Darren Dreger said "Franson has tremendous trade value if you can believe it because he is a right shot defenseman and the market is always looking for that. I know that the New York Rangers would love to have Cody Franson. Dave Nonis could make a Del Zotto for Franson trade tomorrow if he wanted to but the Maple Leafs also covet that right shot. Does he need to be better, he does if he wants the money he was chasing in his last negotiation." (TSN Drive)
3:31PM: Glen Sather is continuing to shop Michael Del Zotto and the Toronto Maple Leafs are among the teams who have some level of interest (Dreger Report).
The return the Rangers are asking for, a young defenseman, may be too much for the Maple Leafs but with the Rangers searching for a right hand shot defenseman, Cody Franson could be a target (Dreger Report).
The Ottawa Senators still have some interest in Del Zotto but rookie Cody Ceci has lessened their need to acquire a puck moving defenseman (Pierre LeBrun and Dreger Report).
Franson has one goal and 15 assists this season for the Maple Leafs and is averaging 21:13 per game.
13 of his 16 points have come on the PP and he ranks fourth in the NHL in hits with 119.
Franson is 6-5 and is an RFA after the season after signing a one-year deal worth $2 million following a holdout in training camp.
According to Extra Skater, Franson starts 41.7% of his even strength shifts in the defensive zone, 32.3% in the neutral zone and 26.1% in the offensive zone.
The Maple Leafs only control 43.5% of the shot attempts when Franson is on the ice.
