Baizley said, "Jari Kurri and I went to salary arbitration with Glen Sather and the Oilers twice and we lost both times. The first time it was a very primitive and informal process. It was Glen and me with the arbitrator in a hotel room and I filed what I would call a lawyers brief and Glen had almost done it on napkins. To our astonishment, not only did we lose the arbitration, but Jari was awarded the exact salary that Glen had proposed."
He added, "A day later, Glen phoned me and said, 'I need to give you guys more money. We didn't go through the arbitration process in order to have an unhappy player.' I think the number Glen took to arbitration was not a serious number, and he figured the arbitrator would come down the middle with his award. Then, when Glen got his number, the fact he called back the next day was just a case of Glen being shrewd and recognizing that he couldn't have Jari Kurri unhappy."
