Against Columbus tonight, the Rangers are expected to go with a defense group that includes:
- Ryan McDonagh paired with Nick Holden
- Marc Staal paired with Kevin Shattenkirk
- Brady Skjei paired with Brendan Smith
Vigneault said that the Rangers defense is a work in progress as they try and find some duos that have chemistry.
He said that Smith and Skjei had good chemistry last season and that the Rangers want Ryan McDonagh playing on the left side.
Vigneault said that McDonagh can play both sides but that playing on the left side allows him to jump up into the play more, adding "he is so much more comfortable and better on the left side than right side."
He said that Kevin Shattenkirk is getting adjusted to being with the Rangers and that he is "on the verge, 5 on 5, of understanding what we are looking for and being a real effective player for us.
