5:43PM: After naming Zuccarello as an alternate captain, Alain Vigneault said "I expect him to continue to influence and lead like he has been developing and growing since I have been here, his first year he was trying to establish himself as an NHLer. He has done that and earned the respect of everyone in the NHL not just by how he plays but he came back from a real serious injury and in our dressing room he is a very popular figure and always comes to play and is there for his teammates and I expect him to continue to do that and help our whole group and Ryan McDonagh the best way that he can."
2:59PM: Zuccarello said that it was a proud moment to be named alternate captain, adding that it was not something he thought could happen when he first came over to play in the NHL. (Nettavisen)
2:15PM: The Rangers have announced that Mats Zuccarello has been named an alternate captain for this season.
Zuccarello has played in 383 games as a Ranger, scoring 86 goals and 176 assists.
He has led the Rangers in points in three of the past four seasons.
Adam Rotter: He was the best and logical choice to take on Derek Stepan's "A." He's a core player, been with the team for a while, leads by example and produces consistently. Zucc is one of the Rangers hardest workers, a fearless player for his size and being one of the most popular players certainly doesn't hurt. Zuccarello, like Dan Girardi, was the kind of player that didn't need a letter to be a leader, but like Girardi got, now has a very much deserved one.
