He says that while Messier wanted the Rangers job last year and was passed over, "you'd have to think" that he would still like to coach (Ottawa Sun)
Messier has been working as a consultant for the Oilers all season after leaving the Rangers.
Adam Rotter: Hiring Messier to coach the Oilers would once again be a signal that they are starting over. The Oilers hired Dallas Eakins, a coach with a great success as an assistant and in the AHL but with no NHL head coaching experience to take them up a level. So far it hasn't worked out and while Messier is an Oilers legend and friends with the bosses (Kevin Lowe and Craig MacTavish) that same situation didn't help him land the Rangers job last year. The Oilers need someone who can teach structure and Eakins was a good choice to try that. Adding Messier back to the Oilers would only continue the narrative that the organization is still in the past.
