Since joining Tampa Bay, JT Miller has 2 goals and 3 assists in four games.
- With the Rangers he had 13 goals and 28 assists in 63 games
Tampa coach Jon Cooper said that Miller has been "everything" the Lightning have needed up front and provides the "heavy body" that the team lacked.
Cooper said that Miller has a lot of the attributes that you need to play in the playoffs and that while they need to get him up to speed with their system, "he was a really good add for us." (NY Post)
Adam Rotter: The Rangers took a big risk in trading a 24-year old former first round pick but they did so in the hope that some combination of Libor Hajek, Brett Howden, Vlad Namestnikov and, at least one first round pick, will help the Rangers get to a place where Tampa is right now. Miller has the chance to flourish in Tampa where he can play down in the lineup and not deal with the same kind of pressure he had with the Rangers.
There was a time last season when Miller looked like he was going to be as big a part of the Rangers future as anyone but he wasn't able to solidify the spot in the top-six that the Rangers needed him to. Ultimately the Rangers decided that they weren't going to give Miller the same kind of deal they gave Chris Kreider and to get what they wanted from Tampa Bay, they had to include him. It could very well backfire on the Rangers and Miller could turn into a multi-time All-Star, and help Tampa win multiple Cups, but the organization is betting that the return they got will help them in the long-term more than Miller would have.
