10:08AM: The Rangers have announced the move and described his new role as "In his expanded role, Drury, 40, will assist Gorton on all player transactions and contract negotiations, and he will continue to assist in overseeing and evaluating all players at the collegiate level. Drury, who rejoined the Rangers organization as Director of Player Development on September 4, 2015, will continue to assist in the development of Rangers prospects, both on and off the ice, and serve as a liaison between the hockey operations department and prospects in the organization."
8:55AM: Chris Drury will be promoted to assistant GM today according to Joe McDonald of ESPN.
Drury joined the Rangers organization last summer as Director of Player Development and helped the Rangers land Jimmy Vesey.
Drury will join Jim Schoenfeld as assistant GM and give the Rangers two assistant GMs which is what they had when Glen Sather was GM.
From the Rangers media guide for this past season, Drury's role was described as "he is responsible for working with the team's hockey operations department to assist in the development of Rangers prospects, both on and off the ice ... Serves as a liaison between the hockey operations department and prospects in the organization, and assists in the evaluation of the team's prospects."
McDonald said that the process of moving Drury into this role started before the Rangers signed Vesey.
Adam Rotter: I think that Drury is a tremendous asset for the Rangers to have in their front office and this is a nice promotion for someone who only re-joined the organization about a year ago. Most importantly though Drury will continue his work in prospect development where he can be a resource for all of the young players in the organization.
