Did you know that John Tortorella made it clear he didn’t want Mark Messier anywhere near the dressing room of the New York Rangers in the second half of the NHL season? Doesn’t sound like Messier is about to replace the should-be-replaced Glen Sather any day now...Huh?
If there is some issue between Messier and Tortorella why did it take a guy from Toronto to tell us this months after the season ended. Larry Brooks has nothing on this?
A rift between the two would probably have no affect on Messier taking over as GM. Does Simmons remember the epic rift between Neil Smith and Mike Keenan that was part of the Rangers Stanley Cup run. Beyond that, Messier still isn't ready to become GM and probably needs at least this season and maybe next before its time to give the position to him. Steve Yzerman was with the Red Wings four years before he took the job in Tampa Bay and three years after he was GM of the Canadian World Championship team. Messier's time isn't for a little while, and it would be my guess that Messier's time will probably coincide with John Tortorella not being the coach unless the team has become incredibly successful under his coaching.
All of these reports about Messier taking over the job soon come out of Canada and not New York. When rumors of it becoming close lead Larry Brooks Sunday column, or are from a New York paper or media outlet, that is when they can start being taken seriously.
