On Monday, Alain Vigneault was asked about the Rangers defense and if it will be tough to get Keith Yandle extra ice time when Ryan McDonagh is back.
Vigneault said that when McDonagh is playing like he did before he got hurt then "you gotta give him those 23 to 26 minutes a game."
He said that things depend on how guys are playing, situations on the ice and what kind of team the Rangers are playing against.
Vigneault said that Yandle will be used more when the Rangers are behind or when faceoffs are in the offensive zone.
He said that Staal will be used more against teams that have two scoring lines and added, "every game is different and brings out different situations."
McDonagh leads the Rangers in ice time per game with 22:29, Staal is averaging 19:54 and Yandle is averaging 19:52.
Yandle has averaged 23:41 since McDonagh was first injured but averaged 19:11 in the 51 games prior. (HR)
