Boo Nieves has played twice in the preseason for the Rangers so far:
- NYI: 1 assist, 13:37 per game, 1 shot attempt blocked, 2 faceoff wins, 5 faceoff losses (10:07 at even strength, 3:30 on PK)
- NJ: 15:25, 1 shot, 1 shot blocked, 3 shots that missed the net, 1 hit, 2 takeaways, 3 and 10 on faceoffs (10:18 at even strength, 11 seconds on PP and 4:56 on PK)
Alain Vigneault said that Nieves is in the mix for a spot and that he is "big, strong" and a good skater.
He said that the team is looking to fill a role with someone who, in addition to other traits, can kill penalties.
Nieves said that being sent back to Hartford wouldn't be the "end of the world" and that while it would be "tough" it would motivate him to work even harder. (NY Post)
Dave Maloney has mentioned during the preseason that Nieves dealt with a concussion at some point last season.
Adam Rotter: Nieves is in the mix for that spot on the fourth line and seeing a lot of time on the PK is definitely something that helps his cause. What hurts his cause is that he can also be sent to Hartford without going on waivers and it's possible that he starts there while the Rangers give it a go for a few games with Lias Andersson. Andersson can also be sent to Hartford but I think that if the two players are tied, the tie will go to Andersson to start.
