault met with the media following the Rangers win over Washington and said (Rangers Game Notes & NYR):

  • On today's game…"I thought it was a real competitive game. We came out real strong in the first. Our execution was good; we had some great opportunities. But they, like we expected, they had a real strong push in the second. It was a tight game that could've gone either way. We were able to make a real good play on the winning goal when (Chris Kreider) jumped through and made a nice pass to (Mats Zuccarello). Had great goaltending on both ends. It was a real hard-fought game."
  • On the disallowed goal, "it was offside, it was the right call. That is why that rule is there."
  • On the team's play after the first period…"That's a good defensive team and they've gotten great goaltending from both of their goalies. He made some big saves, but we were playing well. In the second, maybe the puck management wasn't as good as it was in the first and in the third it was just a hard-fought game."

Mats Zuccarello converted a Chris Kreider feed for the eventual game winner in the third period against the Capitals.

Zuccarello spoke after the game and said (NYR):

  • Was that a set play, "it was a fluke"
  • On the win, "it was a good team we were playing, two good teams out there. It felt like a playoff atmosphere and a division rivalry. It's nice to get the two points."
  • Did you like the third period, "I think we played a pretty solid game. Our defense and Hank was really good and we created a lot of chances. Both teams had their looks but in the end we deserved to win."
  • Was that a set play, "no, not really. If he loses it then I am just trying to get position but Kreids got it and he is quick and strong and it's a good play by him."

Throughout the season, Alain Vigneault has talked about different things that he would like to do or employ with the Rangers "in an ideal world."

In December, Vigneault was asked about the idea of giving Dan Girardi a rest as a precaution and said that it was one of those scenarios that would work "in an ideal world."

He said that the Metro is very tight and that "you need to play your best lineup and what you feel is your best lineup and that is what we are trying to do, we are trying to win games. "

On Saturday, Vigneault was again asked about the idea of resting Girardi and said that he is only looking at things one game at a time.

Prior to the Rangers loss to the Islanders on Thursday, Larry Brooks wondered if the Rangers were in need of acquiring a forward to play in their top-six for the stretch run and playoffs.

Brooks suggested Vancouver's Alex Burrows as a potential option because of his past with Alain Vigneault and his ability to be an agitator. (NY Post)

Burrows, 35, is in the final year of his contract and has a no-trade clause.

Alain Vigneault met with the media on Saturday after Rangers practice and said (NYR):

  • On the PP, "we had a long video session prior to practice today. It's definitely an area we are putting a lot of focus and attention on. You don't want the players to go out there and overthink, if you are thinking too much on the ice then you are playing slow and not moving the puck quick. Prior to practice, and we talked about and I really liked the work we did on the ice at practice. Puck movement was better and our attempts were better, retrieving the puck was better and I thought it was a good day."
  • "right now, points being so valuable and so important, all the games have been real tight, whether it be 5 on 5 or PP or PK, the plays that you have to make with puck become so important, taking care of the puck the right way, and that is on the PP also. Obviously, last game, that critical goal against that we gave up with five guys looking and not reacting. When they are in our zone, even if we are on the PP, we are defending and we need the five guys to defend. That is something we talked about this morning and I am confident we will respond better in the next game."

In the two seasons since the Islanders have moved their home games to Brooklyn, the Rangers are 0-3-1.

The Islanders have out-scored the Rangers 13 to 7 but the Rangers have out-shot the Islanders 134 to 123.

The Rangers have not scored more than 2 goals in a game in Brooklyn and Alain Vigneault said last night that the Rangers "seem to have issues" in Brooklyn and that right now there is nothing they can do about that.

Henrik Lundqvist said that the Rangers wanted to get a win in Brooklyn and noted that a win would have provided an "extra good feeling" but that losing the game is not a "big deal."

Following last night's game, Ryan McDonagh said that he felt that the Rangers didn't match the intensity that the Islanders brought. (MSG)

He said that the Rangers had the puck in the Islanders zone for a lot of the first period but that they controlled the puck more in the second and third and were "chasing a bit." (MSG)

Alain Vigneault said that the Rangers had a good first period but only recorded 5 shots on goal and didn't capitalize enough on the zone time they had.

He said that in the second the Rangers made two decisions with the puck "that were wrong and it ended up in the back of our net."
