Larry Brooks tweets that the Rangers are close to bringing back Steve Eminger.

Brooks says that the deal should be done soon.

Eminger, 27, had a cap hit of $1.125 million last season. He had two goals and four assists in 65 games.

He had 143 hits last season and 103 blocked shots in 15:51 per game. He averaged 18 minutes a game in 16 November games.

This is a good move as it gives John Tortorella a player that he knows and can be comfortable with as a 6th/7th defenseman. Emmy had some really good moments for the Rangers last season and then some really bad moments. He is a solid guy to play on the third pair and will probably be relatively inexpensive.

He was acquired last July from Anaheim for Aaron Voros. The Rangers have had interest in Eminger since before he was acquired.

In November, Eminger was called "the fifth defenseman" by John Tortorella. Tortorella called him a "warrior" last season.

Tortorella said before free agency that Eminger could return because the Rangers know what kind of player he is.
