Hagelin is an RFA this summer.
Etem was the 29th pick in the 2010 draft for the Ducks and has 15 goals and 16 assists in 112 NHL Games. He is an RFA this summer.
Etem had 13 goals and 8 assists in 22 games in the AHL last season.
EJ Hradek said of the deal, "For Ranger fans they are wondering why Hagelin because he has been a very helpful piece who helps in a lot of areas. He is looking at a contract of more than $3 million. Etem brings size, not as fast but still some speed. He won't command as much money. That is why the swap. One of those ones where Ranger fans are shaking their heads. It was a business decision."
Dave Reid said that Ranger fans will love Etem.
Adam Rotter: Well, this is both surprising and not surprising. Hagelin is the the kind of guy that you can't overpay with a new contract and the Rangers are avoiding that and acquiring a big, fast scorer in Etem.
It's shocking because of how much Hagelin means to the Rangers but in this cap world you need to make tough choices. The Rangers lose a lot of energy, penalty killing ability, character and some scoring and as much as I love Hagelin, all of that stuff isn't worth close to $4 million which is what I think he will get on his new contract.
I remember liking Etem a lot in the 2010 draft
