Brad Richards has chosen to sign with the Rangers according to Darren Dreger.
The deal is for nine years at $60 million. He will have a cap hit of $6.7 million per season.
Nick Kypreos says that the deal is very front loaded with Richards getting $50 million in the first five years. Kypreos also says that Richards left more money on the table to come to the Rangers.
The Calgary Flames offered Richards nine years and $64 million.
There is your number one center. The cap hit is fine, but it is for a long time. Still, the Rangers have their number one center to play with Marian Gaborik. I wouldn't get too caught up in the nine years. If the money is all front loaded than Richards could retire or get bought out of the last few years.
The thing is, you can't have it both ways. If you want Richards, which they did, they had to give him nine years. If they didn't give him nine years, he wouldn't be a Ranger.
