Alain Vigneault met with the media in Calgary after practice today (NYR):
On the line switches, "I felt that the last couple of games we have been a little bit off at both ends of the rink. Not the same execution and crispness to our game to get back and check and break out and counter attack. I think everyone knows the chemistry that Chris has had with Derek in the past and they have played long stretches also with Rick on the right side. It's a unit that has some chemistry and they know one another and there is no doubt in my mind that Pavel and Mika have nice chemistry. Zuccy is one of our best players, skill wise, compete wise, he fits in with everyone and just plays. It was time to tinker a bit and we put Jimmy with a guy that he knows real well in Hayes and Hayes and JT have good chemistry there."
On Vesey, "as far as I can tell he has dealt with it like a pro. No one likes to miss a couple of shifts but we are at game 14 now and I have been pretty consistent at rolling four lines which is something that this year you need to do. It's only happened a couple of times. I don't see it as an issue, he has reacted the way that I would expect any player to react, whether it be him or Chris. They come to the rink, work real hard and get ready for the next game."
On Skjei on the right side, "he played there last year in Hartford. That is one of the things toward the end of the year that we had them do. In the last 5-6 games I have liked how he has played, how he is skating with the puck and, we will find out, I am hoping that him and Marc Staal will be a good combo. A veteran stay at home type with a young player who can skate and move the puck."
Does it feel like a big road trip, "yes. We have four games, there is no doubt that we have played well at home and we are nearing the 20 game mark and that is where a lot of teams make their true assessment at home and on the road for how their guys have played. I think that as a staff and as a management staff, and our players, these are good teams we are playing against and good matchup and it's going to be a real good test. I am looking forward to it, I know the group is looking forward to it and we will be ready tomorrow."
On Kreider and Nash being on the same PP, "I like how Rick is handling the puck, there is no doubt that of all of our guys that Kreids is our best net front, when he is there you can barely move him and it's tough for the goalie to see around him. Jimmy, he goes to those tough areas and I felt he was good to try. I like how Rick is handling the puck and it permits me to keep the same lines and add a forward piece and that is what we are going to do."
On Vesey on the PP, "he will play some net front and besides the net where we can get some different looks. He is a pretty good passer down low, something that both Chris Drury and the scouts who saw him play told us. We will have a different look and any time you can throw different looks at the other teams and keep them guessing is a positive."
