Richards had teams visit him at the Newport Sports Office outside of Toronto and said that he ultimately made his decision between the Rangers and the Kings. (Bardown)

He said that the Rangers showed a similar kind of video that featured actors, former players, guys who won in 1994 and the parade down the Canyon of Heroes. (Bardown)
Richards noted that the Kings won two Stanley Cups since he chose to sign with the Rangers but that he is happy he chose NY and that after playing for two teams in the south, he wanted to play for an Original Six franchise. (Bardown)
Richards signed a nine-year contract with the Rangers worth $60 million but only ended up playing three-years for the Rangers.
The Rangers used a compliance buyout to move on from Richards following the 2014 Stanley Cup.
Had Richards remained with the Rangers, he would be in the 8th year of his 9-year contract.
Richards retired in 2016 after winning the Stanley Cup in 2015 with Chicago and playing his final-year with the Red Wings.
