10/2/17 | Holden continued to skate with Steven Kampfer at practice in Lake Placid while Tony DeAngelo continued to skate with Marc Staal. (NY Post)
Vigneault said that Holden was "down and out" with his illness and that today was his first time back with the team.
Holden skated today with Steve Kampfer on what appeared to be an extra D pair and Vigneault said that they will ease him back into things and then make decisions on who will play and what the pairs will be.
The other pairs at practice today were Ryan McDonagh & Kevin Shattenkirk, Brady Skjei & Brendan Smith, Marc Staal and Tony DeAngelo.
Larry Brooks wrote that Holden's situation with the Rangers still needs to be worked out as "his trade value becomes more apparent as the first month evolves." (NY Post)
Adam Rotter: Holden being sick and missing the last few days explains part of the reason why Marc Staal was with Tony DeAngelo today, the other part being that DeAngelo played pretty well in the preason and likely deserves a shot to start the season in the lineup. My guess is that Holden and DeAngelo will rotate for a few games so that the Rangers can get a look at both before settling on a more permanent 6th defenseman. If DeAngelo wins out then Holden could be moved but if DeAngelo still needs some time, Holden will likely stick in the lineup. With the Rangers up against the cap it doesn't make a ton of sense for them to carry Holden ($1.65 million) as a 7th defensemen even though that would probably be a nice role for him.
